Losing commits because Sumlin was here and sucked and now losing commits because he's not here.

Was bound to happen. Losing recruits because Sumlin sucked was worse.

Good move by them. Wait and see who we hire, what their system will be, and what other offers they may get. Very smart.

Re: 2021 Recruit/Commitment Thread
Depressed seeing our players entering the transfer portal, but fuck it. So excited to see James Bohls is officially a Wildcat!
My daughter knows him, a absolute stud! A lot a fight in this kid, been putting kids to sleep in backyards & garages (supervised MMA) throughout San Clemente for the past few years. Reminds me of Donnie Salum, another brawler that left everything on the field.
This kid at linebacker, He’ll yeah!

I seem to remember Scheer saying his family had no real Arizona ties and he was always going out of state.

That sucks. Granted if we knew how to run a good football program even a guy with no Arizona ties might just have to take a long hard look.

Re: 2021 Recruit/Commitment Thread
I would say he's much more explosive. Carey was a consistent, tough runner, but Robinson makes plays that you need to be a special athlete to make. Look at this play vs WVU.

That's high level balance, agility, acceleration and strength all in one package.

Fisch's first transfer portal offer.
Re: 2021 Recruit/Commitment Thread
Well would be nice to bring both ( Anderson and Harris) AZ kids home. Might send a good message

https://247sports.com/Article/Drake-And ... 157915931/
One prominent player in Northwestern's offense may be leaving the program. Sources tell 247Sports that Wildcats running back Drake Anderson has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal.
In the 2020 season, Anderson led all Northwestern players with 256 rushing yards on 62 carries. He also found the end zone twice on the ground while catching four passes for 28 yards. In his three seasons with the program, Anderson has racked up 926 rushing yards, 56 receiving yards, and five touchdowns.
Although Anderson has entered his name into the portal, that doesn't necessarily mean he will be leaving Northwestern. He does have the option of pulling his name out of the portal and returning to the program.
Anderson was a three-star recruit and the No. 91 player at his position in the 2018 signing class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Outside of Northwestern, Anderson also fielded scholarship offers from programs like Illinois, Nevada, and New Mexico State.

Seniors
So my understanding is that everybody gets a mulligan for 2020...meaning that if you're a senior in terms of eligibility this school year, you can still return and play next year as a grad student, or whatever. For us, we've got potentially 8 on our two-deep offense and 8 on our two-deep defense (that's counting returning injured players and those who opted out.) You can make a case to let them go and move on, as we're not exactly talking anybody's All America Team here. But, the concern is that we're short-handed and could use physically mature bodies for one more season. If we keep a good chunk of the seniors, with the 16 signed recruits (and maybe a couple more who've initially wavered), and hopefully some aggressive work with the transfer portal, we still might not be very good, but at least we wouldn't be alarmingly short-handed in terms of bodies to play football. So, do we have any idea when decisions will be made by seniors? Is this a onesie-twosie thing where somebody just chooses to tweet out "I'll be returning" when and if they feel like it, or is there some deadline for all parties to decide?

Re: 2021 Recruit/Commitment Thread
Hopefully Drake doesn't fumble a lot. Found this on one of Northwestern's message boards, https://northwestern.forums.rivals.com/ ... son.55247/
Overall, I liked Drake, but I think he never developed in two critical areas:
1. learning when to stop going "east-west" and settle for a few positive yards "north-south." My observation was the Drake was overly enamored with the cut back to try to get the "home run play" rather than patiently waiting for the hole. His career long was a 41yd TD against Nebraska this year - I don't think it's a coincidence that he hit the hole that the play was designed to open up (a designed counter to the right), as opposed to him dancing around in the backfield, reversing field, then getting tackled for a loss, which I felt happened far too often.
2. ball security
I was curious as to what his actual fumble rate was during his NU career: 5 fumbles over 238 total touches (rushes + receptions), meaning he fumbled once every 47.6 touches.
I wasn't able to find any college stats, but as a comparison, in 2019, the fumble rate in the NFL for RBs was 1 in every 114.9 touches. So, I think it's safe to say that Drake's fumble rate was much higher than it should have been and probably led to him being benched by the coaching staff.
I wish him the best wherever his career takes him.

Just for comparison purposes, checked Brightwell's stats this season after the ASU debacle. 83 rushes, 13 catches, 5 fumbles, 3 lost all v. ASU.

Any shot we get Tre Walker from San Jose St? Seems he might be following Cummings here. Would be a boost to our receiving corps.

Re-Committing "Super Seniors"
As per usual, Michael Lev with a great job on this. So about half of the seniors who have an opportunity to return for another season have chosen to do so.
Offense:
C Josh McCauley
TE Bryce Wolma
WR Thomas Reid
You'd like to keep all of them, but of the remaining group, I'd most want WR/KR Tayvian Cunningham and OG Josh Donovan. It would also be nice to see if incoming FR QB Clay Millen can be persuaded to honor his verbal. Regardless, I'd hope they hit the transfer portal hard for another QB, as well as anybody else who can help the team.
Defense:
DE Trevon Mason
DE Aaron Blackwell
DE J.B. Brown
DE Jalen Cochran
You'll notice a trend there. I'd also like LB Anthony Pandy and S Jarrius Wallace. It's possible that NTs Roy Lopez and Myles Tapusoa are taking a wait-and-see approach regarding the new defensive scheme, expected to be a blitz-happy 4-3.

Looks like Fisch has done more than Sumlin has done all year. Hope the people who hated this hire will give him a chance. I think he will recruit better. You can see he is excited and will bring energy.

Don't get me excited for next season. But pretty happy so far with the results.
Re: 2021 Recruit/Commitment Thread
I'm just spitballing here and seeking others opinions on something. Did anyone notice that after Sumlin and staff were fired, most of the defectors were from the offensive side of the ball. Defectors from the defense seem to happen before the firing. Only one defector since the offensive staff was hired and he's opting for the NFL. I'm not saying this is what happened but its a hmmmm. This wouldn't be the first time fired outgoing coaches sabotaged the incoming coach by discouraging players and encouraging them to leave. I hope that's not what happened but some of this sure looks like it.

I think it's more just people who are gonna leave because Sumlin got fired aren't going to wait around to see who we hire.tgrumpy2 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 7:06 pm I'm just spitballing here and seeking others opinions on something. This year, you get to pick your coach and program and be eligible immediately. If Sumlin's firing was enough for you, this is not the year to hold back.
Our offensive staff is at least solid with some upside and Fisch is an offensive coach. If you're an offensive player, no reason to either not leave right away or give it a whirl.
If people leave from here, it will be after practice in the spring/summer. That's when coaching and PT issues pop up.
Re: 2021 Recruit/Commitment Thread
I personally think a lot of them were thinking of transferring before Sumlin was fired as not a lot of people want to be on a team thats on an 0-12 streak. Plus, this is a great year to transfer with the lifted restrictions. I'll also note that none of the transfers have gone to other Power 5 schools at the moment.tgrumpy2 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 7:06 pm I'm just spitballing here and seeking others opinions on something. Re: 2021 Recruit/Commitment Thread
Probably related to the fact that most of the guys we lost when Pac12 cancelled the fall season were on the defensive side of the ball.tgrumpy2 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 7:06 pm I'm just spitballing here and seeking others opinions on something. By no means am I an insider but could it possibly be McCaffrey from Michigan?? I know that Fisch has was main recruiter there

A "program changer" though? He was never a starter on a somewhat offensively challenged Michigan team. According to Chief, it's Jack Richardson, but it's Chief so who knows just how accurate it truly is. I also saw chief feuding with our linebacker Rourke Freeburg cuz Freeburg was praising our special teams coach under Sumlin (and current possibly), Spring. Called him ignorant and pretty much called him stupid. I can't with that guy. Dude is something else

Chief is a Dick, but he is right. Our Special Teams were terrible under Sumlin. Truthfully our Special Teams haven't been "special" for a while. I actually would not bring back Springer for anything but recruiting.BeardownZonaZona wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 10:57 pm According to Chief, it's Jack Richardson, but it's Chief so who knows just how accurate it truly is. I do think Hilinski would be an upgrade for sure, but he still doesn't scream program changer to me. I know he has been through a lot but he did get beat out for the starting job. Maybe my program changer definition is just too high. Hopefully, new scenery will be good for him and he will be able to live up to his rated potential coming out of HS.Chicat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 10:40 pmRyan Hilinski could turn some things around for us.DrWildcat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 10:36 pmA "program changer" though?
