Re: The Weather is Crazy
My neighborhood looks like a warzone. Trees down, debris is covering the street.
That was a crazy strong storm last night. Rain was coming in sideways.

Just the tip of the iceberg. The crazy spike in disasters we've seen in the last 2 or 3 years will be nothing compared to the next 20

It always blows my mind how one part of Tucson can get hammered with rain while another area is almost completely dry.

Re: The Weather is Crazy
The uprooted trees in midtown are insane.
We lost most of a small tree. I got water in my kitchen from the oven vent. That water had to come in completely sideways to avoid the cap.

Re: The Weather is Crazy
I just had a lot of lightning and some medium rain for about 10 mins last night. Nothing crazy. My part of town has seen the least amount of rain so far it seems like.
Re: The Weather is Crazy
One of the trees in my complex fell over and is blocking the walkway out to my car so I had to kinda climb around it this morning. Couple downed trees on Craycroft and on Wilmot I saw.
i was going to put the ua/asu records here...but i forgot what they were.

Re: The Weather is Crazy
The rain gauges between Alvernon, Swan, Speedway and Broadway yesterday recorded 1-1.5 inches of rain, probably all in that 45 minutes last night.

Re: The Weather is Crazy
It was hailing along with water coming down in sheets at the same time, which I don't see as possible. There was so much water blasting in all directions, I'm not sure there was air enough for a person to breathe.

I've seen it rain on neighbors house across the street while I stay dry.gronk4heisman wrote: ↑Wed Jul 21, 2021 9:22 am It always blows my mind how one part of Tucson can get hammered with rain while another area is almost completely dry.
Re: The Weather is Crazy
I was watching the Suns game at Trident when DTV lost service. Started getting alerts about multiple down power lines on Craycroft. I could have kayaked down my street near Swan it was so deep.

Twice in my life, once in a monsoon storm in Tucson and once in New Orleans, I was caught outside in a deluge so brutally thick with water that the only way I could breath was by looking straight down at the ground and breathing in the air pocket my head made.Longhorned wrote: ↑Wed Jul 21, 2021 10:37 am It was hailing along with water coming down in sheets at the same time, which I don't see as possible. Re: The Weather is Crazy
We were at BJ’s on Craycroft watching the game. Saw the same stuff most of you did (hail, sheets of rain, lightening…). The wind was so bad, it was driving the rain in under the doors. I honestly thought the stop light pole was going to bend over or at least the Craycroft street sign fall off. The weirdest thing was, the rain was warm while it was hailing. There must have been some crazy winds and temperature inversions aloft. Meanwhile, a mile away on 22nd, nada.

Re: The Weather is Crazy
Does any of that water replenish the aquifer or does it just run along the surface until it gets to Mexico?

Re: The Weather is Crazy
I've read there's some concern that all this rain in a short period won't actually help the drought a ton. Mostly because of runoff (especially in the numerous burn scar areas) not being able to deeply penetrate soil.

Re: The Weather is Crazy
I'm unsure the answer to your specific question, Chi, but based on this updated report, I'd extrapolate that these events are drying out the aquifer slightly. Apparently this impression of abundant rain in Tucson is mostly in our imaginations.

Re: The Weather is Crazy
Finally it hit the foothills as well, based on my unscientific measurement (a vase outside) we got around 3 inches.

Re: The Weather is Crazy
That report was before a good chunk of the city got two inches last night alone along with the big storm last Sunday. The closest recording near me is showing we are at 5.23 inches for the month already, well above the 2 inch average.Longhorned wrote: ↑Fri Jul 23, 2021 7:12 am I'm unsure the answer to your specific question, Chi, but based on this updated report, I'd extrapolate that these events are drying out the aquifer slightly. Re: The Weather is Crazy
While that is usually the case, this summer in Southeast New Mexico has been different. There have been unusually heavy, recurrent rains in the past two months.scumdevils86 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 23, 2021 7:05 am I've read there's some concern that all this rain in a short period won't actually help the drought a ton. Using the "US Drought Monitor Comparison Slider" (https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/Maps/Com ... lider.aspx), much of my region has transitioned from "Exceptional Drought" to "No Drought" in just two months!! Really shocking!!!
Try it out - you can pick comparison dates at the state level!!

Re: The Weather is Crazy
Looks like the next 6 or 7 hours doesn't really have much rain. Earlier it looked like it would pour all day. Might be a bit oversold...
Re: The Weather is Crazy
Rained for 3-4 hours in mid town, check out the 1 day totals:
Check out this video of the Santa Cruz near Twin Peaks: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1697150 ... 5046850068
The Pantano is bank to bank which you rarely ever see. You can tell by the mud on the bike path this was at least 2-3' deeper earlier this morning

Don't worry G, that breakfast burrito you posted will plug the flow of anything for a while. Then watch out.

I listened to the warnings and agreed not to ride my bike in this morning. Looks like I missed the best day ever to ride my bike. It was 73 degrees and clear.

Re: The Weather is Crazy
One of my brothers new to 4WD wanted to go up to Chiva Falls and watch the water. My other very experienced 4WD said that is a really foolish thing to do. He said last time he was up there many years ago after a monsoon, he spent the whole time pulling people out of streams.

Yea looks like a big, overhyped bust. No rain really projected to fall the rest of the day and the chances of rain tomorrow have plummeted as well.

Re: The Weather is Crazy
Runoff in Tucson goes north in the Santa Cruz River.
The Sant Cruz doesn’t make it to the Gila, it ends in Pinal County. It just soaks into the ground. I’d say, a lot of it gets recharged into the aquifer.
