Where did you hear a 2 year deal?

Re: 2014 Arizona Diamondbacks
It's a confirmed 2-year deal with a 3rd-year team option.azgreg wrote:Where did you hear a 2 year deal?
So let's say this season sees moderate improvement, but is largely spent developing young talent or showcasing for trade veteran talent. Let's say they win 70-75 games. Is that enough to justify exercising team option? Doubtful. So he enters year 2 sacrificing long-term for short-term to pad a few more wins to get that TO for year 3. Does it come? Does he lose the lockerroom? Do the young players listen to a sub-500, lame duck manager about the changes in technique or intensity they need going forward figuring he won't be there long term?
3+1TO.
That makes sense. But two years may as well be an interim.

Thanks.
Re: 2014 Arizona Diamondbacks
A two year deal seems very very odd to me for a new hire. Anyone know if this has been done before in MLB or other sports. I agree on your interim point as it seems pretty close to that. Almost as if they couldn't reach an agreement with the guy they really wanted so they will take Hale for now.JMarkJohns wrote:It's a confirmed 2-year deal with a 3rd-year team option.azgreg wrote:Where did you hear a 2 year deal?

Re: 2014 Arizona Diamondbacks
So I asked a few media types on Twitter why just 2 years, explaining it will take longer than two years to rebuild the worst team in baseball.
One fan took exception to my use of "Rebuild" and felt the need to gloss over the point of the post to demonstrate his Homerism through an attempted organizational knowledge pissing match where he explains away last season as an injury fluke (compared situation to the Rangers), discredits the notion top prospects require development over years, ignores that many top prospects don't work out all to justify his stance the Diamondbacks aren't in a rebuild.
Irony is he thinks the two year deal is smart because of Hale's inexperience, the exact reason it's dumb and that his idea of success for these upcoming years is unlikely, is a ways away, and in need of more than just a stretch interim manager.
Whatever.
Said I was an idiot for not knowing about MLB-ready studs like Bradley, Shipley, Blair, who apparently will have Maddux/Smoltz/Glavine like seasons in Hale's first two years.

Re: 2014 Arizona Diamondbacks
I don't have a problem with the contract. Hale is going to have to prove it on the field and show he can be a quality manager. I wouldn't be judging him by wins and losses though. I would rather see that he isn't a complete idiot and making some of the same mistakes we see nonstop from some of these managers. Would rather see the team is improving, but any expectations that this team is competing are delusional. Competing would be a 98th percentile projection for this team where everything comes up right.

Arizona getting LHP Robbie Ray and at least one more P prospect.
Maybe they have eyes on a middle-infielder with early pick in draft?

Ray seems like a mediocre prospect.JMarkJohns wrote:Arizona getting LHP Robbie Ray and at least one more P prospect.

Hope the INF has some potential.

Any insight?

Seems like they're definitely committing to Chris Owings moving forward.JMarkJohns wrote:Arizona getting LHP Robbie Ray and at least one more P prospect.

Drafted C Oscar Hernandez in Rule 5 draft.
Word is he needs some time, but has all the tools, especially behind the plate.
