Deafening thunder, hammering rain, 1/2 mile visibility, and hail.

*edit: it almost sounds like waterlogged cowbells

For the last two days, looking up the Mogollon rim towards Flag, in the evenings as the sun sets on the sinister build-up, it looks like Mordor.

Living in the mountains of New Mexico now for 7 weeks and yesterday was my first real snow storm. White knuckle driving on icy snowy roads to work, shovelling a driveway and putting down salt, the works. I've driven while it's snowing in Tucson but never on roads caked with unplowed or salted ice and snow. Definitely is a learning experience for this Phoenix raised and Tucson living adult.

What kind of vehicle do you have? I imagine AWD/4WD would be popular in such a climate.

Didn't realize they salt out west. Growing up in Michigan, it was standard practice, which was hell on the undercarriage of cars. All year round you were dealing with rusty bolts and trying not to sheer them even if you could get them free.

I took my kids to the snow when they were little, but have no plans to ever be in it again.

It's only snowed once in Maine so far. I bought a new Subaru Legacy premium back in September, mostly for the AWD. What AWD does is all 4 tires are controlled independently. So if one tire drives over a patch of ice, that tire will be deactived and the other tires with traction will control the vehicle. I believe Subaru makes the best affordable AWD on the market. It's made for winter. The best Subarus are Foresters or Outbacks, especially the Wilderness trim.

Are snow tires with the embedded spikes still a thing? We had summer tires and winter tires.

Yes. Winter tires can have studs, at least here in Maine. Another thing I learned is needed in winter, and especially on ice are snow boots with cleats.

When I walked to my car after work it was very slippery, after the rain freezes on the asphault. A almost fell 3 times. I bouth a pair of NexGrip boots, made in Canada. On the heel of the boot is a metal clip than can be open or closed. I move it to the open position and I have a few cleats that will break through the ice and stop me from slipping. You go inside a building, the clip closes and the cleats aren't used.

Yep, especially when you get up in the mountains in the winter you will hear them quite frequently

Got another 4+ inches of snow overnight here in NM. Had to have the fiance take me to work in her car since no way my car could do it. Spent 40 minutes this morning shoveling and salting to get her car unburied.

Going to be 75 today here on the Central Coast. But down to the 50's on Monday.

0% chance of snow 365 days a year here, and that's the way I like it!

2 feet in three days?

Hahaha.

Not sure about 35 mph sustained winds for 40 straight hours.

Might need to start the generator.
Arizona State might have the most surprisingly anemic history in men's basketball of any program that you might think is better than it is.

I've been reading it has been dropping 30 degrees in 9 minutes in Montana. My brother lives in Dowagiac, Michigan and close to Lake Michigan is expected to receive 18 inches of snow before the lake side effect starts hitting. My guess is 3 feet minimum. It is going to be a deep freeze in Houston.

As for Maine we will get hit with the nor' easter, but it will be rain and close to 50 degrees. We are going to get 1-3 inches of rain, coupled with the melting snow from last week, major flooding is expected. Then add in the 35 mph sustained winds with gusts up to 60 mph and I'm making myself a poncho out of a trash liner (very redneck thing to do). I am really glad I bought a Subaru for this weather.

This cold front is just barely missing me by like 30 miles in NM. Temp will be like 10 degrees cooler here tomorrow but still almost 40. Like less than an hour east it's dropping 40 degrees in a few hours

The Rocky Mountain ranges stop the cold frond, which is dropping down from Canada…

… I’m in Roswell, and its 26 right now (15 wind chill)

This isn’t a Canadian storm. It is actually Siberian. This storm would not have reached the US 20 years ago. It would have stayed in the Arctic Circle.

You're way off on this!! "Alberta Clippers" (Term coined in 1960's for a common phenomena) have been a common type winter storm in North America.

We are going to have a flash freeze tonight. We are receiving 1 1/2 inches of rain. It is going to turn cold quickly and freeze. All roads will be like an ice skating rink. I might have to stay at work tonight, if they don’t salt and sand the roads enough.
