fun fact, the uofa had its own bbs system in the 90s called 'cat chat bbs. someone demo'ed it in a class i was taking. iirc, the userbase was mostly kids from the MIS club and their friends.

My friend bought a computer around 1990. He was in an Engineering program. I recall he accessed some "site". I thought it was through the school. All I recall is that he downloaded a pic.i pretty sure it was Johnny Carson. Took about 3 minutes.

I worked at an university back when Bitnet was king. I was able to chat online to one of my brothers who was a UA student on the school's VAX 11/780.


Then the internet came in and we lost the chat function. No WWW or graphics then either, just ascii. Only colleges and the government had access to the internet then.

We downloaded images as ASCII text, combined all the pieces using VI, the converted ASCII to binary. Took about 10 or 20 minutes to do all that manual processing per image.

Probably 95% of the images be downloaded off of usenet was porn. Took forever, but we thought it was fantastic.

I ran a couple of BBSs back in the early 90s in High School. They were just one liner sites, but I tied up the line so often that my parents just got me my own line. Good times.
