Now that's when America was great! My southern Oregon buddy planted 50 patches a year planning to lose 75% of them. The $ he made, despite getting busted, was, well ..... $80k in 1979 seemed like all the money in the world.
80K back then was all the money in the world. What did a vet cost $10-11K?
Probably. Bear in mind that that $80k was tax free. My buddy was pretty swift and he laundered it through a treeplanting buddy into real estate. He bought a trailer park and then flipped houses and such. Anyway, all I know is that a new Datsun 240Z was about $2200 in 1972. sigh

I remember that 3.2 beer in CO very well. At the time I was living there, the drinking age for beer was 18+, and for hard drinks 21+. I thought then in the 70s as I do now, that having a younger drinking age for light beer is a really good way to get the youths into situations with alcohol like a bar, since it's near impossible to get too drunk on light beer. Too drunk to drive yes, but not to make terrible decisions.

Who ever needed alcohol or drugs in order to make terrible decisions at 18?

We're up to 13 in the AP poll, but how does Texas Tech lose to us and move up one spot ahead of us?

Has the 13th ranked team in the nation ever missed the tournament? Will this be the first time?

Guys we are not the 13th ranked team in the country. We are playing good with an active defense and hopefully continue to get that effort. The second half against BYU and the full game against TT has shown great progress on the defensive end. Will that continue? Will we be able to play well and ignore the high fives? This team lives on the edge. The defensive effort could be the difference maker but must be shown to be consistent. If we can do that then the skies the limit but way to early to get our flowers.

Tomorrow is a typical trap game. Had a big win over TT and have a huge game at home against Houston on Saturday. We can't afford to look past anyone. If we do we will be behind Houston by a game when we play. Go Cats!!!!!!!

Chicat wrote: Sat Feb 08, 2025 11:56 pm I’m worried about this KState game. They are currently playing their best basketball of the season while we are a(nother) man down if Townsend can’t play, traveling out to the middle of nowhere Kansas for an early week game before we go up against Houston at home in the biggest game of the season so far.

But if any team is up for the challenge, it’s this one.
yeah - i'm expecting a rough time up in otherManhattan. it's kind of wild that espn's BPI predictor - or at least the stats behind it - is giving the 'cats a generous 76% chance of winning by a 7+ point margin. by contrast, it gave arizona just a 54% chance of winning / <1pt on the road at byu last week, and 68% / 5pts against TT at mckale. agree that kstate is playing at their best, and they'll be balling with a chip on their shoulder. similar to arizona, it's impressive how they've totally flipped the results from the frontside of their season to what we see now. gonna be a great game.

I was thinking the same thing but then looked at the teams around us in the rankings. Who should really be above us? We're one of the hottest teams in the country, if not the hottest. The last month and a half, we're easily a top 10 team with one loss. Our early season struggles are holding us back from being in the top 10 right now.

I went back and looked at their schedule with W and L. This team lost to teams that were/are not very good on but seems to have a complete turnaround in the last 5 games. Will it continue? BEAR DOWN.

So is there a chance we can’t get out Tuesday night and won’t get back to Tucson until sometime on Wednesday?

We would lose a day of prep for Houston. Hoping we don’t get distracted by this weather and of course we travel safe

I’ve watched three of those games and the eye test bears that out. I can’t believe they are hovering around .500 with how well they’ve been executing. Not sure what was going on when they lost 9 of 10, but they sure as shit turned it around.

AZDesertSwarm or another of the FB pundits had an interview with a KSU pundit. Said the surge was due to the emergence of their point guard who was pretty awful early in the season.

Also that KSU does not have a go to guy like Caleb Love, so any of the 5 starters can be a scoring threat.

That and Houston plays tonight at home given them an extra days practice or rest. Hopefully we get out tonight or it might be tomorrow night.

Yeah, a "lid" is an ounce. Standard price for standard quality street smoke was $10 a lid.

Now Michoacan or purple or gold or Kona cost more. Like $40 a lid.

Back then, I knew two groups of folks in SEAZ who imported large quantities of Mexican - they didn't sell/consume any of their product locally; it was all shipped "Back East"; loaded with seeds & stems; it was equivalent to drinking Coors or Bud, and calling it "beer".

I had another friend, who lived in Cali, who dealt to "dealers" for their own consumption - high quality, usually sensemila, from more distant regions. The above $10/$40 differential correlates, though some exotics could be more expensive. Consumers of these types were typically more discriminating in their intoxicant preferences...

BTW, most of those large quantity folks did time in both State and Fed corrections institutions (alternately referred to as "Grad School" or "Finishing School"); and, the high-end guy lived the good life! They are all enjoying their old age today!

CTL said in postgame something to the effect of "maybe we are tired, it's a tough conference ".
Maybe he needs to play a few more guys a few minutes each half.
We looked tired often tonight. I thought we looked tired on Saturday.

The first couple weeks of conference play I was enjoying how games were officiated. The last couple weeks I have been unimpressed. Not that would have made a difference, but they missed the back court call at end, too many reviews and the worst was rescinding the screen and then calling a Flagrant on Bradley

I think Trey's loss is tiring us out easier. Obviously we don't want him playing a ton of minutes, but if he can give guys a break here and there that should help keep us fresher.

Yes I think that’s spot on - no Townsend to eat some minutes, ADO was basically permabenched in 2nd half because of his lackluster defense so we were down 2. CB rode the pine a lot in 2nd half as well (probably due to defensive lapses and a few bad 3s)

This was the spot we needed someone like Stephen to be able to soak up minutes in front court when Awaka was in foul trouble as well

Having 6 playable players is a problem as alluded to above especially wrt fatigue but this was a poorly played game by Arizona last night.

A. Arizona is a very poor 3FG shooting team. Good news is it is a good 2FG and FT shooting team and that typically it doesn’t take a lot of 3s (roughly 35% of possessions which is roughly 300th nationally). Last night the Cats took > 50% of their looks from 3 — on a night when they couldn’t hit water if they fell out of a boat. And during another game in which the only guy on the team who can shoot a 3 was faced with an opponent who played him off of the court.

B. Lot of standing around on the perimeter whilst on offense to my eyes especially from Love. Possible this led to a relatively low total of assists from Arizona. Ran some perimeter ballscreens that mostly did not stress the defense but little in the way of backdoors, duckins, and screen and crashes w Veesaar and the like. Possible that the Cats were fatigued or just not that in to playing last night.

C. TOs were obviously a huge issue and always are when you’re 1) not shooting it well 2) facing an opponent who is both pretty good defensively and plays relatively slow/low possession games and 3) are on the road. Think KSU was +13 for points off of TO which was a big part of the reasons as to why Arizona lost. Worse, a bunch of those TOs were soft/not forced.

D. KSU missed a lot of FTs (which admittedly is what they do) and missed a boatload of 3s (1-19). KSU hits its FTs and 3s and the poorness of Arizona’s play would have stood out more as the game would have been/felt out of touch for the last 30 minutes.

I would burn the tape from this one and move on to Houston if I was Lloyd. Just a poorly played game from a team who didn’t look all that stoked to be there (and/or was fatigued).

I truly think it was fatigue. You could see the passes had zero on them. Love and Bryant looked particularly tired. All of their shots were flat and short.

Nobody had any legs last night and it’s due to playing a lot of minutes in a lot of tough games. There are too many guys in our 8-deep who cannot be relied on in crunch time and haven’t been.
Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?

Tommy agrees, but amazing he didn't realize how poorly the Cats were shooting. Kind of odd, since CSM was a stats freak and would know exactly.

“Maybe guys are starting to get a little tired,” Lloyd said. “I didn’t realize there were only three made 3s made in the game. That’s not very pretty.”

Guess they just need to man up and ignore tired legs. Having 7 players in your rotation was terrible for Kriisa and Tubelis in the tourney, they could barely make it down the court.

Tommy Lloyd: ‘Being in a conference like this, you just got to suck it up’

Yes, the offense seemed to just not have anything going for it last night - lots of standing around the perimeter and dribbling/passing around it, the times we were moving towards the hoop off ball seemed to work very well. Team just seemed gassed overall, lots of short shots and unable to finish shots that had been falling past few weeks (especially on JB / Caleb side).

I think the 6 man deep is going to be a serious issue going into March. Our guys are going to be wiped out come tourney time if they are having to play for almost the whole game.

Also a bit concerned on the CB side - he keeps committing bad fouls on defense by being out of position and/or gambling and hoping he can recover. Think CTL had enough second half last night as he had him on bench for a good part of the 2nd half if I remember right.

JB and Love had 38 and 39 minutes last night. Combined 0-10 3 PT.

ADO played 15 minutes, and has gone 5 games now without a made 3 pointer.

UA is 282nd in made 3 PT %. https://www.teamrankings.com/ncaa-baske ... -point-pct

This season reminds me so much of when UA was bounced in the tourney in the first round v. Princeton playing 7.

Maybe Tommy should do what Lute used, not really give a rats ass about the conference tourney and save the players for the NCAAs. Tommy focusing on winning the regular season PAC, and winning the PAC tourney just wore the players down too much.

I would rather us lose a few games and get a lower seed if it meant keeping players fresh and injury free

This was exactly what I was thinking of, seems very reminiscent of that team losing to Princeton. Busted our ass to win the P12 tourney, Kriisa got hurt as well during that tournament.

We need to have a reliable 7-8 deep who can be counted on for points and minutes. Also need to find some way to bring in some shooters in the next year, its been our kryptonite for what seems like forever now (was York the last real gunner we had from 3PT?)

I was literally yelling at Lloyd to put in Boswell the last 5 minutes of the Princeton game. Believe Kriisa had a twisted ankle, and really could not do anything end of game. Tubelis was gassed too.
