Sean Miller and Zone Offense

Post by Frybry02 »

I am sick of people attacking miller for the team's lack of production vs zone offenses. We all know that miller is a defense first coach and I have no issue with his coaching philosophy. It is also obvious that Miller has done a good enough job preparing his teams against zones. I would love to see the shot chart for today's game. The players were in put position to make layups and 12 footers but they had trouble converting. Sure I would have love to see Ashley be the free throw option but his foul trouble, especially his dumb 4th foul, limited that option. Would it be nice to have that consistent shooter? Of course. Thankfully, York played that role today.

I am confident in Millers coaching both offensively and defensively. It was because of our defense we won this game even though the team missed numerous layups. there is no other coach I want leading Arizona. In miller I trust.

Done with my vent. On to LA.

It's clear the players are extremely uncomfortable attacking a zone - gee I wonder, could that have anything to do with UA never ever under any circumstances deploying/practicing a zone themselves? That zone D, it's not nasty/tough enuff for us no no!

Nah, it's the players fault......

Gabe York is the only reason we made the S16 as a 2 seed!! Gabe York, the 3-star amongst 5* 5* 5*, gabe misses some threes we are dunzo - another pre-FF Flameout in the books

When will miller get over himself and explore zone if for no other reason than to be prepared for it?! 2 million isn't enough I guess.

It doesn't take a crystal ball to know that top 5 recruiting classes will go bye-bye if you max out at the Elite Eight over and over for 5plus years. :(

Every village has at least one idiot, and this one is in need of a new lead in that department. No need to submit a resume, your contributions make a very compelling argument.

I'd be interested to see a list of programs that have reached 2 Elite 8's in the previous 4 seasons, with another Sweet 16 mixed in.

That would probably be a real Who's Who of stumbling college BB programs.

Ok, Wayne tinkle and herb sendek say hi. Neither made the NCAAs - how did gabe do then was he able to save the team against those juggernauts that just happened to use zone?

ASU might've end up playing Miami in the NIT. The same Miami that beat Duke in Cameron - by more than the combined total of all 3 of our road losses.

Quick - somebody contact the HOF; Krzyzewski needs to be removed immediately!

What was the last team to play Arizona straight up man to man?
It's a huge compliment to the offense and Coach Miller that nobody will do that - the 'Cats would murder them.

They are getting all manners of zones thrown at them, 1-3-1, 2-3, 3-2, etc. and yet they keep winning.

They often struggle earlier in games against a zone, but TJ figures it out and they end up winning.
Our offensive numbers have been getting better throughout the season. We have won 19 of our last 20
by an average of over 20 points.

It is just such a lazy argument that Arizona can't beat teams that zone or Coach Miller can't coach against one.

I agree sendek is a HOFer. Ok how about tinkle! I didn't mention UNLV/ Rice either did gabe save the team then vs those RPI 100-200 juggernauts?

Gabe avg 38% from 3
Gabe shot far above his avg vs ohio st 55%

Are we counting on gabe to make 5 threes each game now shooting 55% from 3? Hi can I smoke some of that sweet grass you borrowed from krystowiack?

Your entire argument seems centered around the premise that we have 3 bad losses.

Quick, show me a team that doesn't have a bad loss (other than kentucky)......

What we saw today was exactly how you beat a zone.

First, you can shoot the other team out of their zone. Mission accomplished.

Second, you can penetrate and dish for easy buckets. Mission accomplished.

Yes, we struggled early and that first half was ugly, but towards the end of the half we were already improving, and in the 2nd, well, we demolished them.

Speaking of York, he had a great drive/dish for a dunk. I thought he was going to fall backwards, shoot and get blocked, and instead he fell backwards and just laid it right off to his team mate.

.....

every team has bad losses, at this point you need to move on and get over them.

::::edit

Oh and another thing, we didn't just shoot the 3 poorly in the first half, we shot poorly from all over the floor. The looks were there, the shots just didnt fall.
It's long past time to bring this back to the court, let's do it with a small update:

What would the score have been had York shot 38% from 3, instead of 55%? Check.

What if Rondae and Stanley shot their normal %age from the field today? Check.

I'll be adding you to my foe list while you blast Kanye from your dorm room.....

Don't feed the troll, fellas.

Arizona facing zone is just the way it's going to be from here on out. Nobody has the guys to guard Ashley, Stanimal, RHJ and TJ man to man. TJ is also too good a distributor to play man against because the second one of your defenders loses somebody TJ will find the open guy. Each zone is going to be a little different; different scheme, different talent and it will take these guys a few minutes to poke and prod and find where they can attack it.

Exactly. Here's their first basketball-related post, just for reference:
RiseAndFire wrote:This won't be a popular view r but I'm going to call my shot for the UA bball program over the next 5 years. Here is the outlook:

- Miller and his staff continue to work their butts off on the R-trail, to fantastic result! The classes we reel in are ridiculous year after year! Yay us! :P
- This and next season feature a squad filled to the brim with NBA talent excelling on D!! Grrrr we play really tough D, nastiness is required grrrrrr! Good times
- However, offensive is shall we say, not a focus and never has been ( offense doesn't require nastiness, just practice  ). As a result we see some of the most inane, boring, painful offense ever subjected upon elite talent. When your best play is the baseline inbounds lob....damn
- Predictably the team with Final Four in its sights but an O that can't score when the games on the line will stall out by the E8. Ditto next year
- Recruits will eventually stop beating a path to Tucson as a result of all these 5* loaded squads looking like dog poo on offense, with periodic flourishes. Who wants to play in a restrictive, unimiaginative scheme if you're not making FFs routinely - hell we can't even win the G-damn P12 tourney once with Staples/MGM 60%% full of UA fans!
- By 2017-18 season the program isn't reeling in the top 5 classes but has regressed back to the Xavier mean: making the tourney every year with 23 wins and upsetting a 4 seed occasionally
- rinse and repeat, angst with Miller grows and grows

Live the cats every day and I Watch every game from the RedBlue on, but I just don't see a defense first/only approach getting over the hump for a FF or Natty. We'll win a Rose Bowl first

Sorry for the dystopian future - but it's apparent this is the road were on. You just can't keep reeling in the top five classes without winning the giant stuffed panda bear once in a while

Yep, good post. We're the badass motherfuckers that walk in the gym and the other team adjusts to us, never the other way around. Miller and TJ are amazing...couldn't have better captains for the ship.

Quick question: Which team has scored the most points so far in this tournament?

8-)
Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?
