I got laid off this morning. Never experienced that before. Generous severance and a nice letter of recommendation from my boss. I think I'll take a day or two to regroup and then go hard looking for jobs.

Damn that sucks. Been there and no matter how gentle the fall, it’s a kick in the nuts.
Time to engage your network. Reconnect with anyone you ever even remotely came into contact with who is even peripherally involved in your industry. You truly never know what’s out there and it’s almost always who you know and not what you know.

Well, just got the call. My wife is the new store manager for the Las Vegas Dillard's.
My wife's old store manager (Desert Sky Mall in SW Phoenix) called her the other day to say she was retiring in 3 weeks. The district manager asked her if my wife would be interested in taking over.

I don't think so. They would need to make it worth our while. I've never sold a house after owning it less than a year but I don't think teh results would be all that good.

Do these people think your wife is part of a checker game? Chess? Tic tac toe? They're adorable.

We moved to Mesa in the 80s and hated it so much we sold out townhouse after 9 months and moved back to Tucson. Luckily the interest rate increased .25 points in that time and we came out even. We used a For Sale by Owner company so there was only a $1000 fee instead of 6%. We were young so we didn't have much to move. Don't think we would do that now. It took us 3 large Uhauls to move to Boise

My neighbors are trying to sell their home and they haven’t gotten a sniff. The market has gone real soft. Think people are reluctant to make a big purchase with an 8% rate not knowing if we are in for the mother of all recessions.
I’d make Dillards agree to buy your home.

That'll never happen. I talked to our realtor and he thinks the better option might to be rent it out instead.

What are the chances it will still exist in 5 years?

Very few Dillards in CA and they are in shithole cities so not familiar with them. But seems they have $500M in debts, but over a billion $ in cash.

Apparently they are not having the same issues that Macy's is having. Maybe move into some abandoned Macy's stores, but at least locally, they are being turned into housing.

A guy we know used to have 2 Vegas homes, and when he and his partner moved to Tucson, he rented them. He said they were utterly trashed when he decided to sell them. Maybe super high security deposits would work.

Need a really good rental management company, especially when you are hours away.
My daughter was going to rent her NC house out when her husband was shipped to Japan, but decided against it since during the pandemic landlords could not kick tenants out due to non-payment of rent. Really hard to make the mortgage payment with no rent coming in on a sailor's salary.

I get ya. I'm not a fan of teh idea. I just don't see a way to not lose money selling in the first year especially when they're still building in here.

Any tips on how to whether a change in reporting structure and the new person coming in with their vision?
I see a path for me in the organization, just any to do my best to make them see it as well.

Wish I could say one way or the other but it will likely depend on your new boss. First thing I would do is ask them about their communication style. Do they prefer email, in-person, phone, text, etc and then I’d ask for some time to chat through team goals and how you had been working to achieve them in the past and ask if they see any opportunities for improvement.
Also, pucker up and kiss some serious ass. Works for me…

Yup…I can play that game even though I hate it.
Old boss gave me the card, “if you get asked why anything wasn’t done, just put it on me”
Thanks for the advice.
If only I was intermediate Spanish, I’d so take that Rome It UN job….

Edit: I'm wondering what the Forest Service offices I used to frequent are facing right now. There were some red-ass boys and girls used to sucking Uncle Sugar's tits while bitching about government spending.

Good thing I don't work anymore. I was actually much more effective at home, since there are a lot less distractions.
Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed an executive order mandating that all state agencies and departments that continue to offer remote work require a minimum of four in-person days per work week starting on July 1. Exceptions may be offered on a case-by-case basis.
C'mon down federal workers!
Amid mass firings in the federal government, Newsom’s order also includes a provision to streamline hiring of former federal employees in key roles such as firefighting, weather forecasting, forest management, mental health and the sciences.

They're being pretty quiet.
On another note, I have a friend who is a retired FBI agent who served around 30 or more years. I asked him what he thought about the current policy of hunting agents who had investigated the Jan 6 traitors. He responded that it was as bad as my question implied.

I managed to get a new job just as my severance was about to run out. It's in a different field, pays significantly less, and has lousy benefits but it will keep a roof over my head and I think I will enjoy the work. Huge sense of relief.

Brother, if you're happy, I'm happy. I'd hate to be in the workforce under these conditions. It seems like a what-circle-of-hell-are-you-currently-in sort of world right now.

I am seriously ready for something lower stress as I approach retirement in a few years. As long as it has decent health insurance I am willing to make a lot less.

This is, ironically, going to be higher stress and a lot more work than my old job. I just didn't have the experience or qualifications people were looking for when I was trying to get another IT job. Didn't even get an interview so after a month and a half or so, I had to start applying elsewhere.
I'd rather work longer hours for lower pay than default on my mortgage though. I have a feeling things are going to get very bad for a very long time and I'm grateful to be employed.
