It is -12 and feels like -30. Good day not to do a goddamn thing.

This is easily the coldest December I've experienced in the 15 years I've lived in the Chicago area.

Kids are on a 2-hour delay for school so they don't have to stand at the bus stop in these current temps, but other than that it's business as usual.

It's even freezing out in AZ. Was 25 between Prescott and Verde Valley most of Sunday, and just dead cold again today.

I think that's what bothers me the most about this latest cold spell: The lack of precipitation. Cold fronts with rain/snow are always welcome, but this near-vacuum that freeze-dries all the moisture out of you has not been pleasant.

It isn't always a paradise in an Arizona winter. We still live in a brutal desert here that can feel like the surface of the moon without wind chill--and joint-creaking with it.

My daughter lives in Boise and we were face timing her and she was showing us all the snow. Pretty crazy. She has had to borrow her fiance's 4runner to drive to work.

Brrr.

As I was leaving the AZ Bowl tailgate, I had to remove my jacket.

Most snow on the ground in town at one time that I've seen in 20+ years here. Usually it warms right up and melts off in a day or two as well, but this cold snap hasn't let up . . . Almost had a Christmas Eve heart attack shoveling the walk!

went up to a high school soccer tournament in Prescott a couple of weeks ago and made the mistake of having the heater on and the seat warmers on the whole way. Got a nice fine layer of sweat, then stepped out into an 8 pm game with a 25 degree kickoff temperature plummeting into the teens by game end. And with me just standing there (it was too cold to sit on the bleachers).

Amateur move for someone who grew up in cold. Caught me a nice cold...one of those once-every-5-year ones.

Sac slated 50/50 for snow down to 1000ft on Tuesday!

It won't stick but the dusting will be nice!

No big deal, just your typical upper Midwest mid-January thunderstorms and torrential downpours. There's a river flowing through my neighhborhood where there wasn't one yesterday.

60 degrees right now at 9:16 PM, with 50 mph winds, thunder, and heavy rain.

Same. It's rare anymore that we get those bitterly cold 25 degree nights in Tucson. Just usually is in the 40s at night now.

I haven't worn a winter coat in years it seems. A few weeks a year, I need a jacket and that's it.
I play tennis in the morning with shorts and a couple of layers which normally come off and I'm in a tee-shirt after about 15 minutes.

Yup winter in Tucson has been reduced down to maybe 7-8 days in December or early January where it's in the low 30s at night and then winter is over.

As of yesterday morning, have had this much rain at my Central Cali house since New Years, and rained more last night.

Not a drought buster though, but take all we can get.

That's not typical anywhere.

There has basically been a river of moisture streaming into California the past week plus. Just an unprecedented amount of liquid streaming into the state. Great news for the drought.

the drought maps I was looking at a bit ago showed that most all areas of "exceptional" drought in California and Nevada have disappeared over the last week. still quite a large amount of extreme drought areas though.

They will declare the drought "over" and shelve all plans and ideas for additional water infrastructure such as storage and desalinization, then spend the money on bullet trains instead.

Even more rain coming the next couple days. 1-2 inches in Tucson. Mountains around town are supposed to get 18+ inches of snow.

70-80mph winds with blinding rain in Sac right now.

Question: how to you go about coordinating a downed wooden fence with a neighbor you've never met and is never home? (neighbor has several residences in the area) Do you split the cost down the middle? How does this work?

Whose fence is it? If it's theirs you throw it in their yard. If it's yours you fix it.

Let your insurance take care of it.

Otherwise, you split the cost.

The good neighbor fence is extremely popular out here.

We've had less than a half inch of snow in all of January, and with temps forecasted to be between 40 and 60 through the next week, it doesn't look like that's changing.

They were predicting a horrible La Nina winter with tons of snow and cold, so this has been a nice surprise. And the added bonus is that my Fox News-brainwashed father in law can't say shit about global climate change being a hoax like he always does when we get a typical cold winter day.

neighbors fence? Not quite sure about the easements/property line, but I think its on their lot. Although I think we'll try to get insurance to cover it.

If you bought a joint-owned fence with your house, you'd know about it through disclosure, just like you'd know whether a joint car port is half your responsibility.

If a fence goes up next door when you own the house, it's best to ascertain that it's going up on the neighbor's property, and not yours. Unfortunately, a survey can set you back like five thousand bucks.

It's 23 degrees above normal this morning after our third round of thunderstorms this month and tomorrow it's looking like it will be in the 60s.

That's typical for mid-January in the upper Midwest, right?
