I was reading the other day that the 400M is the hardest race to run, as it's impossible to run it without pain.

It’s a brutal event. Both of my girls did the 400m

They hated it.

I refuse to consider any contest, regardless of the physical challenges and skills involved, to be a "sport" when the outcome depends upon "judges" scoring the performance.

While I only selected a few sports to follow, I did sample highlights of many more.

I thought it was a great Olympics, with some truly exceptional performances!!

I can't believe a single woman won medals in the 5K, 10K and marathon in the same Olympics - just astounding!

Grant Fisher's bronze medals in both 10K & 5K were awesome for the USA

USA's Golds in MBB, WBB and Women's soccer were hard-fought and fun to follow! Steph Curry - GOAT!!!!

IMNSHO, Paris did a great job of hosting. Opening ceremonies will not possibly be matched by LA, or likely anyone else, especially in terms of venue; Great incorporation of cultural heritage and national pride; no major disruptions; I think huge majority of athletes had a great time...

Social media & political bs (predominantly US-based) was to be expected, and easily ignored/discounted.

You have to balance the number of medals vs. number of events entered, country population, and GDP to get a real accurate gauge of who did “the best”.

The Dutch Olympian added a victory in the longest race of the Games to her bronze medals in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. “What was I thinking?” she said afterward.

Sifan Hassan couldn’t stop laughing at herself.

“What have I done? What is wrong with me?” she said of the inner monologue that had echoed in her head through the 26.2 punishing miles of the Olympic women’s marathon on Sunday.

Hassan had already logged three Olympic races, and two bronze medals from them. She ran the first heat in the 5,000 meters on Aug. 2, the final of the 5,000 on Monday and the 10,000 final on Friday night. Then, only 37 hours later, she propelled herself across the starting line in the marathon, the most demanding race of them all, and ended up crossing the finish line first.

An Ethiopian-born runner who competes for the Netherlands, Hassan, 31, had described her Olympic schedule — which initially was supposed to also include the 1,500 — as one driven by curiosity. She wanted to know if she could do all three events, requiring close to 40 miles of Olympic racing. The goal, she emphasized, was not necessarily to win medals in each race: Instead, it was simply to complete all three.

No athlete had taken medals in all three events at the same Olympic Games since 1952, when Emil Zatopek won three golds for what was then Czechoslovakia. In the age of specialization in elite running, though, Hassan’s decision to even try all three races was unusually bold. To claim a medal in all three was, seemingly, unthinkable. Until she did it.

There are always controversies and complaints. In the past, athletes have complained about the accommodations, food, water quality, judges' rulings, etc. And outside critics love to nit-pick various aspects of the ceremonies, and any unfairness they can uncover in the inevitable disruption of everyday life. France did a fine job. The locales were spectacular, reminiscent of the London Games. Such a spectacle in Paris was bound to be flamboyant, and it certainly was that. From my swivel rocker, the primary complaint were the idiot NBC announcers. In the past, you'd have a Jim McKay or Bob Costas with enough common sense to maintain a level of respect and let a spectacular moment speak for itself. Instead, it was like a middle school field trip with the "talent" blurting out "Wow! Cool! Look at that!", along with helpful exposition like: "The Marseillaise is the French national anthem." No shit...and thank God for DVRs. But otherwise, a thumbs-up. LA will be very lucky to do nearly as well and avoid much criticism in 2028.

Bill Walton declined an invitation to that team due to anti-Vietnam War stance, and resentment over his experiences in the 1970 FIBA World Championships (US lost there, too, to Brazil; and he hated experience under coach Hal Fisher)

The 1972 Olympics was horrific in many ways, with the massacre of the Israeli athletes overshadowing everything else. The basketball game was outrageous. The officials giving the Soviet (pros) chances at the end against the US collegians until they finally "won" also overshadows one-sided officiating throughout the game. When it's that blatant, there should be some recourse after the fact, including checking bank accounts, civil suits, and criminal charges. Another aspect was mummified head coach Henry Iba, who ran a rigid, outdated system. (He was the coach at Oklahoma State from 1934 to 1970.) He made UTEP's Don Haskins look like Fred Snowden. The Miracle On Ice in 1980 was some measure of revenge against the Soviets, but the 1972 basketball miscarriage is forever, and it's all about the refs, Renato Righetto (Brazil), and Artenik Arabadjian (Bulgaria)
