Got a good friend who played football at CSU in the late 90s.
He's uh .... not a happy camper.
Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?
The renegotiated buyout has CSU receiving $5 million cash and $2 million guaranteed to play at Florida in the future, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. McElwain had a $7.5 million buyout in his contract.
Amazing isn't it? They're paying about $8M in guaranteed money to make Muschamp and his staff go away an effectively paying a $7M buyout before their new coach has even stepped on campus all so they can replace the hot assistant from four years ago with the hot assistant from three years ago.

Add $3.5M guaranteed for 6 years to the new coach. Total transition: $36M.

I just exchanged some text messages with friends who live in Omaha and are huge husker fans....let's just say their language was a lot more colorful than it normally is
It's long past time to bring this back to the court, let's do it with a small update:
Wow, never thought that he would leave OSU again until he retired or was forced out.
WOW! What does OSU do now?
Upgrade

Riley:
finished ranked 3 out of 14 seasons
6-2 bowl record
2 bowls last 5 years
.541 winning percentage
no conference championships
Went 2-7 in the PAC this year.
Awful hire.

the Nebraska AD is just trolling the fanbase at this point. If you were gonna fire Bo you gotta make a HUGE splash of a hire. this is well....wow
I agree. I think Riley is a steady, solid coach. Does a lot with not a lot of talent. But seems like a pretty lateral move, if not a step down from Pelini.
Mike Riley is a pretty good coach...but...his yearly record at osu since he won 36 games in 4 years from 2006-2009 is 5-7, 3-9, 9-4, 7-6 and 5-7 and is 2-8 vs. Oregon and Washington. Oh and he's like 60
i was going to put the ua/asu records here...but i forgot what they were.

You'd think they're would've fired Bo to bring in some big name guy to win now. But Riley feels like a placeholder caretaker coach to be there for 3-5 years until he retires. Just going to keep the status quo at Nebraska.

though to be honest the big 10 is dog crap. a bag of beans with sticks for arms could coach a team with reasonable talent to 9 wins in that conference.
I find it so interesting when schools talk about wanting to fix one major thing that was wrong with the last coach and that drives their though process (probably too much).
At Florida, they talked about bringing in an offensive guy because Muschamp's offense was so bad. So they looked at McElwain.
We can imagine why Nebraska wants someone the community likes (see: Bo is an asshole).
At Michigan they want someone that can win because Hoke couldn't do that. (Ok I made that one up). But it's interesting to watch the reaction to the last coach guide their hiring decision for the next coach.

I kinda assume there's more to this. In some ways there has to be. Firing 9-4/10-3 Bo for 61 year old Riley by itself, as others have mentioned, basically makes no sense.

I can't believe he is getting paid 3.5m a year. His record certainly isn't deep enough to demand it. Maybe that's just the tax coaches charge in order to put up with all that is involved with the Florida job. You know, the one that made Urban Meyer have heart problems despite his stellar performance.
Most Oregon state fans are ecstatic with him leaving. They're get out from his golden parachute lifetime contract and get to hire someone new and young and can re energize the program to compete.

Head coach in waiting? Let's hope so and he's a little distracted tomorrow night.
I hope Nebraska gives Riley a clothing allowance because the last few years at ntOSU he was dressing like a homeless person.

I would gladly wager that this is viewed as a solid hire 3 years from now. Most people fail to realize what a good coach Riley is given the dumpster fire that is OSU football. The OSU facilities are arguably the worst in the PAC (and there is no money or plans for improvement), and it is nearly impossible to recruit anything more than tier 2 or 3 players to that school. Its just a bad setup all around, and not a job even most up and comers will want to take on given the limitations. I think he is a better game coach and program manager than Bo Pelini. Give him the talent that Nebraska always pulls, coupled with a weak ass conference, and Riley will match Pelini's 9 wins against garbage opponents and be good for a solid upset every year. Great hire, imo.

but...what's the point in firing Bo if Riley will just match what he did at Nebraska? Other than to get a guy who isn't a douchebag.

That's the question: is Mike a 11-1 type coach at Nebraska who's winning conference championships and legitimately competing for playoffs most years?
It's pretty tough for me to say he's that guy, but as with all things time will tell.
Is Tom Osbourne still in administration at UN? Bo was an embarrassment to the University although most of my wife's family in the Midwest loved him. He was just keeping it real. He should have been fired last year. They could have done much better than Riley though. I imagine he will do well but football is everything in Nebraska. My dad was from Nebraska and all of his brothers lived in small farm towns but had houses in Lincoln just to go to Nebraska football games.
So Florida and Nebraska filled there spots pretty quickly. Where is Michigan with there search? I have to wonder if they are waiting for Lester to decide

They seem to think they will announce their coach as soon as the 49ers season ends.
So power 5 open jobs are Michigan, Oregon state and Kansas? I read Kansas is down to Ohio state's co-oc, Texas a&m's wr coach and Nebraska's former oc under pelini.
