47 in Tucson currently. On Thursday and Friday we'll probably just miss getting snow in town. Mt Lemmon is supposed to get 2 feet of snow.

I just hope my cacti and two young fruit trees don’t die. I mean, I guess the native cacti should be fine. :?

Which is apocalyptic there. Since it's been so warm most winters lately they seem to hardly get much snow there. The historical average yearly snowfall is like 21", which I'd bet the last 15 years or so has been more like 12" a year.

I have been scraping frost off my windshield more days than not the last week up here in central coastal Cali.

Can't remember the last time it hit 70 which normally happens a lot, esp in February.

Definitely crazy. I think since about November 10th it has only gotten above 75 like 8-10 times in Tucson. And only like twice since Christmas Eve.

I’ve never scraped ice off my car windows like I have in Tucson in the winter of 2019.

It's always fun meeting people from out of town who are bewildered by the fact that it can occasionally get kinda chilly here. I've frozen my hands scraping ice at 7 am several times this year. Doesn't help that I don't own any winter clothes like a hat or gloves or a scarf or jacket or an ice scraper..

NWS says 36-50" expected on Mt Lemmon with this storm. That would be nearly 100" of snowfall since Christmas

Also, probably more cloudy days since Christmas than Tucson usually gets in whole year.

Are you sure? To average that amount, the snow to liquid equivalent would have to be pretty high.

I've read somewhere and when I was at the observatory up there a few years ago the people up there said the average yearly snowfall is 150-160"

I just wonder if they have a legit observation site up there. That just seems like a really high average to me. I would have guess the average was somewhere in the 50-75" range based on the general lack of moisture. Obviously, that is just a guess though.

Not necessarily. You can have snow with very low water content.

Where I live we get snow systems from Canada and the West Coast that will dump a few inches of snow with a high water content (they call it heart attack snow because it kills old people who shovel the wet heavy stuff). But we also get fluffy light lake effect snow that can pile up to feet but has very low water content. A half inch of liquid precipitation can come in the form of 4 inches of snow or 12+, depending on what type of snow it is.

So I can definitely imagine that Mt. Lemon gets some really light fluffy (almost dry) snow that piles up to the numbers Hater is talking about. Also, you have to consider that air cooling as it rises up over mountains will condense and precipitate even when there is nothing in the valley below. That’s why people say that mountains make their own weather.

Northern Scottsdale is covered with snow. Here in central Phoenix it rained all day and cold, in the low 40's. Heavy rain all night.

Prior to this winter I would've put it at like 50" or less for the recent decade or so.

Yup. There are plenty of times during all seasons in Tucson where we get nothing near a drop of rain in town but it rains at the peak of the mountain just a few miles away.

Oh I know. Just thinking out loud here because why not....General rule of thumb is 10" snow for 1" of rain. Tucson gets about 4" of rain in the possible Mt Lemmon snow months. The equates to say 40" of snow. It generally rains more over the mountains so say its double. Thats still just 80". If we say 8" of rain is accurate, 150" of snow would be almost 19" of snow to 1" of rain. That is pretty high. Additionally, they would have to get more than that 150"+ average quite often which I just don't remember. On average, it just feels like there are not enough storm systems to produce that amount of snow. I'm not saying anyone is wrong here, I'm just saying that would be a surprising average to me.

Anyway, this is a pretty big snow event.

So far it's been pretty lackluster looking at the radar. Phoenix is getting all the moisture seemingly.

The I80 through truckee gets closed down near weekly during the winter.

Pretty hilarious how shitty people are driving with chains or their AWD.

It’s smaller, but the 50 to south lake is a much better way to get to Tahoe and Reno in the winter. No semis either. Can’t get to squaw or northstar however because the west side of Tahoe is always closed to to avalanche risk.

In all my years living in coastal Cali (since 1985) I have never seen it snow. Until yesterday.

The van pool driver, born and raised in this area has never seen snow, and she is in her 50's. Until now.

Near Pismo Beach:

Note I grew up in Michigan, and would have been quite content to never be in snow again.
