Anthony Gimino reports on Scroggin's car accident and how it impacted his summer.
There was a reason why Arizona quarterback Jesse Scroggins began fall camp in the Breakfast Club.
It's a series of grueling early-morning workouts, supervised by the man himself, Rich Rodriguez, for those players who failed to report with the fitness standards demanded by the coaches. Not a club you want to join.
Scroggins was there because he missed about a month of summer training. No fault of his own, though. He was in involved in a car accident in late spring when another driver "T-boned" his car.
"A guy wasn't paying attention," Scroggins said.
"He was coming straight at me and he T-boned me, got me on my side, cracked my windshield and my car shifted right, into a telephone pole, totaled. It was really hard to bounce back, because my life could have been gone.
"There are people out there that don't pay attention, that don't care. There's bad people in the world."
It explains a lot of why Scroggins started camp slowly and behind in conditioning.

Sounds like the QB race is coming down to Scroggins and Anu.

If I had to guess, and this is with no inside info, I'd go with Solomon - Scroggins - Randall - Brewer. I would put Brewer ahead of Randall as far as knowing the system and as a "safe" option, but Randall's athleticism is just too intriguing. Looking forward to 2015, I'd expect Randall to be challenging for a starting spot.

I think you're right, but I am not sure that Randall is a true contender here. It sounds like he will be brought in no matter who the starter is to run a set package of plays with specific personnel so he will see the field this year. Which should be exciting.

I'm hoping they find positions for some of the many backups. Most were 4* recruits. They gotta have some talent, possibly WR, CB, or similar...seems like a waste otherwise.

I imagine Scroggins and Randall will see some playing time in the first 3 games.
I learned that nobody on message boards win taking sides in a QB battle, re: Scott-Foles. I trust this group of coaches will play the player that gives us the best chance to win.

Odds on Anu staying healthy the whole season? It doesn't actually happen that much.
Going to need Scroggins for ASU. I would bet on it.

There was a big discussion on this topic during Coach Rod's first year and history shows he rarely loses a QB to injury. He just wants to be ready in case it happens. So, odds are Anu stays healthy, but we want a back-up QB ready every game.

Very fair, reasonable response ANGcatfan. Forgive me my Denard Robinson flashbacks.
And this is the immediate difference between the new site and the old one. No rude responses from EGB, kylecollins or their ilk.
Just solid discussion. And that is a HUGE step up from the near-trolling we saw on the football boards last late July/early August. We're all in here to talk football--not to tell other people they don't know what the f- they're talking about, like we know any more than they do.

Javelle Allen only got in 4 games last year and only attempted one pass. Fortunately BJ was fairly injury free.
Miller said he made a mistake in not developing a bench after Ashley went down, let's hope RR doesn't make the same mistake.

Totally with you Merk. Coach Rod said several times over the last 2 years that he made a mistake by not getting the back-up more time, but he has also said he is overly cautious about pulling his starter.
We need to get at least the #2 an opportunity to play in case he actually has to play in a critical game. Coach Rod needs to make Coach Smith responsible for ensuring the back-up gets some playing time and then listen to him when the time comes.

8. Whoever starts at quarterback for Arizona will pass for more than 3,000 yards: Rich Rodriguez announced that Anu Solomon will be starting for the Wildcats against UNLV, but after that, we'll see. The Pac-12 blog believes that by the fourth week of the season, Arizona will be settled on a starter. It could be Solomon. It could be someone else. Whichever quarterback it is, he'll pass for 3,000 yards. With Nate Phillips, Austin Hill, Cayleb Jones and Davonte' Neal (among others), he'll have targets downfield who are more than capable of turning the passer into a 3,000-yard guy.

If the buzz is correct, Anu isn't a big time runner, so that should cut down on contact. The QB's who have had an issue in RR's system are guys like Denard, who were running a ton. Anu's success can be complete just by spreading the ball around and running often enough to make the D honor it.

You are no doubt correct, I just recall a report from fall camp (from Ang?) that said RR blew a gasket when Anu went east/west towards the sidelines instead of norht/south.

Atleast for this first game, Anu might play alittle too fast, sometimes. He gets the ball off quick, but when the timing is off with the receivers, you get some errant throws.
