My hope is they’ve already got a deal in place for a guy like Chris Hampton (co-DC at Oregon) or Erik Chinander (DC at Boise State) but obviously can’t announce it until their seasons are over.
Talked to someone who could/should have known yesterday and fwiw he hadn't heard that it was for certain going to be Gonzalez (tho acknowledged the rumor). He also didn't know why, such that it is Gonzalez, Arizona wouldn't have already announced it.
The only thing that makes sense is they're still waiting on someone who is still coaching.

My son did some looking and found out Johnny Nansen is co defensive coordinator and the other coordinator is the head guy. Nansen left Arizona before Fisch quit and the rumors were that Akina and Nansen did not care for that man. It also turns out that Nansen and Brennan are very good friends. Although Nansen makes more money there but not outlandishly more. Its not really a quantum leap that he might come back here, maybe half a quantum. Just spit balling here.

$900K at Texas, and Akina made $785K, so definitely in the realm and can't argue with being the sole DC.

Getting Salave'a back home to Tucson is quite a coup in my opinion. He coached some great players and teams at Oregon and Miami. He can also help open and keep Polynesian pipelines coming to Tucson. Honestly, I'm surprised Salave'a's name hasn't come up for some mid-major head coach openings, and he's agreed to come back to Tucson as an assistant.

Now this is a Tomey legacy I can get behind. Seems quite the demotion though, from AHC to a position coach.

This is from a Miami insider guy at 247.
Things were trending this way for quite some time. When Miami hired Devin Santana to assist on the defensive line last summer after analysts were cleared to coach on the field, my understanding was that he was higher up the coaching food chain than Salave’a was. Also, not that it really mattered with analysts able to coach, but my understanding was that Ed Pata was actually the 10th official “on-field assistant” during the 2024 season. These are dicey things to discuss in real time but just wanted to shed some light on that situation from my perspective.

David Kelly said he was hired as AHC and DL coach.

Is JS a DL coach only or an AHC also?

Also, Hansen was on Steve Rivera's show today. He said Babers mailed it in and was just like Sumlin, i.e. a guy with a buyout just collecting a check. Also complained about his 20 year old scheme.
Surprised Hansen called Babers out like that.
Also mentioned that CBB fired a DL coach who had been with him for 6 or 7 years.

That's why I tend to not like hiring head coaches who have been fired. They found out that it's much easier to not work and get paid than it is to work and get paid. Felt RichRod was kind of like that too. Seriously, having your drinking buddy and OC Mike Canales not having to recruit?

Hansen mentioned that also.
Told a story of seeing Casteel in the airport and he was cussing up a storm about having to go to Fresno to recruit.

Seumalo seemed to be a nice laid back guy but never appeared to show the passion I would prefer from a coach. Glad he is out.
Hopefully the DL recruiting improves between now and fall because we are still very thin there. Also not sure how many of these FCS players are going to make the jump to D1 smoothly? Hopefully at least half can make the transition without much of a drop in production as Brennan and Co are loading up on em.

Weird they can recruit at this level (whatever level that is) with kids not knowing who their position coach might be.
I think that Oglesby is a coach that might be gone on the offensive side. I also wonder about Adkins as a TE coach given in a spread you usually don’t see those guys play much. Wade hasn’t thrilled me either but it was his first full year as a position coach

I was wondering how we are doing so I checked 247 for ranking in the Big 12:
Recruits: 12th
Transfers: 6th
Overall: 14th
The overall rankings doesn't make sense to me but the transfer rank is pretty good. We are 59th nationwide. The highest ranked team in the Big 12 is Colorado

You caught me, I did fall for false agendas and narratives where I thought that decisions and results were made by the coaches and the players and to a lesser extent the AD. I should have known that all that is really determined by "good fans" showing up to games and being blindly loyal.

Arizona hires Josh Miller as tight end coach
Arizona has completed its offensive coaching staff hires as Southern Miss tight ends coach Josh Miller is headed to Arizona. Miller was actually hired to the Southern Miss football staff as the tight ends coach in January of 2025, so he had yet to coach a game.
He came to Southern Miss after spending the previous season at Marshall with Arizona offensive coordinator Seth Doege. He also worked as an offensive analyst at Purdue with Doege for the 2023 campaign after working as offensive coordinator at Midwestern State in 2022, where he was also in charge of the quarterbacks.

I was wondering why the UA was using one of their coaching positions for tight ends, when Marshall only used one TE and 3 WRs, but looking it up, in June 2024 the NCAA removed the restrictions on number of coaches. Can the UA finally get a dedicated ST coach?
