Game meat pie

The menu advised, "may contain pieces of shot." I suspect that was just to make one feel more manful.

A san. The roll is rubbed with fresh tomato; then comes a layer of brava sauce, a safety-orange-colored aioli spiked with hot paprika and sherry vinegar. A pile of ribbons of paper-thin Serrano ham, a mound of arugula, then a spoonful of sweet, caramelized onion.

What does that entail now? 20 question test and a quick drive with an instructor? 3 point turn?

There go your insurance rates...

Written test to get his learners permit. Now he gets to learn to drive then go back and take the driver portion of the test. Then my rates go up.

Why aren't tamales everywhere? Should be the world's most available, hot and ready take-out option. You should be able just to hold out your hand and get a tamale.

They are rather labor intensive to make. There's a reason they're only made by groups of 30 family members brought in from all around the country only at Christmas time.

But they're always embarrassingly cheap, and you can even buy dozens at a time right at the Sky Harbor El Bravo right before you board your plane. So they can't be that impossible to make. They should make them more expensive to compensate the people who make them, and render them available everywhere, all the time.

So, what is the secret?

I think you may have found the answer Longhorned.

I call it the "Richard Cranium Last Of Sandwich".

The last of the ham that a friend gave me from the pig he grew, butchered, and smoked on his little farm in Gippsland.
The last of the home grown lettuce.
The last of the home grown spanish onion.
The last of the bottle of Dijon Mustard.
The last of the bottle of Japanese Mayonaise.

Its not the last of the bread loaf, and its not homemade, but it is from a very nice bakery just down the street.

Unfortunately the last of the home grown tomatoes were used up weeks ago, so I had to make do with crappy, tough skinned, market tomatoes. Even the green grocer can't get decent tomatoes at this time of year.

So a very nice sandwich indeed.

I might have a piece of apple pie I baked last night just to make up for the lousy tomato.

Schwartz's in Montreal: smoked meat sandwich, medium fat, with fries, sour pickle, and a black cherry soda. My 16-month old daughter had the same.

"You shouldn't have your baby eat like that," objected the waiter.

"She's fine," I said. "All that fatty meat is only a problem for fat men like you and me."

Chinese buffet. Guilty pleasure. Can't get enough of those crab rangoons.

Also (probably belongs in the random thoughts thread), if there were Mexican buffets would Chinese folks show up in droves like Mexican folks show up to the Chinese buffet; i.e., would there be cultural reciprocity in this regard? Which leads to a more fundamental and important lunch question, why aren't there any Mexican buffets?

Gordo's used to have one, and of course Pancho's. There's one at Rigo's on 4th Ave.

When I was at the U we did Gordo's buffet once. Too much Mexican is painful.

How dare you bring up Gordo's! We used to eat there every week and their green/red chile was incredible. I wonder where all those orange trays ended up

Loved Gordos chimichangas. Also, nothing was better as a kid than eating at Pancho's and hoisting the Mexican flag at your table for the waitress to deliver more fresh tortillas!

No. See Jewish Christmas in Chinese restaurants. When Chinese people show up at delis for Hanukkah, Mel Brooks laughs at them behind 2-way mirrors.

Too messy. The best buffet foods are those that are already totally loose (think of all the sauced items in an Indian buffet) or in non-sauced tight packages (egg rolls, fried mozzarella, samosas).

Mexican food features a bunch of stuff that is loosely packaged and easily falls apart. Imagine trying to pick up a soft taco with tongs or the number of soggy burritos that would be torn in the middle of the tortilla. Buffet foods are all about transportability.

I appreciate the time taken to consider the matter fellas. Are not, however, the mini-chimi, taquito, flauta and even a buffet pan of melted-together slices of quesadilla the worthy South of the Border equivalents of the egg roll, pot sticker, dumpling or samosa? Is a spatula laden with cheesy saucy enchiladas really any different than a healthy scoop of that risky, yet oddly tasty, krab/seafood casserole? Add to this a build-your-own taco/burrito bar with your choice of tortillas, pans of various Mexican meat fillings, rice and beans, all the fixins and condiments. We all know how to stuff and scoop and eat by hand with tortillas just as you're expected to do with your naan, rice and vindaloo. I see no reason why the Mexican buffet shouldn't dominate the all-you-can-eat market.
