Trevor was the one who already said he was gone. The other hasn’t made up his mind yet but he’s a starter on the OL.
Re: 2018 Arizona Wildcats football team
I always found it strange that Wood came here, considering RR's history with the TE. We knew Wood wanted to be involved in the offense and it (unsurprisingly) never really materialized.
Re: 2018 Arizona Wildcats football team
I should have guessed Trevor. That should have been more obvious. Best of luck to Trev.
Re: 2018 Arizona Wildcats football team
Thanks RR, I stood up for you and truly believed 2018 was your year. Egg on my face and hating the taste of crow. Hope it was worth it!!Gilbertcat wrote:2018: The year that could have been
Not sure AZ will ever be good/relevant in CFB. The tide is falling with less kids playing football and less folks watching the sport. Shoot, the Pac12 doesn't look like it will be able to stay in the P5 much longer with the disparity between conference $$$.
Well, my last CFB hope is that Herm stinks it up in Tempe. Sad that this really all we have to look forward to.

Shea Patterson lol
Re: 2018 Arizona Wildcats football team
I am seeing a lot of Pac 12 players declaring early... Good news.
Re: 2018 Arizona Wildcats football team
Not the starter on the OL Chief referred to, but another one. Not worried about that one. By my count we've lost Wood, Griffin, Tharpe and Rutt.
Edit: Not worried about "that" one, as in Rutt.

Rutt was a surprise. Yes, not the OL starter who is 50/50 on leaving.

Wood being a legacy recruit hurts a bit, but all of them are completely replaceable.

I believe this is Colin's dad. Considering transferring?

Chill, dude. It's been a week since RR was cut loose. It was six weeks from the time Stoops was cut loose until RR was hired. Names come up and rumors float all over during coaching searches. Don't sweat anything until a hire is announced.btfd16 wrote:This can be disastrous. I am so far off the Heeke train. This has all the makings of a potential shit storm.

I'm not getting too excited about this.....yet. The Schooler at Oregon has gone through 2 coaching changes at Oregon in his two years and hasn't transferred.

Lots of people who don't know jack shit are seeing a few people pissed and have decided to join the bandwagon. I can promise 90% of the people upset haven't watched a Navy football game nor understand that the Triple Option is not what he will run here.
I've watched Navy a lot because I follow AAC football. They are so well coached it is disgusting. They do all the right things, the play calling, situational awareness, and decision making is absolutely elite. And no it isn't because they run the Triple Option or a disciplined service academy. They are just crazy well coached team.
I wanted Sumlin but it appears he wasn't convinced he could win here despite us coming up with the money. Arizona isn't a desirable job, just face it. Would you want to coach at a place that has no money and half empty stadiums in the second half? Go to games around the country. Arizona football just sucks compared to other stadiums and places you walk into.
I strongly believe the Ken N is by far the best that we could have done.

Such a strong take you had to post it in two different threads?

If he is indeed the hire, I'm not sure he's the best we could have done. I don't think its the end of the world either. A lot will depend on who he brings in as assistant coaches and coordinators. For any number of reasons there is a certain amount of risk with any new hire but there may be a bit more risk with him because he's never coached at this level and we just don't know. On the other hand me and a lot of others thought RichRod was a great hire and a homerun but he certainly wasn't. I think coaching at a Military academy is a lot different because the athlete he's coaching is a lot different. Most people do not totally understand their commitment to excellence and the pressure they put themselves under for four years. Its not for the faint of heart and little boys in short pants. For that reason they may be a bit easier to coach. I am trying to keep an open mind here and right now I just want this process done.

Who's the new offensive staff?
It's imperative that we get someone extremely competent, or we'll lose Tate. He went here to play QB. A QB in a triple-option is a RB.

Arizona faces BYU, Houston, Souther Utah, and Oregon State. It is very realistic to start 4-0. Then Arizona will face USC at home. If Arizona is 4-0 , I fully expect a near sell out crowd.tgrumpy2 wrote:Hey I'm ecstatic as well but come on, Chill guys. LOL

Is he eligible immediately? Never appeared in a game.
Re: 2018 Arizona Wildcats football team
So with that said, how do we shape up next year. Still a bare empty cupboard, especially on defense, for Sumlin to work with with a moderately challenging schedule. Worst case 4-8 best case 9-3 kinda year I'd think. A 7-5 type campaign wouldn't surprise me and would be totally fine for year 1 if the recruiting picks up for 2019.

Re: 2018 Arizona Wildcats football team
We won't be bad, but that's a pretty crazy stretch. We still have a bare cupboard on defense and no depth pretty much anywhere on the team. Any injuries at all will fatally cripple us just like they have for 3 years now.ramcat wrote:Think the Cats win the South.

Friekh was the OL starter I was referring to about transferring. He was 50/50 and his RR comments were funny yet unnecessary. So, I thought I’d let that outta the bag for you since he can’t get over the RR firing.

Re: 2018 Arizona Wildcats football team
The wording in that quote made me laugh.....A coach of Sumlin's ability also can change that rather easily, especially since Rich Rod didn't leave the cupboard bare.

Anyone know what happened at Notre Dame? 4 people dismissed. Any worth taking a look at depending on what led to the dismissal?

It’s so damned obvious to everyone but some delusional Scummies. Bear Down Coach Sumlin! As far as recruiting goes, there has to be a renewed recruiting emphasis in California and Texas. In-state, let's just say as long as Sumlin is at Arizona and Herm Edwards is at Arizona State, it's advantage Wildcats.

Re: 2018 Arizona Wildcats football team
I'd prefer Sumlin over Herm, no doubt. That said, I find it interesting how quickly you all are anointing Sumlin as a sure fire home run. How often does a coach fired from a better program meet expectations at the next job? Sumlin had a staff of ace recruiters at A&M, most of which will not be joining him in Tucson. While I have little doubt that Sumlin will elevate recruiting, what has Sumlin done to make you think he can develop or even capitalize on said talent? Sumlin had like 3 top 10 recruiting classes at A&M. With all that talent on the roster this year, he blew a huge lead and lost to UCLA (a team RR beat with much less talent), and was tied in the 4th qtr against Nicholls State.Chicat wrote:It's obvious to them too. The reality is, there were several jobs open, many of which Sumlin made a play for. He was never seriously considered for any of them until UA. Perhaps because of the reasons I list above? Or perhaps because at one point Sumlin was leading a program that was tied with Oklahoma at for most players arrested in all of NCAA.
So yes, Sumlin is a better hire than Herm Edwards, but that isn't saying much. Just about anyone would have been a better hire than Herm Edwards. As pointed out in other threads, I like many ASU folks wanted nothing to do with Sumlin... until the reality of who we were hiring hit us in the face. So did UA make a better hire than ASU? Yes. Did UA hire a good coach? Not so sure about that. While there is one Sumlin aggie fan boy here, I would advise you go look through the archive at Texags to get a feel for what A&M fans really think of Sumlin. There is a reason he is not there now, and that they wanted him gone awhile ago.

They did FAR better in the SEC West than I expected them to. The shit & harassment that Sumlin dealt with this offseason was unconscionable and HAD to be a factor that effected him and the team this year. And it also may have given him pause to move into a program that fanatical ever again if he has success here.
There are ZERO guarantees of success when hiring a coach. But there is not a coach we could have had a realistic shot at that I would prefer.
As for the conference changes this offseason, Chip Kelly might be a better coach... but I appreciate having someone at the helm that I actually like.
Re: 2018 Arizona Wildcats football team
Charlie Strong is the easiest example from last year. Could count Kiffin as well if you want. Orgeron was fired by USC (not retained--semantics), but was ok at LSU this year and should be better next year. Bobby Petrino has been good since returning to Louisville, if you want a multi year example.Scummy Dick Douglas wrote:I'd prefer Sumlin over Herm, no doubt.
