That's equable. They are on the road and we are on the road. As fair as it is going to get.

If they’re vaxxed, let them play. Stop acting like these rapid tests are conclusive of anything.

Re: The 2021-2022 Season Thread
It's not about some athletes or citizens getting the virus. It's about our almost failing healthcare system!
19 states have fewer than 15% of ICU beds left as health care staffing shortages complicate care
(CNN)As a record number of Americans are infected with Covid-19, largely due to the rapidly spreading Omicron variant, some states' health care systems are beset with nearly full intensive care units.
Nineteen states have less than 15% remaining capacity in their ICUs.
Four of them have less than 10%: Kentucky, Alabama, Indiana and New Hampshire, according to data Wednesday from the US Department of Health and Human Services.
The other states are: Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas and Vermont, according to HHS.
Nationally, the number of people hospitalized in the US with Covid-19 has reached a record high -- 151,261 as of Wednesday. And as infection spreads, states and health care systems nationwide are handling shortages of available medical workers, who face a greater chance of Covid-19 exposure and must isolate after testing positive.
https://www.cnn.com/2022/01/13/health/u ... index.html
And, from NPR this morning"
STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:
The United States has hit a new pandemic record. There are now more people hospitalized with COVID-19 than at any other point in the pandemic. If you doubt this, visit an emergency room. NPR's Will Stone reports.
WILL STONE, BYLINE: America's astronomical number of infections can feel abstract. But in emergency rooms, they are concrete - excruciating wait times, patients filling the waiting rooms, unable to get a bed.
GABE KELEN: This is about as bad as I can recall in my lifetime.
STONE: That's Dr. Gabe Kelen, chair of emergency medicine at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.
KELEN: The emergency departments are, like, the one open venue for everybody, and we are being absolutely crushed.
STONE: They're putting patients outside in tents or keeping them in the hallways, wherever they can find space. Maryland is in especially bad shape, but it's a similar picture all over the country, including in Tucson, Ariz., where ER doctor Bradley Dreifuss works.
BRADLEY DREIFUSS: Literally, there are patients in our emergency department who have been there for over 200 hours waiting for a placement.
STONE: That is, they're on a gurney in the hallway, waiting for an actual hospital bed. Problem is there are none.
DREIFUSS: Our hospitals are totally full. We're not able to admit patients. We don't even have admitting teams currently. We are not able to get patients where they need to be because our system is literally collapsing.
STONE: Dreifuss is seeing the fallout firsthand - patients leaving the ER only to come back later even more sick.

However, in New Mexico 15-20 percent of those being hospitalized for COVID are vaccinated - I haven't heard the data for Arizona.
Proportionately, unvaccinated are being infected and hospitalized at a far greater rate, but that 15-20% is a significant part of the impact now during Omicron surge...

Cal Poly (my former employer) is requiring everyone (fac/staff/students) to get boosters.
https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/coronav ... e/2719975/
Pfizer and its partner BioNTech said that while two doses may not be protective enough to prevent infection, lab tests showed a booster increased by 25-fold people's levels of virus-fighting antibodies.

I mean, in reality, he isn't the kind of player who meaningfully changes Lloyd or the program's trajectory. I just think he's going to be a pretty solid multiyear guy, and it sucks watching those guys vs Arizona when they used to be committed here.
Of course, I had to be up early for work, so I didn't watch it and this is all box score based.

Simpson was really good in the first half. He was slicing us up.
I thought it was a mistake not to start him in the second half. He came in fairly quickly but you could tell it took him a few possessions to ramp back up his energy and by then we were up double digits. Credit to Lloyd and the boys for playing him much tougher the last 20 minutes too. Didn’t let him get a clean look.

Re: The 2021-2022 Season Thread
I said this when I was talking about how I thought he'd be more efficient on a stronger roster. Colorado doesn't have a lot of dynamic perimeter guys like we do so he who must not be named winds up having to shoulder more of the load to make things happen than you hope a freshman would have to.Chicat wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 7:20 am Simpson was really good in the first half. Again, didn't watch the game, but Colorado just has an issue where it's easy to focus in on whoever gets it going because you can do it without worrying someone else is dangerous and will make you pay.

Being an AZ fan I am always ready for something bad to happen....
Our 8 man rotation is set in stone and I am assuming Aiken is done... but if we happen to lose anyone for a period of time... do we think Bal or Nowell could give us any minutes to fill in any possible gaps?

I tend to agree with Eebs the best case would be Nowell stepping in for Mathurin, Terry or Larsson. I prefer Nowell because he's more physically advanced and I trust his D a little more as a result.
For that sort of emergency patch, I always prefer D. It's easier to ask a spot player to defend and rebound and just take what he's given on offense. Run plays for your better guys and hope the spot player shoots nothing but ORB layups, wide open J's or layups off a cut. Ask them to produce on D.
It's hard to gauge on their amount of time, but Nowell is a pure wing with a decent motor and body, so I hope he could step in for 10-12 minutes of solid D. Bal is just not as physically there.

Looking ahead, here are our remaining reg season games (predicted wins in bold):
Utah
@Stanford
@Cal
@UCLA
ASU
UCLA
USC
@WSU
@UW
OSU
Oregon
@Utah
@Colorado
Stanford
Cal
This doesn't include postponed games vs. USC and ASU. Not sure those will get played.
It would be pretty crazy to get through the entire Pac schedule with one loss, but avoiding road games @USC and @Oregon makes this a very real possibility. Knowing AZ, we'll probably get an unexpected loss on the road somewhere. Maybe Stanford or Colorado.

Our team just looks hungry and dialed in. They have lapses because, well, they're all like 19 or 20 years old. But the ceiling is high for this team. I think the second half of that Illinois game was a glimpse of this team at its best. I'm not in love with the 17, 21 and 16 turnovers in those 3 games. The biggest positive is we've hit decent rebound margins vs UW and Colorado after a few meh efforts there, but consistently being above 15 turnovers is less than ideal.Beachcat97 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 12:52 pmOur team just looks hungry and dialed in. We don't anything to do with Duke. The refs are going to treat the Duke players like bears in a National Park come tournament time. Our style of play is going to lead to more TOs than we are used to.
Also, these guys are all underclassmen, except CLo and Kier.
I’d like us to be closer to 15 but at this point I don’t know how much better they will get.
