Just checked out the fire's location. I was wondering where you lived as we drove up Hwy 21 to Idaho City recently. At day's end we went to Guido's for pizza, and Google took us off Warm Springs (our old route) through the Parkcenter corridor. It's damn handsome, the growth and quality of the area. It looked like a new Boulder CO suburb full of families and well designed enclave neighborhoods. It Did Not look like Trumptown. East Boise and its foothills, or the north Boise same, or absolute downtown were our fantasies back in the day when we considered moving there. It's a fine city with a great future.

I live in the neighborhood at Parkcenter and Warm Springs. It's called Dallas Harris Ranch. You probably drove right by our neighborhood

We were talking about Harris Ranch as we drove through the area because my wife thought that she remembered some planning issue with it that delayed its development back when it was first proposed to be sold. This might have been anytime between the late 90s to the early 2000s. It seemed like a perfect part of Boise to be in. I'm proud for ya man, that's a great location.

Well, the crazy weather just hit my town!!

5.65" one-day rain total set an all-time record (Previous Record, 5.65" in 1901) - 6.47" at my house. I, and my neighborhood, are OK.

Rescue operations still underway - most dangerous flooding over, but extremely high runoff continues. More storms predicted for tonite...

I am preparing for a Nor'easter blizzard that is supposed to hit Jan 9th in New England. I will definitely keep an eye on the weather. It is going to turn very cold afterwards. I need to plan accordingly. I live under 2 miles from the hospital and may need to stay there for awhile. It might be a good time to receive a lot of overtime. However, they need to set up a place where we can sleep and relax when we are not working. I will bring my Nintendo Switch with me.

This is the most insanely warm winter I've ever seen. We're going to hit at least mid January with like 3 times as many days with temps still in the 80s as days below 70 degrees. We're just skipping winter this year

If Winter doesn't get here soon the Southwest might be staring at it's worst fire season ever for the mountain areas. Already fires on the Rim in December. After the Summer heatwave we had with below average moisture content we really needed another good winter(I knew we were due for a winter like this one though). Getting 3 good winters consecutively will never happen again here.

What is live in the Central Coast December rainfall had been 0.11" for the month. I have been waiting for the rainy season to put in some sod. Guess I will just house water it.

2nd year in a row no snow in the Midwest and we may have to cancel our annual snowmobile trip again.

All those northern Wisconsin voters who think climate change is a hoax are going to be looking for different jobs in about a month.

My 3.5 year old is so excited for our trip to visit my wife's family in west central Wisconsin next week. She's been ecstatic to play in the snow. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there will be any. It'll be very cold, but no snow.

Polar vortex 2025: Extremely cold temperatures headed to the eastern US

The first blast of bitter cold hits the Northern Plains and the Midwest on Wednesday and Thursday and then reaches the Northeast by the end of this week.

The surge of arctic air will likely be the start of multiple back-to-back cold blasts lasting throughout much of January, unleashing freezing temperatures across a large swath of the country.

Image

Temperatures will likely be below average throughout most of January for the eastern half of the U.S., especially the East Coast.

I feel for ya being that I grew up in Michigan, along with a segment in Poughkeepsie NY, so won't mention getting up to 76 today in the Central Coast.

But seriously, how can you keep your house warm when it gets that cold? I had a coworker one time go to Chicago to see his kids one winter, and he said that the furnace never stopped running.

My dad grew up on a farm in Indiana. No central heat, and as the oldest son it was his job to fire up the kitchen stove in the morning.

He said that if there was a pot of water on the stove, it would have a layer of ice on it by morning. They used bedwarmers with coal to heat up their beds at night.

No indoor plumbing either. Just a hand pump in the kitchen.

My dad with one of his sisters in 1945. Thing to note is the big windows to let light in with no electricity. And obviously not energy efficient. Both dad and his sister are still with us. Farm was around when I was a kid, but now long gone as with most family farms.

Also on the farm, my dad's uncles returning after the war.

Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger, apparently.

Digressing here, but we are losing a lot of history with the passing generations. Both of my parents grew up dirt poor during the depression, and so did my mother-in-law. Along with living through WW2 with the rationing.

Things kids today don't realize how people lived.

Same here, Merk. My father talked about a childhood during which he saw an apple once a year, at Christmas. His Daddy was a dry-land sharecropper. All the siblings picked cotton. Children were assets. They grew up hard, fast, and left the farm as soon as possible.

* By the way, that's a brick house in your pic. Pretty highfalutin digs there.

Yeah it's crazy. Everyone on my dad's side grew up dirt poor in southeast Kansas. My dad's uncle was killed by a combine when he was 9 years old in the 30s.
