Bear Down. Feel for UCSB. They played well enough to win a lot of regionals, but we played that much better. Tip of the cap to the Gauchos. Now, on to the Supers!

When the brackets were announced, lots of “experts” said this was one of the toughest regionals. Lots of them picked anybody but us to come out of the regional. Lots of them said our pitching was too suspect. Not a lot of people thought we could get out of the regional.
I have either watched a stream, or listened on the radio or both to pretty much every game, and the one thing the “experts” didn’t get is how tough this team is. No, they don’t play perfect, but they do not quit. Somebody steps up. Big kudos to the pitching staff for how they handled UCSB in two games.
I have no idea if they can beat whoever they end up playing out of Ole Miss (really? Does every sport need to play them this year?) or Southern Miss, but I do know it would be foolish to count them out.

Watching the drama happening in the other regionals the Cats quietly went about their business. Got to hand it to our pitching staff for 3 outstanding performances along with our defense.
Everybody talks about our stacked offense but we all know that pitching and defense ultimately wins tournament games where the opponents are stronger.

Absolutely right here. UCSB is a strong offensive team. For reference, they scored 27 runs in 2 games against Okie St this weekend and 2(!) runs in 2 games against us. I'm not sure how strong Okie St's pitching is but that's remarkable and was especially needed on a weekend when our top hitters were struggling.

2 walks all weekend is a crazy good stat. Yesky’s influence is really being seen right now. The line up changes (SS and LF) has shored up our defense as well.
If we keep hitting and turning in quality starts this team will be a very tough out. Play the winner of Ole Miss and Southern Miss today. The Rebels are the 12 seed.
Speaking of Yesky, his old team Oregon St will play Dallas Baptist for their regional crown. UCLA and ASU were eliminated and Oregon and Stanford have regional final games at home today

I think 2016 was even more impressive than 2012 (more of a surprise) and as close as you can possibly get to the same outcome, without the same outcome of course. In Jay Johnson's first year we finished 16-14 in conference (tied for 3rd) and were sent to Lafayette where we knocked off the host team, knocked off 6th overall seed Miss St in the super regionals, and knocked of #3 overall seed Miami in the CWS (along with UCSB and Okie St) en route to the championship series.
In the championship series, we beat Coastal Carolina in Game 1 and lost to them in Game 2. The rubber match came down to the last pitch. Down 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th. With runners on 2nd & 3rd, 2 outs and full count, Ryan Haug ended the game by missing on the 3rd strike. It was a crazy nail biter.

With a bad call at home on the tieing run that ultimately made the NCAA go to instant replay.

This team top to bottom including coaching, talent, etc...looks better than the 2016 team frankly.
Need some breaks though to win it all and the 2016 team had that going for them until that last game which I thought a bad call screwed us.

One of the things I like the most about Coach Johnson’s teams is that they never seem to tighten up in a big moment. They all look like they are enjoying the hell out of their experience, so nothing ever seems too big for them. I’m sure I’m not explaining that right, but it just seems like he has a great culture going on along with the skills, development, etc. He’s brought in so many likable guys, and that makes it fun.

IIRC, they got the benefit of a bad call at first that lead to a scoring rally, too. It wasn’t Don Denkinger obvious, but the guy was out.

So, Ole Miss and Southern Miss are in a rain delay, with the winner today coming to Hi Corbett for the Super Regional.
Meanwhile, by seeding, it's:
1. Arkansas (vs. Nebraska)
2. Texas
3. Tennessee
4. Vanderbilt
5. Arizona
6. TCU (Lost)
7. Mississippi St (vs. Campbell)
8. Texas Tech
9. Stanford (vs. UC Irvine)
10. Notre Dame
After 6-seed TCU lost, I thought I saw something that said 10-seed Notre Dame was hosting a Super Regional, which I would assume means 9-seed Stanford will not. If that's true, I don't understand it, unless the SEC (excuse me...NCAA) arbitrarily re-seeds after the Regionals, doesn't want another Pac-12 school hosting Supers, or just doesn't want to wait for the results of the games today.

The thing that was most overlooked in 2016 was that game 3 was postponed a day, allowing Coastal to throw their ace instead of the last guys out of their bullpen. That may have been the biggest impact of all

Because of COVID, this year’s Super Regionals has to come out of the list of 16 approved sites that hosted regionals. The top 8 were automatically supposed to host Supers, so you may end up with games being played at neutral sites , for example TCU. So, unless they change what they laid out in March, which totally influenced the bids, the top 8 should be hosting, whether they’re playing or not.
But this IS the NCAA we’re dealing with.

I forgot about that. That was huge. Their ace led the NCAA in wins and had a 1.91 ERA.
Also of note, our final batter who struck out, Ryan Haug, was our backup catcher who was inserted in the 7th inning after our starting catcher took a bat to the head. Dude was at the plate as a fill-in when the every kid's dream scenario played out "bottom of the ninth, 2 out ...". It was only his 5th at bat of the whole CWS.

Sure looking like it will be Ole Miss as they are leading 9-0 but it’s still early.
Oregon St is sitting pretty to advance leading 5-0. Will be interesting if they send them to TCU if Old Dominion can’t get past UVA. Both National seeds would be out. They could go to Gonzaga who was chosen as a top 20 site or maybe Oregon if they don’t get through. Hopefully these 3 PAC schools get through to the super regionals giving us 4 of the 16
