I am an environmental/transportation planner for a local, woman owned, consulting company. I work on a range of topics from state transportation National Environmental Protection Act documentation, roadway access studies, road safety studies, to more city specific planning projects. A few city specific projects include: pedestrian and bicycle plans, transportation plans, and zoning ordinances. The company has done work state wide but is looking to spread into the surrounding states for additional planning work.

A Bloomberg article said the following a few years ago after the Caesars bond guaranty release fiasco, that is a far more accurate description:

"The entire edifice of modern financial capitalism is built on 100-page documents drafted by exhausted 26-year-olds and read by nobody. The reason disputes like this always bring out people talking about how important it is to dig deep into the documents is that nobody ever does."

They got everything right except for the fact that the documents we draft are more like 200-300 pages long.

I know in Chicago it does. If you have city contracts of any sort, you have to look at women-owned or minority-owned subcontractors first.

My 2nd job is that I am King of my Household.

Basically it involves my kids not paying any attention to anything I say and my wife getting pissed at everything I do.

It doesn't pay well but at least it's utterly unrewarding.

Can I asked what you used to do, Mr. EOCT? I suspect there's a reason in your professional past for why everyone wants you to serve on a board. If I had the time, ain't nobody want me serving on no board.

I work for a for-profit Charter school system. My official title is "Technology Integration Specialist", which theoretically means I develop and present trainings for teachers to help them better use education technology. I do quite a bit of that, but I'm also developing a CTE class for students, do handyman work at our schools, substitute teach...

I'm actually hoping to move out of the education field altogether in the next couple of years. It's better now that I'm not an administrator and have to worry significantly less about harebrained schemes like standardized testing, but the pay is still lousy.

What do you mean by "handyman work"? Like, in the usual sense? If yes, is that something extra for extra pay? Or do you get called over to another school to fix some bookshelves in the library at 2:00 on a Wednesday after having spent that morning developing training sessions for educational technology?

By "Handyman work", I mean I used to do construction and have a nice set of power tools I know how to use. I wind up being the guy who has to hang whiteboards, fix minor building issues, build furniture... I don't really mind doing that, but it doesn't fit my job description and I don't get paid extra for it. The substitute teaching part is what really chaps my ass. There is one teacher who calls out sick frequently and she apparently doesn't believe in writing sub plans for the students.

Yes it does. It goes under the Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBE) [51% owned by women or minorities] certification for state and federal work . A good portion of state transportation projects require a % of the work to be done by a DBE firm. If it wasn't for the DBE status i know a few consulting firms that would not survive.

Nope. English. Last time I had to sub for her, we watched Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail. It was funny. She worked for the company two years ago and sexually harassed me before she quit and then was rehired, but that's a completely different story. All easier said than done, because without good tasty food or alcohol, where's the fun when you're working 70 hour weeks?

Yea. I'm squarely in this boat, and toddler twins with a full-time working mother don't help. Right now I'm trying a juice thing and it's fucking killing me.

Slightly worried about the direction of leadership at this point, so I figured I should throw this out there...

Made a move today:

Still teach part time, but:

Marketing Educator, Account Manager with Better Business Bureau.

Base pay is almost what I earned as a full time educator, plus commission/residuals, plus full benefits.

Newer region, so all upside, and I have an eye on their expansion toward Flagstaff in a few years that could find me back there, maybe running it.

If all goes well, I could make make double what I did as a full time educator, and I'll I'm doing it talking!
