College is definitely a more guaranteed income at this point. There are just way more spots than the NBA.

Shit man, if someone wanted to pay me $50k to play basketball at UA plus give me a free education I’d jump on it. Better than being in the G-league.
If Carter is picked 20th, he would make $3,658,800 his 1st year, $3,841,680 his 2nd year & $4,024,440 his 3rd year. I've heard we are offering CB around $1.5 million next year. Are you giving up over $2 million dollars to stay in college? I don't think many of us would make that deal
No one would make that deal unless they thought they could double it or close to that by staying one year and also give them the chance to earn that payday an extra 5 years by sticking in the league. It is always going to be about being around for that second deal.
.
What you post here Cat is self defeating. If it’s all about the 2nd contract, the 1st contract doesn’t matter, and coming back for a chance at doubling the 1st contract’s value makes zero sense.

Might as well get the clock started.

For 1st round picks only the 1st 2 seasons are guaranteed. Seasons 3 and 4 are team options and involved structured raises as a % of one’s prior salary. The “it’s all about the 2nd contract” theory is financially sound but when it comes from a college coach or fan it has a tinge of bias to it. That bias being something like, “stay and develop another season and your chances of getting a second contract improve significantly”.

I don’t believe there is any truth in that. And, there is obviously a ton of self serving.

When it comes to Bryant, leave aside what I have posted recently, and ask yourself this: how many projected top 20 1st round NBA picks for Arizona have come back for another season?

Who was the last one?

Miles Simon?
Rondae maybe?

Used Draft Express/Givony mock drafts as a proxy for projected top 20 pick. Went back several mocks before the actual draft (6/25/14) in case RHJ was mocked high and then dropped because he pulled out.

3/31
AG - #8
RHJ - NR

4/26
AG - #8
RHJ - NR

5/25
AG - #10
RHJ - NR

6/14
AG - #10
RHJ - NR

6/25
AG - #8
RHJ - NR

By that measure RHJ doesn’t appear to have been top 20. Gordon went #4 in the end (Wiggins, Parker, Embiid).

Athletic moved Bryant up to #9 in its latest mock.

If he has a guarantee from an actual team that is a no brainer. Not sure how these evaluations are changing other than some guys stating they are coming back and you move up a spot. These guys aren't trying out for teams yet are they? Interviewing?

SBNation just put out a mock draft with CB at 13 to the Hawks.

I cant talk about it/the specifics but I dont believe any of this is related to other players withdrawing or anything of the like. I am not in the room so I cant say for certain that what I posted is true, hence my “98% he is gone” or whatever it was, and while I will wait for ESPN to move him up to be 100% convinced, what ‘mo there has been so far sure seems to support what I heard and posted.

Though I am on an island with that info it appears so …

If he really wants all the experiences that come with playing another season at Arizona and is willing to put off hoops as a cutthroat isolating business-career (and the extra $$$ that would come with that) for a year in exchange.

At this point I have it that he is already fringing upon being the 10th pick or better (and that is 10 days old now and could have changed). So playing your way into the lottery is for all intensive purposes out. Even if that is off it is assured that even if he is picked 20th Arizona’s NIL won’t compete with his 1st year’s NBA salary. If he is good enough to play in the NBA that imv will manifest regardless or whether or not he goes to a “good” franchise or one that has a spot in its rotation for him early on, so; attempting to micromanage the draft is a fool’s errand.

But there are going to be a lot of external pressures to go for sure and the history of the world says that it’s really tough to say no.

His parents could insist the University underwrite a $5MM insurance policy. (Terms applied.) Do it or no go. With CB's personality of just being naturally great but not an alpha I can't see him sliding backwards, especially--should he stay--the prospects of his college team enhancing his and the entire teams stature.

If he never plays basketball again due to *any* injury, he gets the full amount.

However, I agree that it's time to revisit with the family, especially if there is a proven American 4* wing/guard that has been damn good waiting in the portal AND wants to come to Arizona for 1.25 Mil.

It could be this 4* player is all the team really needs.

1. I wish I had your optimism about finding a (any) replacement (proven, wants AZ, $1.25 mil)

2. I think the replacement we need most of all now are wings.

Fair enough. Last time I looked there were two wings in the portal that fit the bill but they may want $2Mil.

So you're right. There's that.

Dame Sarr may be worth every bit of $3mm given how much free pub---during the entire basketball season-- he's going to give that university.

I think you missed the part about staying in the league 5 years more. If Carter is in the lottery he should go. If not it is more of a gamble. I think we will see that with Terry and while I think he will stick it will be near the minimum. These are all personal decisions and I have no idea what Carter's personal / family issue are. My hope is Carter makes a decision that maximized his long term potential in the league and that there are no regrets 5-6 years down the road. Can he achieve that either way ....yes. Does one path contain more risk....I believe so if he is not in the lottery.

If he is going this high congratulations to another Wildcat in the league. I find this list a bit suspect and Carter is the only non double figure scorer on the entire list. There are certainly players rated after Carter that I think are at least as good if not better but Carter has tremendous potential. To call him 3 and D shows he is projecting a bit because right now he is 3 and not very good D.

Hope this is right because getting drafted this high allows time to develop. The team that is projected to draft him has a deficiency in scoring from the outside (except for 1 player) and has great defensive players to surround Carter with.

Givony update this am:

Carter Bryant: not in the top 15 picks.

Sort of.

Because he says to watch out for San Antonio, who have the 8th and 14th picks, and put going at #8 in play as possible (tho he predicted Jackucionis at the Spurs at 8 and Will Riley at 14).

I think if he goes lottery that is 100% based on potential. A lot will depend on his performance in the combine. There are certainly teams that need a 3 with an outside shot if they have no other pressing needs I could see them drafting potential. If you wanted a shooter and better ball handler (likely 1/2) they are certainly available and are predicted to go after Carter.

Hope the future opens up to him and that he gets whatever he wants.

What I heard and posted a couple weeks back fwiw came about long before any combine. So, while a great performance in the combine (be it measurables or on the court) could move him up in the eyes of someone not currently planning on picking him, the already quasi-top 10 pick info I posted is independent of all of that.

My worry for Carter is how strong is that commitment based on potential if another recruit is still available. I think Arizona had another player that got caught up in that and went to the second round. Player was Gilbert Arenas.

Looks like he put on about 5 pounds. Now just needs 15 more. Hope he turns out like one of the Thompson twins but with a shot. That will require significant improvement on the defensive end and the ability to drive in traffic but Carter has the ability to develop those skills.
