This is Az why are we acting like we should be the underdog to Stanford? Fact is were just better then everyone in the pac12. We expect to win every game or at least I do. Beardown and quit with the Stanford talk

Rawle Alkins (foot) will play vs. Stanford
Arizona will be at full strength in Palo Alto with first place on the line
@RKelapire Jan 19, 2018, 2:11pm PST
The Arizona Wildcats will be at full strength for Saturday’s first-place game against the Stanford Cardinal.
After missing Wednesday’s game at Cal with foot soreness,
Rawle Alkins is set to return in Palo Alto, reports Bruce Pascoe of the Arizona Daily Star.
“He had some soreness in his foot, which we knew could happen,” Arizona coach Sean Miller told Pascoe. “When you get it, it’s important that we deal with that in the short term in a smart way and give it a couple of days to calm down.
”Then I think you find out if it’s more serious or not. If the pain doesn’t subside, then maybe we have an issue that’s bigger that we thought
but it did subside and he’s all set.”

Now just you hold on right there. We didn't say we're
scared of Stanford. It's just that we're sophisticated enough to know it's hard to win on the road against a conference foe that's 4-1.

If you were paying attention last year, it was clear Haase had Stanford trending in the right direction. They played Arizona much better at McKale late in the season than they did when Maples. Stanford struggled in the non-conference because their top perimeter player Pickens was out with an ankle injury. Okpala was ineligible. Davis & Travis also missed time. Watching them now it's clear they've got some really nice players. Freshmen Davis, Okpala and da Silva are all long and skilled and certainly contributing more than our freshmen class excluding Ayton.
So yes, I'm concerned about them tomorrow. I think we're better and we should win. But if we don't play well, we could certainly go down. We're not gonna get any calls at Maples. Knowing Pac 12 officiating, Ayton is gonna be whistled for any contact while Stanford doubles & triple teams him and gets away with murder. It's going to be their best crowd of the season and will take a better than average performance by us to win.

Stanford is playing much better and more like what most people expected; I agree with zonagrad that its due mostly to finally being healthy.
Arizona is going to be tested inside and on the glass today, Alkins is going to be key in helping Arizona defend and rebound - he got the Popovich scratch on WED, hopefully he comes back energized this afternoon.
a win at Maples opens up a nice path for Arizona to the conf title.
huge game

Love it, 97!
Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Stanford plays a lick of zone. I haven't seen it, at least.
So the manliest men win. Go fight for rebounds, because Stanford is in position and going after them. And get the ball directly to Ayton in the post. Force the trees to make some hard choices.

Looks like they learned a zone to play against us.

One can hope, but not likely. He is projected to go in the first round with guaranteed money. One service even had/has him in the lottery. If he slips into the second round, he might/should come back. But I haven't read how strong next year's crop is rated. Good handlers seem to take that into consideration.

I’d be ok if the continued soreness didn’t throw a red flag up. Is this something we are going to have to deal with in March? We can’t make a FF without Alkins.

Jones fractures are no joke
I hope it’s just soft tissue issues but the boot at this stage is concerning.

I mean, if he's feeling soreness then just put him in the boot and give that tissue the day off. Not terribly concerning with negative x-rays - just the proper preventative measures.

They took X-rays when he complained of soreness last week before the Cal game. The X-rays were negative. The coaching staff sat him against Cal anyway, citing soreness. And now the same explanation for yesterday's game.

So what do you think of soreness keeping him out of 2 of 3 games, in spite of negative X-rays? Not knowing anything about that, I'm concerned.

Color me as not concerned. If anyone wants to point to Miller being hard headed and not changing his coaching style, I point to this as being one example of him adjusting. Miller dies to win every single game, check that, every single possession. I think years past he throws a player out there with some injury (DWill's finger, Ray Smith's knee in red/blue etc.) Currently, Miller is focused on one thing and it isn't a January game that everyone will forget in a week.

In addition to the March focus, Alkins has a potential NBA future. I fully support a coach caring about that. Jeopardizing Rawle's NBA future for this game would have been the exact opposite of the message Miller sends about this being a player's program.

People are concerned and rightfully so, based on our collective past as fans. We've seen seasons changed by injuries in January before. Miller is cognizant of that as well.

It is concerning that he has missed 2 out of the last 3 games, but watching him on the bench last night alleviated some concern. It didn't appear that he was wearing a boot and he was on his feet cheering on his teammates and jumping up on down after big plays. I'm hoping that's a sign that this really is just precautionary.

Soft tissue issues (swelling, pain, instability) can last 6 to 9 mo from DOI in foot fractures. Natural history is an ebb and flow in symptoms with progressive gradual resolution until they resolve.
Like spiff said it’s uncommon to be doing well and then all of a sudden have symptoms to the degree that you have to return to a walking boot. Generally once out of the boot, people are down with the boot. That being said this is probably precautionary and if he is having symptoms needed support I wouldn’t be surprised if he is held out another game or two. I’d start to be worried if this is a pattern heading into mid-late feb.

Miller -
"It's foot soreness..he doesn't have a stress reaction..with rest, he experiences more comfort". Might play tomorrow against Utah if there's zero pain.

Did you see how rusty he was when he came back earlier this season? Sit him that long and you set him back again.
Start Smith, have Rawle be 1st off the bench (replacing a big man most likely) and have him play fewer minutes to alleviate some of the soreness.
Assuming of course it is just soreness and not something worse.

Ask a specialist, but I don't know if extensive sitting will help with healing.

Ummm...I'm not advocating for sitting him until February, but Rawle's second game back he played 31 minutes, was 9/11 from the field, 3/3 from 3, had 5 boards, and 2 dimes. If that's rusty then he's the second coming when not rusty.

I'm refering over all, not to one particular game. He's looked pretty damn rusty, especially on offense, since he came back.
