"I'm outraged by many of the media's statements that were made, and the acceptance by the media that many of those statements were true."

I teared up on hearing this. Miller absolutely encapsulated my #1 complaint about ESPN, and the sports media's treatment of Arizona in general, since I became a Wildcat fan.

If you heard this brief press conference, you're ready to plow through a damn ocean wall for Sean Miller right now.

They already admitted the report was false. Notice how it's been changed from Ayton to "a recruit?"

I can see why that took a while. Much more substantive than I expected and sounded like a sworn affidavit with all the declarative "I did not" statements -- Miller's and U of A's lawyers would need time to crawl through each of those sentences.

Love it.

If ESPN retracts their story, they admit fault and open themselves up to litigation. Now the burden is on Miller and Ayton to prove libel. That's the only reason ESPN hasn't apologized.

Check out ESPN'S 30/30 on the Boston College gambling scandal. A young Leslie Viisser outed an innocent player and destroyed his career. There were no repercussions.

He also used language that basically mirrors the legal standard for libel of a public figure. That's a "shots fired" if I've ever seen it.

EXACTLY! ESPN HAS TO STAND BY THEIR STORY. Retracting it further shows that their sources were weak or non-credible. Another arrow for the plaintiff.

The problem is...

The CBB analysts relationship with CSM is effectively over. I'm sure NOW they believe Miller (would you believe him over the frustrated golfer?), but they are beholden to their employers and will not publicly say so.

What a freakin drama that has yet to play out. How will ESPN interview Miller going forward? In March? Covering the games? etc.?

The only link that may remain open is Goodman, because of his ties to Arizona, and also he didn't come out day 1 and say "he needs to be fired".

Fuck

Also, ESPN is standing by this reporting:

Someone told our reporter something.

Sure, that could be true. Now is it good journalism to print salacious and career ending allegations without evidence or confirmation? No - it's fucking not.

They aint in the game for good journalism, they are in for "reputation-making stories" for reporters, and eyeballs, add revenue, etc.

Q: WHY NOT WAIT A WEEK FOR THE YAHOO REPORT TO PLAY OUT?

Q: DO YOU REALLY THINK THEY JUST GOT THE INFO THAT DAY?

Maybe they did, and it was someone leaking that in order to DEFLECT from the Yahoo! article while taking down another big fish.

This is how it works folks. WAKE UP. Fuck

As it relates to the FBI/NCAA investigation moving forward, Miller just went all in. Such a public denial in such specificity can only mean he's supremely confident that whatever the FBI/NCAA has or will have will not touch him. If something is found that proves he lied just now, he will look like Rafael Palmero.

Great call. This is how to play it. Sadly, ESPN is still important in the CBB world, and recruits and players like the coverage.

I bet Bilas, Vitale, Greenberg, and even Gottlieb (who did a late night periscope to fanboy about the demise of Miller) do not bring up Miller for at least a year. We'll see
