Congrats!

The real challenge comes when you get home and say holy shit, how the hell do we do this? My only advice is to tell people to stay away for a week while you and your wife figure out your routine.

We've already set some pretty clear boundaries. One event per day. Limited time of an hour or two etc for visits. Luckily no crazy extended family lives close that can give us some unwanted opinions either.

Here's my 1 piece of unsolicited advice.

You've probably thought a great deal about things you are and aren't going to do to raise your daughter.

Just remember- reality will set in from time to time and you will not be able to live up to all of those personal expectations.

Cut yourself a break and pick your battles.... and your child will still become a great person.

Ah yes, good point Ari.

The number of rule of being a parent is: choose your battles, and make sure you win those battles.

Don't sweat the small stuff.

Yea definitely. There's an advantage to being an older parent and having my wife be as highly experienced and skilled in childcare. Sure we've done a shit load of research and have an ideal of what we want to do for almost every situation already, but I think we're pretty aware about what happens to battle plans once you enter combat, they never stay the same. Not to say there won't be plenty of ups and downs to come! We're a great team though so I feel pretty confident.

We told ourselves pre-kids that our children would never eat processed foods.

7,459 hot dogs and frozen chicken nuggets later, they’re fine and we are fine and no one gives a fuck what we promised ourselves before reality set in.

One week old today. We're settling in pretty good at home. So glad I have all this time off. She's nursing like a champ and we're (so far, all fingers and toes crossed) been getting good sleep. I doze between 9pm and 2am with a 11ish feeding while my wife sleeps. Then I sleep from about 2am-7am. Everything has been perfect!

We have one but haven't used it. She would be sleeping probably 4-5 hours straight easily except her pediatrician said she needs to be woken up every 2-3 to eat. Hoping this isn't just a sleep honeymoon period. Our friends have a 5 month old and he STILL rarely sleeps for more than an hour straight.

I have never in my life heard of waking a baby up to feed. Was I parenting wrong? Or is your pediatrician sadistic?

Their blood sugar can get too low the first few weeks if they're not eating that often with their small stomachs. She said the first 6-8 weeks. But we're waiting to see how she's doing with gaining weight at her appointment 2 weeks from today. If she's gaining weight and doing fine we'll probably just start letting her sleep as much as she wants at night. Of course I'm sure that's when she will suddenly decide she doesn't want to sleep for big chunks! It hasn't been a big deal so far though since my wife and I are still getting solid 5 hour blocks of sleep plus an hour or 2 of dozing and napping.

Time flying isn't something I've experienced yet as a parent. I'm stunned that I have a such a small child who completely depends on me, and says she "falled down" or "drawed you a picture, daddy." It seems like she was born 40 years ago instead of five.

Just surprised my kids with a visit to the Marvel Universe exhibit at the Museum of Science & Industry.

They had a blast, keep treating me like I am a hero, and I had a ton of fun too.

Sometimes being a parent is incredibly rewarding.

Don't do what my dad did to my 13 year-old sister.

Dad: What do you mean, "boyfriend"?! You're only 12 years old!

Sister: No, I'm 13 years old.

Dad: No you're not! You just turned 13, so you're only 12!

My 11 year old is on his 3rd girlfriend. And when we are anywhere in public he goes up and talks to random girls. Even groups of girls. Tries to get their Snapchat or TikTok. He once went missing during a travel soccer game because he was chatting up members of the opposing girls team.

He also likes to tell us that he has crushing social anxiety (which only seems to surface during boring family time).

So far I'm shocked at how good of a baby my kid is. She rarely cries, by 1 week old (she's 4 weeks tomorrow) we could depend on her sleeping 3 hours straight no problem. Since last week my wife stuffs her full between 7 and 8 pm then she sleeps almost without issue until 1 or 2 am. She eats again until about 3 then sleeps until 6 am or so. Basically has a schedule figured out already and sleeps in these 3-5 hour chunks at night without any fuss. I get a full 8 hours of sleep every night and my wife who is 100% breastfeeding is still able to get a 4-5 hour sleep and another 2ish hour nap. Then sometimes naps for an hour or 2 in the daytime.

The house is clean and tidy, laundry is done, and dinner made every night. I obviously know this is phase 1 of 392628 to come but it hasn't been anything nearly as exhausting or scary as everyone made it out to be. I'm sure I'll pay for it later though!

I couldn't be happier than I have been being home the last 4 weeks.

Yep, that's a cute one, for real and not just a thing to say.

I remember just standing against the wall holding and rocking mine for hours in the night while she cried mercilessly. I remember that loud shushed in the ear technique that only worked for about 4 seconds.

Hand-washing and sanitizing all the pumping paraphernalia was rough.

It wasn't until she was about 10 months old that I could't cook and clean with her.

I'm sure I might have a couple down in Mexico, but I digress...

I do a get a kick out of "rookie" parents as I was also so giddy and enjoyed how fun they were as infants.
Then they grow up...
