It's supposed to hit 112 in Portland this weekend. 90 on the Oregon coast. 100 or more in Seattle. Unreal.

Appreciate that POM. Seeing that a tornado missed us by literally 250 yards, even a weak one, is sobering as hell.

I echo everyone's sentiments J. Glad all are safe.

We had a tornado take out the big tree in our front yard when I was 3 or 4 living in Arlington Heights outside Chicago. There's two versions of the family story, one where my dad never got out of bed and my mom, sister, and I got to the basement and another where my dad didn't grab me and the two of us both stayed upstairs. We were very lucky there was no damage to the house or humans.

June 1966, right?

It struck early in the morning so that may be why your dad wasn’t particularly interested in getting out of bed.

Sounds about right. That would have made my sister 3 months and me almost 2. I have no memory of it, I've just seen 8mm movies of the rest of the tree being torn down.

Thanks for that info Chi. Now I am Googling and finding out all kinds of stuff about the tornado. It was an F2 but the same storm spawned an F5 in Topeka, Kansas.

That's probably the tornado that I was in. Here is the wiki and it mentions a tornado in Cook county

So going off of our handles you are two years older than me so you would have been about 4. Do you remember it?
What suburb did you live in? We lived in AH on Forrest Drive. Moved to Phoenix the summer of '70.

Yes, I was 4 and lived in Topeka, KS. I remember our house had some trees down but there were houses completely gone down to the foundation in our neighborhood.

That F5 is famous in Topeka history. It was so powerful it ripped grass right out of the ground. Cars were sucked up and tossed hundreds of feet away.

I’m thankful it missed your family because others weren’t so lucky. Homes were literally obliterated.

Looks like we could get another outbreak of tornadoes this afternoon. Apparently the heat dome over the West is causing crazy unsettled weather across the Midwest.

In 1974 I was living in Michigan, and my maternal grandparents were living in Ohio where my mom grew up and most of her brothers and sisters lived, so we used to go down all the time to see them.

One trip down my dad decided to drive through Xenia Ohio and look at the aftermath. It stuck with me to this day.

Two violent F5 tornadoes destroyed much of Xenia and Sayler Park (a western suburb of Cincinnati) in Ohio. Resulting in 34 deaths, the Xenia tornado was the deadliest of all tornadoes from this outbreak and remains among the top 10 costliest U.S. tornadoes on record (approximately $250 million in 1974).

112 degrees might actually kill the mold growing in the closets built on the northeast side of Eugene homes.

Talked with my brother in Portland. I asked him if he was losing his gills the way salamanders do when they crawl out of the water. He says it's so hot it's gonna turn Oregon's homegrown shiteaters into full fledged jihadists .... "like it has your GOP Taliban in Arizona."

Next up on Tucker: the connection between gills, BLM, and riots in the Pacific Northwest. Lizard people really are a thing and Freedumb! depends on it!

5% of their average yearly total number of lightning strikes for the entire country happened in .2% of the time over only about 100 square km because the wildfire smoke caused crazy intense thunderstorms that produced cloud to ground lightning that started more fires.
