Floods kill 8, leave 5 missing in town known for sect leader

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A wall of water swept away two vehicles carrying women and children in a Utah-Arizona border town, killing at least eight people and leaving five others missing in a community that served as a home base for polygamous sect leader Warren Jeffs, authorities said.

Three people survived as the flash flooding washed the vehicles several hundred yards downstream about 5 p.m. MDT Monday, Hildale assistant fire chief Kevin Barlow said. The Washington County Emergency Services Department said Tuesday morning that rescue crews were still searching for the five missing.

The flood "obviously caught these people off guard," Barlow told The Associated Press. "Witnesses say they were backing out of it trying to get away from it and it still swept them in."

Officials say the bodies of two people killed in flash flooding in southern Utah were recovered in Arizona about 2 1/2 miles downstream, while the bodies of six others were recovered in Utah.

Chris and Lydia Wyler, of Hildale, say heavy rainfall in the area usually draws spectators who love to splash in it and watch as it surges through creeks.

"People go out on the streets and kids will start playing," said Chris Wyler, 38. "But, this storm that hit yesterday, it was just so severe and so sudden."

"I've never seen a storm like this the whole 20 years I lived here," said Lydia Wyler, 38. "I had no idea it was going to be so dangerous."

So where did they bury the survivors?

I absolutely LOVE the weather here today. Misting, breezy, upper 60s to low 70s with soft sunlight filtering in between low, gray blankets of clouds.

Tufts of clouds are obscuring the tops of the red rocks and Mingus Mountain. Too f*cking gorgeous to even encapsulate in photos.

It'll probably "balance out" tomorrow with 100 and no rain, but I'll enjoy this while I have it.

Been raining non stop since 6:45a. At least an inch so far and its supposed to get worse tonight/tomorrow. Now this would have been the right storm to hand out sandbags. I bet Rillito is bank to bank and 10 feet deep tomorrow night. Probably going to see a similar scene from last year with cars under water on the freeway in Phx

Only up to 87 in your office? Nice to know that if I were in your office on a 100 degree day, the worst thing I'd suffer is wilting into a wrinkled, deep, hot pool of sweat contained by the deformed outer ring of my melted crotch. It would have to be a closed casket service after that.

Well, I am wearing shorts (cargo, not jorts), a loose polo shirt and sandals, so it's not like I have to wear a suit.

That's like me objecting to you riding a shopping cart down Lombard Street in SF, and you saying "Well, I will wear a helmet. It's not like I'll break anything more than my limbs, ribs, and face bones."

Not a safe working environment. Go home.

Tell that to my dad who did construction on roofs in Phoenix in the summer for 25 years where it was 110-150 degrees up there...

87 is perfectly manageable and fine. Hell I keep my house at like 83/84 in the summer.

My grandpa poured sidewalks in PHX during the Depression for the WPA. He said it wasn't that bad since he wore long sleeve shirts. He said the guys wearing t-shirts and tank tops suffered more than he did.

In any event, the scenery was outstanding yesterday. If I could only get my cell phone camera out without looking like a creepy old man.

Good. Push these 98 and 99's out for good. August and September (non-monsoon days) are the months when I start daydreaming of living somewhere else. Then October comes and I want to hug the ground I walk on here. With the ability to telework most days, I'm contemplating a second house in the Pinetop/Show Low area. But with two boys who will be in sports by the time I make that happen, that may not work too well.
