Seriously, as someone who has been through 4 of these, protect yourself from flying glass. If shit gets real, sleep in the bathroom. After Rita, we had large shards of glass embedded in our bedroom wall from our south facing windows. We were in a no window hallway, and it sounded like shotgun blasts when our windows blew out. I think Rita was only F2 by the time it got to Houston.
So here is the big debate.

We are floor 12, with facing away from the path of the store. Wind is blowing away from the direction our window is facing. In-laws are on floor 21, facing the direction this storm is heading.

My in-laws are stubborn old-world people. I have offered, pleaded to come to our room for the night, but they want to hunker down.

Both rooms have large heavy sun blocking curtains, which might help. Also in-laws and wife a lulled into a sense of security because its not really that windy outside. And I'm tired, but want to be careful, but not alarmist.

At what point do I go to the bathroom? Right now? When I hear wind picks up? rain gets worse? I really don't know what do to, and I have a 14mo who I love with every ounce of my being.

Furthermore the hotel has no plan, they said keep the curtains drawn you'll be fine. In there defense the last time they got something like this was in '59.

Any advice would be welcome.

You will know when you need to move if you're sober. Shit will get real. Like trees rolling down the street real. Not sure what to tell you on n-laws. I wouldn't sleep in an elevated room with windows facing storm, but heavy curtains will probably work. Cat 2 blew our blinds off the wall when Windows blew. I would think curtains would contain glass but who knows. Here is the deal, this bitch is going to spin some tornadoes and if you're in that, game over. Most likely you guys are fine, but do you really want to be the family on the news that didn't take the right precautions? The one on message boards as a Darwin candidate?

Just caught the 14 month old part of your post. My personal opinion, sleep in the bathroom. Don't be fucking dumb. You're 99% fine, but that 1% is a never forgiving situation.

Any body holding their breath waiting for the religiously insane mega-bullshit preachers to start blaming Patricia on Mexico's penchant for sending their rapists and drug smugglers to America?

Heavy rain, little winds!

Patricia passed the Guad to the west at 1am and was far about at 4.

Cloudy skies, with no rain, and little wind currently. Flight on as planned, Airport open!

Game on.

Thanks for the tips dill. I let the family sleep and stayed up until I thought we were in the clear. If shit when down I was going to physically put everyone in the bathroom. As for the in-laws, they had a bathroom with a wall that they said they would use if needed to sleep. Not a drop of EtOH was drank yesterday, but certainly will be on the flight home today.

A freaking Miracle. Early reports looks like PV was spared, that the mountains broke it up heading inland, and no deaths reported.

Will be great to get home.

Houston is a great city; moved here from the Old Pueblo 5 months ago and enjoy the energy, diversity, enthusiasm and just about everything. Great economy and a lot going on here - sports, culture, great restaurants.

Anytime I look at the weather there even in the winter it's like 89 and super humid. I just can't see myself living on a swamp year round. I also don't understand why anyone lives in Florida.

The average high temperature for Houston is 78.3. From November to April we pretty much hang in the low to mid 70s. In the summer there is prevailing coastal wind that brings humidity off the beach.

My first summer in Bayou city. Not nearly as hard to tolerate as the many years of dry, searing heat I suffered through in Tucson. It's also nice to have abundant trees, grass and flowers because it rains!

Give it up, Houston residents. Hater says it's a year-round swamp lacking any reason to live there. So it is. Also, Comanche is a wing, Smith will never play again and today promises to be another shitty day.

Absolutely. I post my thoughts. What anyone else thinks is of no concern to me. But obviously my posts absolutely ruin other people's days for some reason and they absolutely consume them. Which I have no idea why. I'm just a guy posting on a message board but it absolutely destroys people's emotions for some reason.

I dunno, I think pretty much every day is pleasant in coastal California.

http://www.businessinsider.com/map-us-c ... ton-2014-2" target="_blank

“pleasant” here means the mean temperature was between (55° F and 75° F), the minimum temperature was above 45° F, the maximum temperature was below 85° F and there was no significant precipitation or snow depth.

The 5 most pleasant places:

Los Angeles — 183 days/year

San Diego— 182 days/year

Oxnard — 166 days/year

Simi Valley — 156 days/year

San Francisco — 153 days/year

The 5 least pleasant places:

McAllister, Montana — 14 days/year

Northeast of Reno, Nevada — 15 days/year

Clancy, Montana — 15 days/year

Douglas, Wyoming —15 days/year

East of Cedarville, California — 16 days/year

Houston has 67 pleasant days.

Massive windstorm in Spokane. Big pine trees down all over. Cars, homes crushed. Power out for 24 hours for me. Still out for tens of thousands. And it is cold. Lost a big tree in back yard. It's resting on fence, which amazingly has remained upright. Two people killed by falling trees..

Photos here.

Spokane made the national news last night. 100 year old trees falling down.

Upper midwest going to get some snow already.

Friday and Saturday will be mid 70s here on the coast.

This is actually late for measurable snow. In Chicago the average date for first measureable snow is October 21st and the date for the first flakes overall is usually a few weeks before that. The fact that we're almost to Thanksgiving and haven't seen even one snowflake is a total anomaly.

Thanks El Nino!!!

It's been super nice here up until really this week. Average high is in the upper 40s but we've been seeing steady 60s.

I, for one, am ready to see some snow. My wife on the other hand is dreading winter.

This year is setting up to be much like the winter we experienced a few years ago when we had 60s and 70s even in January/February. Which was followed by two of the most brutal winters I've ever experienced, so there's that...

yep the MN, WI, northern IL, northern IN, IA area is supposed to have a very dry and warmer than average winter because....El Nino. While in the southwest and south (here) it is supposed to be much wetter and slightly cooler than usual. I'm fine with that here.
