Who cares?

Do you? I mean, I know you love your children, Arizona Basketball, justice and equality, animals, travel, books and TV shows, and that former female prison inmate with the plastered-down hair and the eternally unsurprised look behind the counter at the Circle K. Physicians care about their patients, teachers their students, journalists their stories. And almost everybody wants recognition, to help those who are less fortunate, to ensure that their neighbors and coworkers happy, to maintain health, to have more money instead of less money, and to keep your job or get a better one.
But all of that stuff really only takes up a pretty small fraction of our daily experiences, which are otherwise dominated by calls for meetings to talk about possibilities for collaborations and new synergies, the need for more professional mentoring, or whatever is the equivalent in your world.
As far as the majority of things go, do you simply not care about things that you think you're supposed to pretend to care about?
I'm honestly confused about whether or not people around me are for real about these things. I don't know if I'm just working in a weird place, but everyone seems so sincere. All I want to do is hide and hope they don't think to email me about something.
