Sports Rules Changes

Do you ever imagine what introducing new rules would do to a game?

Here's one for college basketball: three free-throws for defensive fouls committed in the restricted zone under the basket, or two free-throws if the shot or dunk goes in ("and two!").

one rule i've often wanted (well, more mused about than wanted) to see in the NFL....automatic 4th down.

every other penalty on a defense is an automatic 1st down to the opposing offense....well, i think it's time to even it up.

make some of the penalties an offense commits be an automatic 4th down. Offensive PI? Automatic 4th down. Offensive holding? Automatic 4th down.

etc.

NFL wise, a common sense interpretation of what a catch is has been needed for a long time. From Calvin Johnson to Dez Bryant to Jesse James, there have been too many games turned by the odd "going to the ground" provisions that defy sense. Make a single definition of possession plus football move and that's it.

Basketball, no one fouls out. If you commit a foul beyond a prescribed limit, add an extra free throw (or maybe 2 plus the ball). It lets stars play but discourages hacking.

Remember back in grade school when a play would go completely south and you got to a call an "Automatic-Do-Over"?

I think all professional sports should incorporate this into their rules.

I hate free throws, so no free throws. The fouled team keeps possession and the fouling player has to sit in a box like they do in hockey for 2 minutes or whatever.

With Pac 12 refs, that's gonna bleed down to a 1 on 1 game pretty fast.

At that point, you just need to draw a touch foul and exploit the constant 1 on 0 fastbreak after.

I half joke about Pac refs, but it's only half a joke. I don't see other conferences having 10 fouls in 5 minute stretches like the Pac.

MLB-Pitch clock
NBA-No more moving the ball up on a time out
NHL-One fight challege a game where you fight at center ice and the winner goes on a power play
NFL-Better definition of what is a catch and one blue challenge flag to be used once a game to review a call or non call by the officials
College Football-clock doesnt stop on first downs except for final 2 minutes of a half
College Basketball-Six fouls per game before disqualification

For NBA and College- maybe get rid of guys fouling out but if a guy has more than a limit of 5 or 6 it is FTs and the ball for the other team?

Basketball - Up to 5 fouls = possession, after 5 fouls = 1 free throw and possession.

Baseball - Batter repeatedly stepping out of the batter's box = death penalty.

Basketball--Let refs review whatever call they want at whatever time they want. It's silly that if they see an obvious foul in a review, they can't call it. It's also silly that blown calls are cool for most of the game, then only get reviewed late.

The counter to this is the potential to slow the game rhythym. Deal with that by making part of refs grading be appropriate use of review to not interrupt the flow of the game. If refs are effing up often enough that it seriously affects things or can't make a call without a crutch, that's a problem in and of itself.

For all sports, put the replay official in the booth with the TV announcers. They get it right 99.99% of the time and know within 1 minute or less. if it takes more than 1 minute, the ruling on the field/court stands.

This is specific to media furor, but this year I would have supported a blanket rule that teams stayed in the locker room during the national anthem. The coverage over who sits, kneels, stand and the endless outrage cycle got really, really old for me.

Play the anthem, have teams come out, do intros and start the game. There's no requirement to be out there, and it's been done before.

6 fouls in college, 5 for the pro's. Pro's are better equipped to handle and the game is shorter in college.

I hate that a great player who picks up 2 early fouls in college has to sit for the rest of the half (more than likely). Especially come Tourney time where it's one and done.

It's a slow pitch softball rule. Extra innings start with one on and one out.

Yeah it's pretty funny to see it floated for MLB

How about not playing it at all?

I'm OK with that, forced patriotism seems very fascist to me.
