WTF???
Kerr leads the conference in threes and assists!
Tonite, he has 8 assists vs 1 TO.

Re: Game #25 vs California
Yesterday I found out that the local pub had a betting machine that offered bets on NCAA basketball (I'm in OZ).
It was absolutely impossible to operate. It didn't have any 'interesting' games that I could find. games like Slippery Rock vs The Bleeding Sisters of the Bronze Adze. Or something like that.
Bouncing around I did find a list of conferences and tried to scroll down. Everytime id try to scroll it set a bet. When I'd clear the bet, it would bounce to something else and you couldn't get back to where you were.
Weird. I WAS gonna try betting this game, but it was just stupid.

Here’s a question for y’all: How many of Zu’s baskets were unassisted???
Overall, 21 of Arizona’s 31 made baskets so far were assisted.

CTL says Kerr has been sick the last few days
Re: Game #25 vs California
Played great the first 10 minutes or so. Coasted the rest of the way. We can do that against CAL.
Watched the ASu at Furd game too. ASu is athletic, but plays a lot of 1-on-1 street ball. If they get hot, they can beat anyone. But play great team ball, and they are beatable. If Furd had a few more athletes, they would've won easily. We're just as athletic as ASu, but play better team ball. Keep focus, and we should beat Furd easily.

Good morning DMJ
This is your wake up call.
Arizona State might have the most surprisingly anemic history in men's basketball of any program that you might think is better than it is.

Re: Game #25 vs California
Kerr just needs to make the shots in games we need him to...last night was not one of them.
I liked the 8 assists to 1 TO though.
Pelle had another good game.
And Ballo with 14 and 9.
The free throws were abysmal. What was up with that?

Re: Game #25 vs California
I couldn't agree more. Our ceiling is very limited due to this weakness. Lack of athleticism doesn't help either. We'll get exposed in the tournament unless we get favorable matchups which we never do. A team with athletic guards will run us off the court.

I don't understand the negativity right now. I'll take efficient offense and physical defense over athleticism any day.

LOL, Kerr Kriisa is top 15 IN THE NATION in assists but some of you complainers want an “above average” guard?
What’s “average” in your world? Top 10?

Can’t wait to hear how our guard play had nothing to do with 30 wins but everything to do with 1 tourney loss. The mental gymnastics will be a sight to see.

Re: Game #25 vs California
Kriisa isn't the most athletic guy, but Ramey and Larrson are above average athletes. So is Henderson. It allows us to switch on D without opponents taking advantages of mismatches. This speaks to the athletic ability of the guys. You need quickness to be able to guard guys who are either bigger or smaller than you on a switch. And even Kriisa holds his own defensively against most guys he's guarding.
We're also a decent shooting team from deep. Kriisa had an awful game last night shooting 0-5, but as a team, we still shot 42.3% from deep, highlighted by Larrson's 3-3 shooting, and Henderson's 3-6, with Ramey going 2-5. Where we struggled is at the line, shooting an atrocious 6-17! But that's a lack of focus, especially after we got up big early. We're generally a good FT shooting team, and I expect we'll do better in closer games.
If this team has a weakness, it's a guy who can create his own shot any time down the court like Mathurin. Who is the go-to guy late in games you want the isolate with the ball in his hands? Tommy and the staff understand we don't have this type of guy, which is why we run very little iso, but instead really focus on spacing, ball movement, and the high/lo game with the bigs. Still, there are just some times in a game where you need to let you best player have the ball and get out of his way.

Re: Game #25 vs California
This is a given for not only our team but any top team that gets knocked off in the Tourney. You do realize only 1 team wins it.CardiacCats97 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 10, 2023 9:44 am Can’t wait to hear how our guard play had nothing to do with 30 wins but everything to do with 1 tourney loss. All teams have deficiencies including ours. There are no perfect teams especially this year.
Doesn't mean we can't enjoy and heap praise on a team that's ranked 4th in the nation, won a pre-season tournament, has a legit first team All-American, a coach that is setting records for wins over a 2 year period, 1/2 game out in the conference standings. Oh, and has a 22-3 record so far and projected to be a #1 seed.

Player Efficiency Ratings (PER) for Arizona regular rotation players:
30.4 Azoulas Tubelis
26.7 Oumar Ballo
17.5 Henri Veesaar
16.4 Pelle Larsson
15.0 The AVERAGE D1 college basketball player - by definition
14.1 Courtney Ramey
12.8 Cedric Henderson
12.6 Kerr Krissa
10.3 Adama Bal
10.0 Kylan Boswell
If Arizona had an above average guard, just one, they would be darn near unbeatable.

Re: Game #25 vs California
FACT #1: There is no such thing as an "unbeatable" team in basketball.
FACT #2: In a single elimination tournament, like the NCAA Basketball tournament, the "best team" does not always (Usually??) win!!!
FACT #3: Wins are NOT a PG stat!!! D'uh!!!
Wins are a TEAM stat!!!
And the U of A has had one of the most nearly "unbeatable" teams in the country over the past two years.
Discuss.

Re: Game #25 vs California
Not sure how you can talk about how our guys are below average guards and then use PER to compare them to all players to try and prove your point.
There are only 29 guards in the top 100 PER rankings. Big men rank higher in PER because they take shots closer to the basket and hit a higher percentage of shots overall. They also get more rebounds and blocks. Let’s try comparing apples to apples next time.

Re: Game #25 vs California
My dad sent me this, not sure the source.
Lloyd didn’t necessarily attribute Kerr’s errant 3-point shooting to his illness, but Kriisa did miss the Wildcats’ practices on Monday and Tuesday and was limited in Wednesday’s workout before suiting up Thursday. Kriisa also managed to dish eight assists with only one turnover in 28-minutes.
“He got really sick,” Lloyd said. “It’s going around this time of the year. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, he wasn’t really around that much. So for him to kind of work in a little bit of practice yesterday and come out and give us minutes, when he wasn’t feeling his best, says a lot about his character and the team player he is.”
Assuming 300 teams in Div I with 300 starting PGs, not sure where below average comes in.
