Maybe he should just amputate both legs to be on the safe side.

It's a tragedy that athletes in America have to go to message boards to get medical advice.

This is ridiculous  There are countless former athletes who never tore a single ligament in either knee and have long-term knee problems, even starting in their 30s. I'm one myself.

The telltale exaggeration and/or distortion (highlighted in red), followed by the argument against that straw man.

It's a winning formula!

There is apparently no middle ground between "will never have an issue again" and "will never play again."

The only person on this board who is certain of the outcome is Dr. Hater, whose expert medical opinion is that Ray's basketball career is undoubtedly over.

I definitely won't say that I'm 100% certain Ray will have a full recovery, because complications are always possible with any surgery/recovery, but this is an ACL tear that occurred in 2015. Recovery rates for ACL tears today are sitting at 98%. Now if he suffered a complicated injury where a meniscus was torn and anything else that made it more complicated I'd definitely pause more about my hopes for his success next season and his long term career, but good lord he had a mere clean ACL tear and this injury is so routine for athletes nowadays. Honestly when is the last time you've heard a negative prognosis for a guy who tore his ACL? Hater's take is so asinine it holds no basis in reality in this decade. My only answer for his ridiculous take is he's from the 1980s and is a time traveler. That's legitimately all I've got. Hater must truly be terrified of his favorite pitchers getting Tommy John surgery too.

Based on a normal recovery/rehab Ray Smith should be damn near if not absolutely the same athlete he was the day he tore the ACL in his other knee.

I got about 4 or 5 pics on my iphone of Ray taking some shots before the USC game. Completely amazing that this guy was able to cheat a career ending injury and actually be walking before 2019.

In hindsight, it was better Ray injured it when he did in terms of his 2016-17 season. He has no pressure to rush the recovery, he keeps the year of eligibility, just everything. Obviously, it would have been better if he didn't injure it in the first place, but if it was going to go, he's on the best timetable that can exist.

Don't think Ray is all that concerned about the extra year of eligibility but you never know.

I'm not as negative as hater, but I would wait until we see him action to decide the extra year isn't implicated. The "he should never play again" is a little nutso, but it isn't crazy to see his career trajectory as an unknown right now.

We all saw what happened to McClellan when injured knees hamper ur explosiveness.

He could def become a 4 year player now. Not saying I'd bet on it but I wouldn't rule it out either.

My guess is he goes the Bash route and is 3 and done no matter his draft status. He will likely have his degree by then too.

I think without the injury we were getting him for 2 years, this and next.

He is a really impressive, well-spoken, and likable kid. What is even more amazing is the number of times I have said that in the last 6-7 years about players Miller has recruited to Arizona.

The only thing that is a slight concern and it really isn't a big deal is that Ray hasn't played in a competitive game of basketball since his junior year of high school. I know it's not like he hasn't touched a basketball in 3 years, but still, there should be quite a bit of rust built up to start next season. That's one of the reasons I think LM starts the season at the 4 and RS comes off the bench. Ease him back into the game. No pressure on him coming off the bench. What other team in the country will have a player of Ray's caliber coming off the bench? Next year should be fun.

Not according to the athletics site and haven't seen him near the team bench for any game

Article from 2020:

https://www.azdesertswarm.com/basketbal ... covery-now
Smith on the mental toll of recovering from three ACL tears: “That’s a really good question because most people don’t think about the mental aspect of being injured, not being able to do something you love or not even being able to do the little things like getting up to go to the bathroom by yourself without crutches or being able to walk downstairs. It really takes a toll on your mind. And I personally know about two or three people who suffered injuries and had to quit their respective sports and they were just never the same. They used to be loving, outgoing and now they are very temperamental. Some of them have been diagnosed bipolar. So no one really understands that this is actually something that ruins peoples’ lives sometimes. But for me it took a long time, about two or three years, for me to just understand that maybe I have a different goal.”
