Aussie Boomers to play U.S College All-Stars team

Post by RichardCranium »

Not sure where to put this exactly, but here we go anyway...

Heard about this the other day when someone in Andrew Gaze' office stopped by the newsagent to pick up a package.

Aussie Boomers to play U.S College All-Stars team
...With the Boomers set to select their 12-man squad for the Olympics on July 11, the July 12 and July 14 matches against the USA Pac-12 College All-Stars...
Anybody heard about this? Who is gonna coach? Who is gonna play? I might just have to show up for this one as long as it isn't 85% ASU and CAL players.

The Aussie players include Andrew Bogut, Matthew Dellavedova, Patty Mills, Joe Ingles and Aron Baynes. Bogut is always injured before the Olympics anyway, so even if he is reasonably healthy I doubt he'll play in this, they will probably keep him in cotton wool after the NBA finals.

That's using the term "all-star" pretty loosely:

Should have just sent the 2016 Arizona team. Great for team building, and give the Aussies a better game.

Pretty sure I'll go see the game(s). I think I have enough Arizona gear.

As posted in another thread...

Note that Melbourne Tigers is a club team. The OLD Melbourne Tigers of the Australian National Basketball League (NBL) are now called Melbourne United, having merged with South Melbourne Magic ( I think that was their most recent name anyway).

Pac-12 All-Stars dominate Melbourne Tigers in Sunday scrimmage

MELBOURNE, Australia – The Pac-12 Men’s Basketball All-Star Team scored the game’s first 10 points and never looked back en route to a 107-51 victory over the Melbourne Tigers of the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) Sunday afternoon at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

California’s Stephen Domingo led four members of the Pac-12 All-Stars in double figures with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting from three-point range. Utah’s Lorenzo Bonam collected 16 points and two steals, while the Arizona pair of Chance Comanche (14) and Kadeem Allen (10) rounded out the team’s double-digit scorers.

“I was pleased overall,” Pac-12 All-Star Team head coach Mike Montgomery said. “We shared the ball well. There are so many things we have to try and teach in a short period of time and I am pleased with their attitude. We had a nice practice yesterday after we arrived here in Australia and the guys really had their legs underneath them today. We shot the ball pretty well and moved it pretty well.”

Playing under FIBA’s four 10-minute quarter format, the Pac-12 All-Stars stormed out to a 30-16 advantage after one quarter of play. The Tigers tried to cut into the lead towards the middle of the second quarter, before Stevie Thompson Jr. ended their run with a bucket with 2:21 to play in the opening half. The Pac-12 All-Stars built some momentum of their own to stretch their lead to 55-32 at the half.

The Pac-12 All-Stars clamped down on defense in the second half, holding Melbourne to just 19 points and 7-of-32 (21.8 percent) on field goals over the final 20 minutes of the game.

Domingo scored six points in each of the first three quarters, before sitting out the final period. He totaled 18 minutes on the court in Sunday’s contest, tying Melbourne’s Ari Stewart, a former member of USC’s program, with the game-high point total.

“We have been competing against each other the past five days, so it was good to come out and go against some other competition,” Domingo said. “We put together a strong all-around performance and played unselfish basketball. It was good to bond with our guys and get out and play in front of these fans. The people of Melbourne have been such great hosts these last two days and we are thankful to be a part of this experience.”

The Pac-12 All-Star team got production throughout its lineup, with 11 of the 12 players recording points in Sunday’s contest. Colorado’s Wesley Gordon collected a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with six points and a block in 17 minutes of action, while sitting out the final quarter.

USC’s Jordan McLaughlin totaled a game-high five assists in 19 minutes of action. Allen and Stanford’s Dorian Pickens had two three-point field goals each to join Domingo with multiple three-pointers in the contest as the Pac-12 All-Stars converted 13 threes in the game.

The Pac-12 All-Star Team now turns its attention to the Australian Men’s National Team. The Pac-12 All-Stars will face the Boomers at Hisense Arena in Melbourne on Tuesday (July 12) at 2:30 a.m. PT. It will be the first of two exhibition contests against the Boomers, as the two teams will also face each other on Thursday (July 14) at 2:30 a.m. PT. Both games will be carried live on the Pac-12 Network with Roxy Bernstein and Don MacLean calling all the action.

Write up of Tuesday's game against the Australian National Team in a pre-Olympic warmup. I should have been at this game but couldn't make it. Hopefully I'll be at Thursdays rematch.

Australian Boomers vs Pac-12 college All-Stars highlights: Boomers by 9 in Game 1 of Rio farewell

There is a highlights video at the link.

Match Results:

The Australian Boomers have recorded an unconvincing nine-point victory in Game 1 of their Rio Olympics farewell series against the Pac-12 College All-Stars at Hisense Arena.

Unfortunately for the Boomers and the near sell-out crowd that turned up to watch the contest, both Andrew Bogut and Chris Goulding were kept out due to injury, while Matthew Delladedova joined them on the sideline with insurance papers yet to be cleared by his new NBA club, the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Boomers were expected to take a relatively easy win against the youthful and inexperienced pac-12 team from the United States, but it was anything but.

The All-Stars played with a near perfect mix of aggression and structure throughout the first half, and after taking a four point lead into the quarter time break were down by two at halftime.

The Boomers seemed to be unable to defend with any impact during the first quarter, and only a late run from Aron Baynes, who would top score with 28 points that brought the Boomers back to within four.

Australia were marginally better during the second quarter, but again it was mainly thanks to Mills and Baynes, with little bits of support from Kevin Lisch and Daivd Andersen to peg the All-Stars back.

Kadeem Allen was brilliant for the Pac-12 team, leading them with 15 points while Tra Holder, Dorian Pickens and Stephen Domingo added plenty on offence.

Josh Hawkinson was one of the All-Stars best, as he was strong in the paint and the only one really able to stand up to Baynes, while he defended well.

The third quarter saw the Boomers run away with the game though, and there would be no coming back for the pac-12 college all-stars, even if they kept the game alive during the fourth quarter and simply refused to go away.

It was the same players for the Boomers though, with Aron Baynes being untouchable in the paint. It raises questions for the Olympics though, with Baynes potentially unable to dominate against world class teams like he can a team of college players.

They would outscore the pac-12 team by 11 in the third quarter, and while the fourth quarter went more like the first, they managed to hold on for the victory.

Game 2 will be on Thursday, and the Boomers need to put on a much stronger showing as they continue to build for Rio. The All-Stars, with only NBA scouts to impress, and no expectations though will be no pushovers.

Final Score
Australian Boomers 92
Pac-12 College All-Stars 83

Match Preview:

The Australian Boomers look to put the finishing touches on their preparations for the Rio Olympic Games with a pair of matches against the Pac-12 College All-Stars at Hisense Arena. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage of Game 1 from 7:30pm (AEST).

The Boomers have been rated a solid chance for a medal in Rio, and that doesn’t really come as a surprise when you look at their squad.

Unfortunately for the Boomers, Andrew Bogut will miss these matches – and most likely the Olympics – while youngsters Ben Simmons and Dante Exum have opted out of the Games to focus on their burgeoning NBA careers

However, there is still a lot of talent in the side, which is made up of players from the NBA, NBL and right around the world.

Matthew Delladedova and Patty Mills are the obvious drawcards, and will have a massive role in keeping the ball moving from the guard positions, while fellow NBA players Joe Ingles and Cameron Bairstow should be included in the starting five.

With Bogut out, Detroit’s Aron Baynes and will play a massive role in the side. Backed up with NBL talent in the form of Chris Goulding and defensive extraordinaire Daniel Martin, it is easy to see why the Boomers are one of the favourites for Rio.

Their style is likely to be a fairly aggressive one, with scoring options in Delladedova and Mills at the one and two guard spots. If they can get their floor spacing right, then Baynes will have a big say inside the paint.

The college side is full of future NBA stars. Josh Hawkinson, Jordan McLaughlin and Wesley Gordon, who all received accolades at the end of their college seasons, will lead the side as they try to knock over one of the better international sides in world basketball.

Hawkinson, playing for Washington, had a massive junior year by recording 20 double doubles in 29 games and is touted as one of brightest upcoming stars, with the ability to play either forward position.

Gordon is likely to play out of the post and has great shot blocking ability, while McLaughlin will lead the team from the point after a strong year at the University of South Carolina.

Chance Comanche, the team’s only true centre, will have an important role to play, particularly in keeping Nate Jawai off the glass.

It might be a preparation game for the Boomers, but they’ll still be looking to get as much out of the game time as possible as the Olympics draw nearer and nearer.

Prediction
The Boomers should have too much talent and experience for the exciting 12-pac All-Stars, but it will be one entertaining game with plenty of future NBA players on the court.

OK, I'm here. it's half time. Allstate down by 12.

Kadeem scored allstars first bucket - crowd other at the move.

P12 can't hit 3s. Chance OK on defence but getting beat badly by Baynes.
T. Holder is a jackass - tries to do every thing himself. Loses the ball every time he dribbles usually into a crowd of defenders. Thybull looks pretty good but he's listed as 6-5 but he must be at least 6-8.

Leading scorer is Domingo I think. Or eubanks.

P12 shot like warmed over dogpoop. Final score 93-63. Ouch. Credit to Aussies, they looked like they mean business in Rio. Not too many teams, including USA is gonna have such mobile bugs.

Holder hiscored for p12 with 9 (yes nine). Kadeem had 8. Chance hd 2 I think off free throws late in the game. Should had more if Holder wasn't being so blind and selfish.

A couple of times I think a play was called for Chance and he was perfectly placed for an alley pop, but Holder completely ignored him, drove full tilt into ... where? The corner? At a million !miles an hour? With Baynes, motrum, and ingles all collapsing on him? Nuts. Turn over three times in a row.

Nobody but nobody on the allstars had any idea of where anybody else was at any time, with the possible exception of Kadeem. Over and over and over guys would blindly dribble full tilt into a two or three man trap. It was ugly.

And did I mention that there was some sort of a force field covering the p12basket?

Kadeem scored the first and last points for the p12 and had a great Parrom-esk block that was ruled a goaltend, but what the heck... NO EASY BUCKETS!

Not a stellar game for either Cat.

I'm not a real big Kadeem fan either. Appreciate him being here, but just not a PG. Really hard to follow a true PG like TJ.
