Edited from 97 Days now that Holt has number 50.

Holt is a 6-4, 285, Freshman defensive tackle from Salpointe HS, Tucson. (I've seen him reported as short as 6-1 and as high as 300 lbs, but 6-4/285 is from the official signing day release). He is the son of Julius Holt who was an Arizona linebacker in 1981 and 1982 and a leader on teams that defeated #1 ranked USC, Norte Dame and started the streak against ASSu.

Holt plays a position of need for the Wildcats, but it is tough to count on a Freshman to make an immediate impact on the defensive line. He is large, but has also showed some inconsistent play.

Here is some analysis on Holt from Steven Rodriguez of Arizona Desert Swarm:
Instantly after watching film, you will notice why RichRod loves what Holt brings to Arizona. He is a hardworking, coachable player, which is a staple to the Coach Rodriguez recruiting logic. RichRod's stress on having space-eaters is evident with this commit as Holt demands a double team with his presence on the field. Even with Holt's mammoth size, he displays good lateral quickness and effort pursuing to the ball carrier. Also, with his impressive use of hand fighting, Holt is able to disengage opposing linemen with ease as he disrupts the backfield.

However, Holt's raw technique and dependency on his size causes blemishes in his game. Holt's most obvious fault is his tendency to shoot up from his stance; this negates any advantage his size will bring. His tendency of taking a false step is another glaring issue. With his speed, Holt cannot have any wasted movement. Fortunately, with another year to polish his game, while increasing muscle mass, Holt will step onto campus as an improved, intimidating player.

Countdown Note: 97 is an open spot on the roster. When a spot is open I fill it with an incoming player likely to play that position. I use "97 Days" in the title to indicate it is an open roster spot. Once we run out of incoming players who could fill that number then I will use members of the coaching staff. Holt will likely be assigned 50 which is also an open spot, but I prefer not to guess what number a player will eventually choose.

1997 was the year Arizona won the NCAA National Basketball Championship.
