QB situation. Packages?

I'm just a fan, not an x's and o's guy, so I hope this doesn't sound silly.

It seems like one of the issues with platooning QBs is the need to practice timing and get in sync with receivers and running backs.

In thinking about it, I realized we are deep in running backs, receivers and tight ends. Could Fisch be planning on packaging our QBs with a platoon of 3 specific receivers, a specific tight end,, and 1 or 2 specific running backs?

These packages could come in on different series and could practice together to get their timing down. Crazy?

I don't think we're deep enough to pull that off.

The only thing I'll throw out there is that you absolutely have a different mix of plays you call to play to the strengths of a given player. Stay in their comfort zone, and follow the statistics to let them each run the stuff they do best. To some extent, the QB battle is to find the optimal performer on each play, but also the guy who can do the best job with the broadest part of your playbook to give you the most flexibility. So, it's inevitable that each will provide a different look, just based on the different mix of plays called for each (and the fact that Plummer scrambles more.) In Dick Tomey's first year, Bobby Watters ran the run-and-shoot, which required a zone secondary, and Ronnie Veal ran the wishbone, which required man coverage. It required preparation for both, but it didn't really work as hoped. I was always intrigued with the idea that if Veal developed enough as a passer, you could line up wishbone, shift into run-and-shoot, and have a chance for a big play. But, that never happened. The consensus seems to be that Fisch will pick a full-time starter by conference season, if not sooner.

I'm also not ruling out the possibility that Fisch in spite of what he has said is doing a bit of gamesmanship. Letting BYU guess what's going on. This also makes them prepare for two different QBs even though they don't have a lot of film on either one. Other than that, what CatinTheHat said.

Certainly think there will be situations where field position may determine who they use. For sure What We Plummer can use his legs more and Cruz seems to turn it over less.

I do have a suspicion that You Plummer is a bit of a gamer and Cruz is so laid back that the coaches might feel they can benefit from that. Either Plummer ignites that fire in Cruz or Cruz gets the Matt Scott treatment

If their High School careers are any indication Cruz should be the far superior passer. Stats were excellent in High School compared to Plummer. Granted maybe the speed of the college game is playing a factor in Cruz having problems adapting?
