$2.1 million budget shortfall could cause Hawai'i to drop football soon.

They need to go independent and book about 5 big games a year. Maybe that would help with attendance and the shortfall. Of course maybe they couldn't get smaller teams to fly over and play or they can't afford the guarantee.

Oh well, they can be the Gonzaga of the pacific then

Used to be that any team travelling to Hawaii could use that as an extra game not counting against the limit, 13 games instead of 12. Is that still the case?

Was still true as of last year according to this article:

They should try and get sponsorship from a big airline and get some travel discounts thrown in as a benefit.

Yes it is. Washington travels there this year and has 13 games on the schedule. The downside is you give up a bye week, so Washington opens league play with Stanford, then a bye, then closes with 8 consecutive games. It's the first game on the schedule, but I would guess that the league schedule would have been different if they only had 3 non-conference games.

When the Pac-10 became 12 and added a championship game (essentially cutting the regular season by one week) the incentive to play Hawai'i for that 13th game went away. If you look at Big5 teams with UH on the schedule, a lot of them are choosing to just play 12 and keep the second Bye Week.

Does football not generate 90% of the revenue like at other schools? I understand it is really really expensive, but you've still got to fly the other thousand or so athletes to the West Coast to compete in non-revenue sports several times a season.

I like the Independent idea.

[*]They've got their own bowl game, what do they need a conference for?
[*]Get permission to start a week earlier, and schedule two mid-week (or Monday night) games in the 48 so they don't miss more than a few days of class.
[*]Work out some late November arrangement with the Big10/Notre Dame.
[*]The Big12 has no champ game, so get a recurring game with them for the final week. The Big12's better programs I would think would love the chance for a 13th game in the new postseason structure.
