2016 Softball season thread

The 2016 UofA softball season begins in a couple of weeks and is ranked 13th. This team will have a different look than what we have used to in the past years. The offense won't be as powerful but the pitching will be a lot better with the additions of Danielle O'Toole and Taylor McQuillin. They also can throw Michelle Floyd and Nancy Bowling. The offense will be led by Katiyana Mauga, who is on pace to threaten not only the all-time UofA home run record, but the NCAA one too. Lauren Young, Mo Mercado and Mandie Perez. This team also has some really fast runners in Eva Watson and Ashleigh Hughes. A freshman to look at and could make an impact is Hillary Edior. I am hoping this team can get Candrea back to the Oklahoma City.

Nice story on Taylor McQuillin. Looking forward to watching her pitch. The UofA has not has a lefty pitcher since Leslie Wolfe.

I've seen her and Michelle Floyd pitch in the bullpen and the circle a few times. They can both bring it. Floyd is really tall, I wanna say 6-2 or 3.

If the ladies get into a shoot out without the offensive prowess of past season they could have problems. Hopefully with the speed they have that will kind of balance it out.. I'm with you Irish really looking forward to this year's pitching.

Top of the second and the Cats are beating Southern Utah 6-2. Nice to see Nancy Bowling back as she hit a homer in her first at bat. O'Toole has given up 2 solo homers, hopefully it's just opening game nerves. She is not a power pitcher, will have to win by throwing a lot of off-speed pitches.

In her Wildcat debut, Taylor McQuillin, tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout as the Cats beat Southern Utah 10-0. I know it's way too early but Taylor could finally be that pitcher Candrea has been looking for. The UofA also beat North Texas 9-1 yesterday as Nancy Bowling won her first game of the year.

The UofA begins the season winning all six of their games this weekend. It wasn't against top-notch competition but they showed some good things. Candrea has said they won't hit as many homers as last year but they hit 14 dingers this week, so that is a good sign. A player who came out and is showing she deserves to start this year is Eva Watson. She had a big week, even getting her first career homer. If she and Perez can get on base, teams will have to pitch to Mauga and Mercado.

Pitching will be the key and after this weekend, you can see they have talent but they just have to get more experience. McQuillin pitched well except today, but that will happen due to her inexperience pitching at this level. O'Toole did not do as well as I thought she would, but it's still early. Bowling did not pitch a lot and I think Candrea is slowly going to bring her along. She will she more playing time on the field rather than on the mound.

Cats lose to #25 Texas A&M 8-4. O'Toole lost her first game as she could not get out of the second, surrendering 7 runs. The good news was Bowling pitched 4.2 innings, giving up one run and striking out 7. The bad news is Eva Watson was taken out of the game in the first inning after beating out a bunt. They can't afford to lose her as she has been one of the most impressive hitters so far.

The #20 Cats go on the road and beats #25 Texas 3-2 in eight innings. This team is so unpredictable, one game they look like a contender and then another game they look mediocre.

The softball team swept Stanford on the road this weekend. Looks like Candrea has found his starting 9 and the girls are hitting much better than they were a month ago. O'Toole is definitely the #1 pitcher and McQuillin is doing very well for a freshman.

Cats beat Cal 11-2 and take the series 2 games to one. Now we wait for tomorrow's brackets to be announced. This team overall had much better pitching than the last four but the hitting was not as good. Next year's team will be loaded as they only lose Lauren Young and bring in a very good recruiting class. Plus, power hitter Alyssa Palomino, who was injured before the season, will add another big bat to the line-up.
