Re: 2016 Season thread
SEC 0-5 so far in supers (all at home too). Combine with the also overrated ACC, and the only super victories are Miami/BC playing each other, and FSU over Florida. LSU currently getting worked by Coastal. If aTm holds on vs TCU, that will be their first combined win against another conference. And remember, SEC/ACC combined for 5 of the 6 regional hosts that did not advance.

Re: 2016 Season thread
There is no doubt in my mind we have the pitching and hitting to play with anyone at the CWS.
If we can contain and minimize the errors, we are going to be as tough an out as anyone will find.
I know Bannister had a less than stellar day but he will bounce back.
We need to get that first day, first game win and be in the winners bracket from the start.

Re: 2016 Season thread
The most amazing part is we STILL are not playing well in the aspects of the game that we usually dominate. One runner in motion this game, gets doubled off. Zero for forever in sacrifices. No timely hitting. Mistake-filled ABs, like Dalbec up with bases loaded and one out, chasing pitches out of the zone like he was hungry for contact, which is good, but he was a walk away from winning, too. Weird subs (pulling Bannister when he was still effective, then kind of conceding by rolling Crawford out...if you are going to pull our ace, you can't do it half way and save arms for game 3 as well. That cost us a run that could have been precious), over-subbing for pinch runners and slicing and dicing the lineup, etc...
It wasn't JJ's best game at all...he seemed to be unsure (the Bannister for Crawford sub was the most telling), and our situational hitting was for shit.
Yet we still won. I don't buy this "team out of nowhere that is playing out of their minds on a hot streak" stuff. Yes, our staff is dealing. But maybe the west coast and PAC is just that tough. I think our narrative is more like "our hot pitching has covered a sudden outage of small ball/timely hitting that was our trademark and we can still play much better, so we aren't some cute story. We aren't Fresno State 2008. We are Arizona, 4 time National Champs, best team overall in the PAC and the west, and we want #5." ESPN is going to try to put us in the "plucky overachiever" box, and yes, we are overachieving based on expectations. But we are a national contender with talent and history, and it is not our fault the NCAA relies upon a ranking index that is best used in a national game when college baseball is largely regional. RPI is flawed at its best, but in college baseball it is junk, and a self-fulfilling prophecy, and maybe we should have paid attention when we opened with a series win at a good (down, but good) Rice team, or beat CSF, or handled an underrated Hawaii team on the island with ease, or when we went on our run in conference. Ultimately, we could not overcome that bizarre Utah weekend, but we were #3 in the PAC, high RPI despite regional bias in the model, and had done everything we could do OOC.
Not saying this isn't an amazing story, or this team hasn't played better than its individual parts...but we are not all that different from the 19 teams ranked in the top 15 from the SEC. And even with our offense scuffing to find timely hitting, spreading 6 runs out with almost 20 hits, we just handed the SEC #1/#2 they ass at home.

Re: 2016 Season thread
A consistent theme pre-tournament was how west coast baseball is "weak". Those words actually came out of Holiday's mouth, that the perception is that west coast baseball is "weak", despite teams Tucson or points west having won 5 of the last 10 titles. So, how is this RPI-dominated seeding working out?
National seeds #6 and #7 are out. There is no national seed in an advantage position in the super regionals...#1 Florida, #2 Louisville, and #8 LSU are all down 1-0 and have to win two in a row to advance. National seeds #3 Miami, #4 Texas A&M, and #5 Texas Tech are all facing winner-take-all game 3's, aTm and TTU after losing their first game. Clemson, NS #7, is out, as is #6 MSU. SEC power South Carolina is down 1-0 to Oklahoma State.
The SEC got 7 teams in. All 7 teams are either eliminated or facing an elimination game next. USC, LSU, and Florida are down 1-0 and needing 2 in a row to advance. The ACC got 10 teams in...all but FSU are either gone or face an elimination game (BC vs Miami has to have a winner, so the ACC gets one there).
Of 64 teams in this tournament, only 10 are west of Campbell Avenue. 15%. None of these 10 teams hosted a regional or super regional. 12.5% (us) of the CWS will be guaranteed from this region, and if UCSB wins one more game in two chances, 25% of the CWS will be from a region called "weak", all seeded 2 or lower, none hosing a regional.
So, defining the west coast of baseball as Tucson and all points west...the NCAA determined this region was not worthy of a single host/#1 seed. The narrative at ESPN is that west coast baseball is "weak", or down. The ACC had one less team in the tournament than the PAC has teams competing in the entire conference. Yet 5 of the last 10 titles, 6 of the last 12, are from the small percentage of D1 schools from this region. I call this dominance...Less than 20% of the nation's teams are from this region, yet this region holds 50% of the titles from the last 10 year look back (or 12). None of this region's teams were considered worthy of hosting, and the ACC had as many teams as this entire slice of geography. Yet this definition of "west" baseball will have at least one and the odds favor two of the 8 participants in the CWS, despite having to play on the road in both regional and super regional.
I declare the minor Carolina schools to be honorary west coast teams...East Carolina and Coastal Carolina are the only other schools in the Supers who could potentially make the CWS without hosting either a regional or super.
Go BC/UCSB/FSU/CCU/ECU/TCU/OK ST!

Nice posts evcat. Some of the best read we have had on here. I really liked the first post speaking to the cats
Seems to me the NCAA is really trying to promote college baseball in other regions. They seem to be stepping all over themselves especially in the ACC footprint, save Miami historically.
Cats have a decent chance and like you said, are better than they appear

ESPN benefits from the SEC and ACC schools higher rankings in baseball because of the television contracts. If we see their site and watch their coverage, it is like the PAC12 doesn't even exist.
Re: 2016 Season thread
Great pair of posts evcat! The ACC/SEC narrative is really tiring, and unfortunate that it spread from football to basketball to baseball (hell and softball with SEC).
Re: 2016 Season thread
UCSB with a walk off grand slam vs Louisville to go to Omaha. Win 4-3. Unbelievable. Pinch hitter, 26 at bats all season long, vs Louisville's stud closer, 1st round pick.
And the home plate ump got stuck in the dog pile at the plate
