Good luck to Brandon. I still think about what would have been if he didn't hurt his foot. Hope he's another guy we can point to as an NBA success story soon.
He would have left last year

After winning the national championship, I don't see why he would have come back this year.

Not sure who advised him to do that since he is off the draft charts, but a true Wildcat and always represented the UA well.

God, is that you again?

Yeah I don't see how staying another year would have done anything other than help him move up and into the first couple rounds, but....he was obviously itching to go since last year and the decision isn't surprising.

I wonder if he'll end up in the D-League or if he'll head overseas.
It's long past time to bring this back to the court, let's do it with a small update:

I wish him the best with this but your one year away from your degree to most likely not get looked over at the draft and sign as a free agent. I just don't agree with decision but I wish him the best for sure

I always enjoyed watching Ashley's post game interviews. He always appeared thoughtful and intelligent to me. Quite refreshing. Good luck, Bash.

Nothing ia guaranteed and he has his work cut out for him, but if Grant Jerrett can get a cup of coffee in the league and get that contract there is no reason Bash cant.

I actually like Atlanta as a better fit for him.

Lakers have Randle, drafted Nance, and are trying to sign either Love, Aldridge, or Monroe.

Hawks might be losing Millsap. But even if not, they could use some depth up front, and Ashley fits their style of big.

I think he has better shot of making the Hawks roster as well.

Especially after losing DeMarre Carroll, there's definitely room for Ashley to develop and earn some solid minutes.

Brandon Ashley reaches agreement with the Dallas Mavericks

July 25, 2015 @ 10:41 am

Shams Charania @ShamsCharania

Dallas has reached agreement with undrafted Arizona PF Brandon Ashley on a partially guaranteed multi-year deal, league sources tell RealGM.

I dont know the contract details yet, but this is still a smart move for both parties. NBA teams can sign up to 20 players, but only have 15 roster spots to give out as early as the end of October (before the season starts). By giving Ashley a partially guaranteed deal, even if he doesnt make the NBA roster, they can still pay him ABOVE what they could by offering a D-League contract. This is somewhat similar to what Grant Jerrett did, but in reverse.

Basically, Dallas can pay him $X guaranteed to come to camp. If he doesnt make the roster, this gives Dallas the option of keeping him in their development system and paying him his D-League salary with their affiliate (Texas Legends) + what the partial guarantee was on the contract he just signed. Its a win-win for both parties.

Finally, its another reason why I keep harping on D-League expansion. This should be happened more often, but there are only 18 D-League teams with direct NBA affiliates.
"Plus, why would I go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros."

Guess he finally got his motor running.

Always good for the program to get players into the league, even if it takes a few seasons between Arizona and the NBA.

Good luck kid! do your thing 8-)

Ex-Cat Ashley takes 2nd shot at moving up to NBA

ORLANDO, Fla. — Brandon Ashley wasn’t drafted a year ago when he chose to leave Arizona after his junior year, and after time in the NBA D-League and in Germany, he’s making a second run at the NBA.

The 21-year-old forward had a promising start Saturday, getting 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Dallas Mavericks’ entry in the NBA Summer League, where he’ll play five games this week, hoping to land an invite to preseason camp.

“The decision I made last year is a decision I would make again, for the simple fact that I do feel like I’ve grown so much,” the 6-foot-9, 230-pound prospect said. “That’s not a knock on Coach (Sean) Miller at all. I just feel like you can learn things differently, and to experience the world a little bit has helped me.”

A year ago, Ashley played with the Hawks in Summer League, earning a shot with the Mavericks, but he played sparingly in seven preseason games, averaging just 1.1 points in 12 minutes per game off the bench.

After being cut, he went to the D-League’s Texas Legends, averaging 14.8 points and 6.8 rebounds, then in March went to play for Alba Berlin in the German League.

“D-League was great. That’s probably where I made the vast majority of my improvement,” he said. “I was under a great coach in Nick Van Exel and it was good to be under someone who genuinely cared about my well-being and getting me to the next level, helping develop a lot.”

Ashley had never been overseas, so Germany was an experience on and off the court — he

didn’t learn to say more than “thank you” and “you’re welcome,” but felt “almost at home” playing basketball in Berlin.

In his second stint with Dallas, he’s in a familiar system with teammates he knows well, and he’s made a good impression on Bob MacKinnon, who’s coaching the Mavericks in Summer League this week.

“We’re trying to see if he’d be a good stretch 4 (power forward) in our league,” he said. “I think that’s where his future is. He’s long, he’s athletic, he can really shoot the ball. He’s a very good defender off the ball, needs to get a little stronger, but as he matures, that’ll come. He’s very coachable, he wants to learn and get better. He’s someone who I think has a very good future.”

Ashley is working on the “stretch” part of that position, showing he can step out against bigger defenders and consistently hit the outside shot, as he showed in D-League, hitting 39 percent off his 3s.

“I think my shooting has improved, though I didn’t really show it today,” he said of an 0-for-4 debut beyond the arc Saturday. “I’ve become a much better shooter. It’s a lot faster game, and I’ve learned not to rush things and take my time.”
