Getting out of dodge while he can. Dead duck president will be hiring a new AD for the next president. Not a good situation
No way he could ever pull Miller to Bama......right?

On a different note, is this the first and only story Hansen has ever broken?

Re: Greg Byrne new Alabama AD
Any more decommits? Shit.
He has built a strong base here tho...I think we will be in nice position to hire a new AD with our hoops program and the big donations turned into the Lowell-Stevens and academic center.
I'd be scared shitless if I was Richrod, tho

Great appreciation for everything, but as unexpected as getting swatted by a bookshelf across the head.

Sad. Knew it would happen one day....new AD will have to hire a new football coach (probably/possibly). Plus be strong to keep Miller happy. It's a scary position.
Re: Greg Byrne new Alabama AD
I would think Chris Del Conte will be one guy they will be interested in replacing GB. Having him here for 7 years was more than I expected.

That guy from USF might be a candidate as well.

Wow, this was a real surprise. With all the Texas talk and then now Bama.
At least he won't have to worry about growing a football program.
Congrats GB, you've earned it. Thanks for all you've done for us.
If Miller doesn't get to the FF in the next 1-2 years, I can imagine he'll be next to leave. Cloudy skies ahead for the CATS AD.

Byrne did a great job while here. Football is king nowadays and Bama is as good as it gets.

Brad Allis saying Harlan and Del Conte could be the leading candidates. Here is Harlan's bio.

Someone fire up the AD search thread and requisite flight tracker (although AD searches probably aren't as fun to follow)

Re: Greg Byrne new Alabama AD
Here's a contrarian view: Sean Miller was already hired here before Greg Byrne started and our football program is still a steaming pile of shit. Byrne seemed like a great guy with a real positive attitude that worked hard, but really what did he accomplish?

If one of the blue bloods came after him, he'd be gone. I could see him at Syracuse as well.Irish27 wrote:Yes. He has everything here, a top-10 program and can recruit any kid he wants.Beachcat97 wrote:Is it really so hard to see Miller leaving for another job?
He won't leave right away. It would disrupt his family too much. But in a few more years? Especially if he keeps getting close but no cigar in Tucson?

Re: Greg Byrne new Alabama AD
Not by the norms of how long coaches stay in jobs. But in terms of the law that people tend to leave only for better jobs, yes, it really is hard to see it. He isn't going to Duke or Kentucky. And the prospect of UNC has plummeted due to the state of the state. So be reasonable, not trollerific.Beachcat97 wrote:Is it really so hard to see Miller leaving for another job?

Completely changed the way the AD communicates and engages with fans.elriop20 wrote:Here's a contrarian view: Sean Miller was already hired here before Greg Byrne stared and our football program is still a steaming pile of shit. Moved baseball to Hi Corbett and hired a guy who took them to the finals.
Guided the NEZ roll-out.
Hired a women's basketball coach who by all accounts is going to turn it around.
Made us all forget about the Livengood era.
Not to mention that even though the football program sucks now, the guy he hired did take us to a PAC-12 championship game and Fiesta Bowl.

Re: Greg Byrne new Alabama AD
From an operational point of view, fundraising for the new football facilities, and moving baseball to Hi Corbett which sparked a national title. From a hiring perspective, RR is really his only hire that didn't turn out. New soccer coach brought that program back from the dead to a tourney birth, obviously Jay Johnson and the CWS, and there's more excitement around women's basketball than at any other time since 2004. There was an article when JJ was hired that listed every hire GB had, but I can't seem to find it.elriop20 wrote:Here's a contrarian view: Sean Miller was already hired here before Greg Byrne started and our football program is still a steaming pile of shit. Alabama football made a 47 million dollar profit in 2016 and 104 million revenue. I assume they aren't scared to pay a little.azgreg wrote:Bama must be paying a shit ton because he's walking out on 3.5 mil.

Re: Greg Byrne new Alabama AD
By biggest concern is not wondering if GB was good or marginal but how can we pull any decent candidate given the fact the AWH is a dead duck president.
In one respect I guess you get a pass with RR and his performance but you won't be the hand picked person of the new president. Tough situation and really bad timing

Re: Greg Byrne new Alabama AD
Shelton picked Byrne and was only around for what? A year of Byrne's tenure? I wouldn't be concerned about the relationship about the new AD and prez, that'll work itself out. Hart can not hire the new AD though solely due to incompetence.
Re: Greg Byrne new Alabama AD
LMAO over Syracuse. Why not say Pitt, too.Beachcat97 wrote:If one of the blue bloods came after him, he'd be gone. I could see him at Syracuse as well.Irish27 wrote:Yes. Not sure we lose him anywhere in college, UNC included. Top 5 grossing program with no football is king attitude, no battles for recruits in region outside of UCLA, no pending NCAA issues. And UNC likely to look in the family. He'd be very interested and we know that but every year he is out here he gets further from that.
Arizona fans seem to think we are vulnerable as sport. Yet we have had two non-interim basketball coaches in the last 34 years. While successful
Re: Greg Byrne new Alabama AD
As our friend 97cats would say, Byrne is a perfect fit at Alabama.

Re: Greg Byrne new Alabama AD
If Arizona is the bridge from Mississippi State to the department top football program in the country, there will be a ton of strong candidates for this job.
Re: Greg Byrne new Alabama AD
Great points. Totally forgot about baseball although I wouldn't necessarily give Byrne the credit for the championship.Chicat wrote:Completely changed the way the AD communicates and engages with fans.elriop20 wrote:Here's a contrarian view: Sean Miller was already hired here before Greg Byrne stared and our football program is still a steaming pile of shit.
