I won't cry over Alford leaving, I cringe at the Earl Watson to ucla inevitability.

I find that disrespectful. Can't they wait until the season ends? If Alford would take the position now UCLA would kick him out, like Bill Frieder at Michigan when they won the national championship.MrBug708 wrote:Someone is reporting that Indiana has offered Alford a contract and Adidas is going to pay the buyout. I do think it's funny though that we've gone from "please take him" to "I cringe at his possible replacement" all in the span of a year...

Re: Coaching Searches 2017
Indiana would have to be completely stupid, or unaware of the fact that Compton Magic gifts are the only reason Alford has a job at this very moment
Re: Coaching Searches 2017
You should have said Lamar Ball. Leaf is a very nice piece, but without Lonzo, we probably aren't in the dance.

Saw mention that Jason hart might go up to UW, leaving SC. That's a huge loss for the Trojans if it happena

Leno moment. Sounds like Boeheim wasn't ready to go out and got boxed in by his earlier commitment to go.

UCLA deserves the headache of looking for a new coach after the hell the Bruin fanbase (looking at you Bruins Nation!) gave him on a number of fronts. Even if Alford is indeed a weasel.MrBug708 wrote:I won't cry over Alford leaving, I cringe at the Earl Watson to ucla inevitability.

The guy was handed the keys to a team that had Jordan Adams, Kyle Anderson, Tony Parker, Zach Lavine, Normal Powell, and the Wear twins and could only stick around in the top 25 polls for 5 of 18 polls. Finished three games back of Arizona at 12-6. He was handed 13-seed Tulsa and then 12-seed Stephen F Austin before losing in the sweet 16.
Year 2: Isaac Hamilton, freshman phenom Kevin Looney, Tony Parker, Norman Powell and his kid. Finished 4th in the conference at 11-7. 1 week in top 25 (after starting 4-0 against four scumbags). Beat 6-seed SMU on an blown goaltending call off a Bryce Alford 3 that was a foot short of the rim, then handed 14-seed UAB before losing in the sweet 16.
Year 3: Parker, Welsh, Bryce, Hamilton, and handed Holiday because of his brothers. Finishes the season 15-17 and 6-12 (10th) in the Pac-12.
Not to mention his out of control kid and nepotism, up to this point, Alford is a failure. And then all of a sudden:
Year 4: Bryce, Hamilton, Holiday, Welsh, then gets handed one of the best freshman point guards of all time because of daddy/connection with one of his assistants and TJ Leaf due to Compton Magic's falling out with Arizona and lord knows what else. Finishes 3rd behind Arizona and Oregon in the Pac-12. Great season, but kind of disappointing to finish behind an Arizona team that was missing Trier/adjusting to his return for most of the conference season. I'd also argue that given how gifted this UCLA team is, Alford underachieved and is selling them short because of their generally crappy defense. There are probably more than just a handful of coaches who would have had UCLA undefeated. He can salvage things with a final four run (and do a bit more w a title), but anything less would be underachieving with this team. The dude has been basically handed golden opportunity after golden opportunity and has done nothing with it up through this point.

I think most of this Alford talk is a smokescreen. I dont think they get Donovan either, but I cant see it happening.
I also don't see why Jay Wright would leave Nova

Don't dismiss it. I have inside sources that say Sean Miller will fill out his Indiana staff by hiring John Calipari as lead recruiter, Gregg Marshall as a bench coach, Tony Bennett as pack line teacher and Mike D'Antoni as offensive coordinator.UAEebs86 wrote:Scheer retweeted some tool who thinks Indiana is going to hire CSM as it's head coach and Archie as an assistant. Nevada supposedly really took care of Musselman, plus he's going to have a really good team next year. So it might not have been that Cal sucks.az91 wrote:I heard that the Montana coach turned Cal down too. On the other hand though, I'm not sure there's another athletic department in the nation that has had as dysfunctional a relationship with the head coaches of their revenue sports as Cal.

Re: Coaching Searches 2017
Musselman may be judging Cal against what can open up next year as well. It isn't just whether Cal is better than Nevada, it's that if he's confident next year goes well, he may be in line for a better P5 job than Cal come next spring.Chicat wrote:Nevada supposedly really took care of Musselman, plus he's going to have a really good team next year. I could see Texas being Texas and canning Shaka if he has another disappointing year. There are rumblings around Matta.
Heck, wait to see if Alford jumps and there might be a vastly better P5 job open this year.

It's a job in a fertile recruiting ground and has history. The remainder is pretty unremarkable. There's worse, but Georgetown is probably closer to NC State than Indiana in terms of this year's offseason vacancies.Chicat wrote:I have no idea if that's a good job, but my initial feeling is "not even close".

I agree. It isn't a bad job but it is no longer a top 10-15 type job.
