I still think our team can be a juggernaut next year if we get 2 of the 3 of Bowen , Trier, and Duval.
So basically just get Duval because we will get one of the other 2.

Had to chuckle at title: "7-footer with a JUMPER!"
Whoever heard of such a thing?
Have to say he looked more agile than in some high school footage I've seen.

He's still physically developing. He has a big, powerful frame and has been filling it out.gumby wrote:Had to chuckle at title: "7-footer with a JUMPER!"

Physically, he's the size of Greg Oden with the potential to be more agile. Growing into his body and refining his footwork is one of the next steps. I would hope that getting into a good S+C program at Arizona will have him around 7'1 260 and developing the agility even more.

Re: DeAndre Ayton
Unlike the rest of you, I don't drive around the country visiting high school gyms with a clipboard and a thermos. And never trust somebody who says something based on highlights, but based on those highlights, he looks like more of a 4 than a 5, and in spite of his back-to-the-basket moments and that sky hook which is slightly better than Kareem's. I agree with gumby about his agility. Looks like that comes at the expense of power. As a high school senior, Aaron Gordon would have broken him in half. I can envision Miller sending him to the bench for lapses of effort. But I don't see anything that contradicts his top ranking. He's going to be special.
Re: DeAndre Ayton
I think of him as a 7 foot Aaron Gordon. Not refined, but with super physical skills to impact a game in a number of ways.
The main difference is motor...AG was pedal to the floor all the time and Ayton is known to check out mentally at times. Hoping this is a bored-with-high-school-play thing and he will be engaged by Sean to get the most out of him. Because he is as pure a physical specimen as we have had on the floor, especially for his size. And he can shoot, which adds a wrinkle. But he doesn't have a normal post game.
Then again, the NBA has gone away from pure post play as it is rated as one of, if not the, most inefficient offensive plan to score. The points per possession in the NBA are much higher from drives, 3 point shots, mid range games, pick and roll and pops and other methods than the old traditional post game. The NBA has really gone away from the iso, back down post scoring option.

I don't have a thermos, but have seen a few of his full games on tv. He has the body of a 5, but likes to play like a stretch 4. He struggled inside a bit against Mo Bamba, but Bamba's arms are 8 feet long.Longhorned wrote:Unlike the rest of you, I don't drive around the country visiting high school gyms with a clipboard and a thermos. I agree about his motor, but think he is more powerful than you credit him for. He's filled out his frame a lot in the last year and he's probably got more to go. I think he'd move Dusan around if he wanted to.
He looks less powerful than he is because of his tendency to float and not be aggressive. If he had Aaron's mindset, he would ragdoll people with his physical tools. Right now, he plays finesse and hangs around the perimeter too much. Miller's attitude toward nastiness will be good for him.

DeAndre Ayton’s most recent measurement at the 2016 Nike Hoops Summit listed him at 7-feet tall, 243 pounds with a 7'5 wingspan. Those are ideal dimensions for a traditional center, but Ayton has never seemed particularly interested in being that.
Ayton would rather face-up than try to score in the post. He’s more comfortable guarding the wing than protecting the rim. While he only hit 25 percent of the 57 threes he took last summer on Nike’s EYBL circuit, his shooting stroke is smooth and the ball looks good coming out of his hands. He was hitting jumpers all over the court at Monday’s practice.
Playing alongside fellow five-star center Brandon McCoy on the summer circuit for Cal Supreme afforded Ayton the opportunity to step away from the paint. He might be in a similar situation at Arizona next year, too, with senior-to-be Dusan Ristic already installed at center. He even invoked the name of the most hallowed unicorn of all when he was asked he who patterns his game after.
“Actually to be honest, I’m in love with [Kristaps] Porzingis, though,” he told Scout last May. “We have the same game to be honest. Same exact game. He can shoot. He can put the ball on the floor and go to the rim and he can post up.”

Interesting comparison.

Re: DeAndre Ayton
There was a play at the McD's where he just threw the boxing out defender aside with a quick arm bar and dunked a miss...it showed both his ability to attack the rim and his natural strength, which is amazing for a kid who has not been in the weight room.

That's the biggest criticism of him, that he should be slaughtering people constantly but isn't. If he had the attacking mindset, he has NBA hall of fame ceiling.EVCat wrote:There was a play at the McD's where he just threw the boxing out defender aside with a quick arm bar and dunked a miss...it showed both his ability to attack the rim and his natural strength, which is amazing for a kid who has not been in the weight room.

Ranking college basketball's best players for 2017-18
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basket ... all-season" target="_blank7. DeAndre Ayton, Arizona Wildcats
Ayton has been described as "the highest-rated signee in Arizona basketball history," which is saying something given coach Sean Miller's track record in recruiting. The 7-footer grabbed 11 rebounds (including nine offensive boards) in just 20 minutes in the McDonald's All American Game last week. As a senior at Hillcrest Prep, Ayton averaged a 21-16 double-double.

DeAndre Ayton next in line as Arizona Wildcats look to replace Lauri Markkanen
By Bruce Pascoe Arizona Daily Star Apr 11, 2017 Updated 8 hrs ago
Before the McDonald’s All-American Game two weeks ago, Ayton discussed what he brings:
“I see myself more in the post as well as coming outside and being more of a threat as well. (Markkanen) programmed himself to be outside a little too much for me. I think I can start inside and be a threat, get more physical inside and step outside for 3s. …
Defense that will be a mix of protecting the rim and playing farther from the basket.
“But I think I’ve got to work on my rim protection. Sometimes, I’m like, ‘Oh, that dude can jump. I don’t know if I should jump with him.’ Sometimes I second-guess it. It depends who it is.”

That last play is why Ayton is considered the better prospect. Bamba can be bodied up by bigger guys.
That wingspan is absurd though. He's gonna be one of the best shot blockers in the NBA in 4 years.
