June 6, 1944-70th Anniversary

This one kinda crept up on me being so busy working down in Tombstone etc. Rather incredible to think it has been 70 years since arguably the most important and decisive day in modern human history.

They had a pretty impressive ceremony with a bunch of vets at the WW2 memorial in DC this morning. I'm stuck here at work unfortunately but a couple of the guys I work with were able to go and they said it was an awesome experience.

this anniversary, the 70th, will probably be the last one where there is a sizable amount of veterans around that can talk about that day and go to events like the ones being hosted in France etc. by the 80th anniversary your average veteran will be well into his 100s. i'm definitley appreciating all the veterans today.

Always appreciate SD86 posting WW2 things. I agree this will probably be the last time they gather in mass so this was a special and solemn occasions.

I heard the one guy who was in the first wave say they were told they would probably die but they went anyway. Such courage and resolve

Bernard's Great Escape: D-Day veteran, 89, who sneaked off from care home after staff told him he couldn't go to 70th anniversary commemorations makes it to Normandy against all the odds... AGAIN!

Bernard Jordan, 89, sneaked out of The Pines care home, Hove, yesterday
D-Day veteran had been told by staff that he could not travel to Normandy
Donning war medals under a raincoat, he joined his comrades on a coach
Sussex Police were called and launched search for former mayor of Hove
But care home later received call from a younger veteran reassuring them Mr Jordan was safe and would return home after the celebrations were over
Tracked down in France he said he wanted to see the 'show' and asked if he would be in trouble told ITV: 'I might be, but I hope not.'
