The "Rey?" sub-forum is closing
Hey everyone,
I just wanted to make a post here to announce that our "Rey?" sub-forum (aka the hot or not forum) shall be closing / removed from the rest of the site.
I'm going to include some quotes here from our staff regarding the forum (anonymously, but if the people who stated these opinions want to add more, they can feel free):
1) "It isn’t in use, and as a forum we felt it limited growth options."
2) "I enjoyed that thread, participated in it... but I now it makes me feel a little sick."
3) "Feel like a POS for my participation in some of those discussions."
The 1st quote is perhaps a more practical reason for shutting down the sub-forum, but is still true. It doesn't see enough use to warrant having it, especially when juxtaposed with our overarching desire to grow this community. And yes, we do want to grow this community.
The 2nd and 3rd quotes reflect some of my own personal thoughts as well. The sub-forum had its time and place, but that time is no longer now and that place is no longer here. I consider it a bit of personal growth to feel this way, and hope you all can feel the same way.

It's long past time to bring this back to the court, let's do it with a small update:

Good.
With all this sexual assaults going on in politics and Hollywood, and the just sickening assault on gymnasts by that doctor, the sexual exploitation of women is really starting to bother me.

This was the exact thought that made all of us MODS want to shut it down.Merkin wrote:Good.

To explain us rather than excuse us, it was founded on long, long tradition that pre-dated the sub-forum untold eons.
But this is a site used predominantly by men, and men need to take the lead in ending the objectification of women.

If you believe that pornography is also culpable in said objectification, that lead we need to take is going to be difficult for many--especially on the internet, which was first popularized by untold examples of the objectification of women.Longhorned wrote:To explain us rather than excuse us, it was founded on long, long tradition that pre-dated the sub-forum untold eons.

I'd have to think about that. But beyond pornography: One thing that I do realize now, and which I didn't before, is that the question of whether female celebrities themselves are actively projecting "hotness" (or notness) has no bearing on men's responsibility to push back against the culture of objectifying women that ties into how women wish to project themselves.catgrad97 wrote:If you believe that pornography is also culpable in said objectification, that lead we need to take is going to be difficult for many--especially on the internet, which was first popularized by untold examples of the objectification of women.Longhorned wrote:To explain us rather than excuse us, it was founded on long, long tradition that pre-dated the sub-forum untold eons.

I suspect there's part of me and other men that just hasn't grown up.

Our society seems to reinforce that "guys don't have to grow up", our toys just get much more expensive. Well maybe it's time we do.

I agree with closing it. I contributed a bit and enjoyed it, but it past time to move on.

For the record, I find nothing necessarily distasteful about the forum. But, that doesn’t mean it’s still in good taste. Regardless of right/wrongs, or the morality, simply put, it simply isn’t needed, or, ultimately, useful.
