Meet Stanley Johnson, the Best Two-Way Prospect in the 2015 NBA Draft

Arizona's incoming freshman Stanley Johnson fits the bill, and he may be the best two-way player to hear his name called in June.
The 6'7" wing from Fullerton, California, is a strong, dauntless competitor who offers multidimensional offense and stout defensive versatility. He won a record four California state titles at Mater Dei High School, as he constantly showed the knack for adapting to fill his team's needs.

Stanley Johnson is going to man handle opposing shooting guards. Just physically crush them.

It's going to be insane. I was looking at the matchup with Gonzaga and its going to be fun watching him make Gary Bell's life a living hell, and of course pretty much everybody else on the schedule. Wish he could switch and guard Ski Booker, I don'tl ike that guy.97cats wrote:100% agree with this statement, especially on the glass.ZONACAT wrote:Stanley Johnson is going to man handle opposing shooting guards. Can't wait to see this team running at full speed. Don't think scoring will be a problem. Miller thinks 4-5 guys will be in double figures. When they tighten up on defense, don't blink.

Stanley will crush the typical 2, but does he have the speed to handle a smaller quicker guard?
And just for giggles:
Who do you think turns out a better defender, Nick Johnson Year 3 or Stanley Johnson Year 1?

Re: Stanley Johnson
Not sure if there are many small forwards in the country he won't dominate. 245 pounds of muscle? Crazy! But shooting guards? If they play man, someone has to cover either Johnson or Jefferson. Good freakin' luck! This team may face more zones than Arizona basketball has ever seen.ZONACAT wrote:Stanley Johnson is going to man handle opposing shooting guards. Just physically crush them.

Re: Stanley Johnson
We will shred zones. Too many good passers and active players on this team to zone us for long stretches.Catstatic wrote:Not sure if there are many small forwards in the country he won't dominate. 245 pounds of muscle? Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?
Re: Stanley Johnson
tough to body up and block out this yrs AZ team in the man to man let alone out of the zone -- I foresee a lot of second chance points.
Re: Stanley Johnson
I have to think that most opposing coaches are going to challenge their players to stop their man. Zones from teams that run man will be a sign of defeat like Duke last year. Man that was sweet.

Many more shooters this season. TJ should have fun finding the open guys. I'm guessing Rondae's summer work will pay off big time. Stanley J has the potential for making things happen. I can see Miller smiling now.

Business, or more exactly finance should be required classes for these soon to be millionaires.
There have been a few real majors though. Wasn't Chris Rogers a dual major of some sort?

His offensive skill set is going to be fun to watch. He's on of the more physical players I remember at UofA since maybe Fendi, but obviously way more talented. Sort of reminds me of James Harden *barf*

Kevin Calabro, former voice of the Sonics, had an interesting comparison: Truck Robinson. SJ is better on the perimeter. Truck better on the boards and inside. Both beasts with a lot of skills.

For the gamblers
SJ o/u points is 14.5 PPG and rebounds is 8.5 a game.
RHJ is at 11.5 PPG and 7 RPG.

More likely an affectation. It all started with Iverson, who wore one on his shooting arm when he had bursitis. After the bursitis went away, he kept wearing it, and pretty soon everybody else started wearing them.
Teams from the 1980s would have no chance against their sleeved moderns.

Re: Stanley Johnson
SJ's right where Miller wants him to be..
(97's phrase)
“Stanley was terrific on defense,” Miller said.
Freshman Johnson becoming force on defense
6 hours ago • By Bruce Pascoe Arizona Daily Star
But it’s not all about the numbers. To Miller, it’s also about the way he’s getting those numbers.
“A lot of Stanley Johnson’s plays are happening more through the confines of team play,” Miller said. “You expect a freshman to continue to grow and understand what we’re doing here and implement himself into it. That’s a credit to Stanley for learning and working.”
“I feel on this team if you’re locked in on defense, balls will come to you,” Johnson said. “When I play locked-in defense, offense comes a lot easier.”
Actually, they did come to him and his teammates. Late in the first half, Johnson picked off a Michigan pass and turned it into a dunk. As a team, Arizona turned 12 Michigan turnovers into 17 points.
Defense, turned fun.
“When we start smelling blood like that, we start to keep kills (three straight defensive stops) coming, keep stops coming and when we get out and run we’re at our best,” Johnson said. “I don’t think many teams can get back fast enough with our size and shooting to prepare for our offense if we can get stops on the defensive end.”
Johnson has helped Arizona hold its past four opponents under 40 percent shooting and generate a defensive efficiency mark of 88.9 (points allowed per 100 possessions) for the season, which is ninth best in Division I. Arizona allowed 88.5 points per 100 possessions last season, the best rate in the country.
“We’re a very good defensive team,” Miller said. “I don’t know if we’re along the lines of last season — last season we just took that next step. But we’ll see. Maybe we can develop into that. We don’t know yet. It’s still mid-December. We have a lot of different players contributing and they’re contributing on the defensive end.”
