NBA Looking at Free Throw Reform

The concept was this: A player fouled in the act of shooting or in a penalty situation would attempt only a single free throw. If that player was shooting a 2-point shot or in a penalty situation at the time of the foul, the free throw attempt would be worth two points. If that player was fouled in the act of launching a 3-point shot, he’d go to the line for a single shot worth three points.

As long as floppers get penalized.

A 80% FT shooter shooting one FT has a 80% chance to get the first FT for 3 points, while he would normally make all 3 51% of the time.

I have serious doubts. Test it in the D-League. I'd worry that it slows down the game by forcing players to use more of the shot clock to get a breath of air.

Meh, maybe only for 2 point shots or dead-ball fouls. 3 free throws should forever be a part of the game

Id like to hear their justification for the idea. What's broke about free throw structure as presently adopted? How will this work to change the game positively? What potential negatives or consequences are there that can actually do more harm than good?

I don't like it. To much temptation for increased flopping, too much temptation for increased intentional fouls on poor shooters, and no real problem in current system is being fixed, because whatever time is saved in shooting fewer total FTs per foul will be offset by more individual attempts, and the worse offender of time is stopping play/lining up/shooting the first FT, not the coat-tailed 20 seconds for the second.

Seems like change for change.

Now, if you want to make technical FTs worth 2 points automatic if made, sure.

Remember when you could handcheck and opposing teams still scored 100+ a night?

i don't like it. guarantees more points. definitely would like more tightly controlled foul calls and less flopping.

My thought is that if you foul someone and they get the ball back that fouling at the end of the game crap will come to an end.

Just eliminate the foul shot. If you foul, it's automatic points.

You know what I mean. Say a team is down by 10 points with a minute to play. They always foul, give 2 free throws, and then get the ball and shoot a 3. Takes 6 hours to play the last min. If it was setup that if you foul someone they get 1 free throw and possession it would eliminate that crap.
