Last week my kids were off Monday for MLK, Tuesday they had to come home two hours early due to an ice storm, Wednesday school was canceled because of the ice, then Friday they had a two hour delay because of sub-zero temps.

Next week they are predicting a blizzard on Monday and then wind chills 30-40 below zero by Wednesday. So I’m guessing we are going to have an equally crazy week as far as them having to stay home.

The sun is out and the wind isn’t too bad right now and as I just walked outside I thought to myself.... “Hmm, not too bad out...”

It’s 14 degrees.

These temps in the Midwest are crazy. Makes me worried about the homeless population and what about the people that walk to work or have to wait for the bus in those places? They're risking their lives to commute to work.

I have no idea if they even have homeless there, but even out here in mild climate coastal Cali once the night time temperature drops to 32 degrees, the warming shelters open up.

Many schools and government offices will be closed due to the cold. Hopefully those that take buses to work will have very sympathetic employers. Not really sure if Walmart has a heart though. Not that anyone will be out shopping.

All kinds of businesses are closed the next few days and Chicago is turning the city park field houses into warming centers, so that adds like 60 centers to the 60 that already exist.

That being said, 18 people have already died this winter in Chicago from exposure. That number is likely to go up. Many homeless people don’t like going to shelters or warming centers for fear they will get their things stolen or will be arrested on outstanding warrants.

True. And if you’re a paranoid schizophrenic, the last place you want to be is surrounded by a bunch of strangers in a strange place.

Looks like my kids won’t go back to school until Friday. They are going nuts being cooped up inside.

It is summer in Antarctica.

I’m more impressed by how Chicago’s temps are eclipsing Alaska’s.

When my family was living in Poughkeepsie NY one time I came back to visit around Christmas time. Once it hit 40 degrees my brother took the top down on his convertible.

Once every year or two, an occasion arises where I must go to Flagstaff in the winter.

It is without fail that on these occasions, snow is in the forecast. I don't mind snow when I am hunkered down in the place where it is snowing for a couple of days. But I do not like navigating the mess of crap pavement, traffic, and general roller coaster drops and rises that I-17 presents in said snowy conditions. Especially in my rear wheel drive vehicle.

It never fails...
