Boom! Awesome
Re: Yates fired, Cecil the new DC
So, Cecil as DC and safeties coach? Who coaches LBs?
Re: Yates fired, Cecil the new DC

Looks like Hank Hobson.azgreg wrote:So, Cecil as DC and safeties coach? Who coaches LBs?
Either way this is a great step, but how about benching Tate now?

Re: Yates fired, Cecil the new DC
Well I can’t say I expected that. Nor do I particularly expect any kind of turnaround. It’s about the players, mostly. But as some point you have to do something.
Re: Yates fired, Cecil the new DC
About damn time!
Re: Yates fired, Cecil the new DC
The majority of the board got their wish.
I for one expect very little difference. The primary problem has been recruiting, not coaching.
Chuck is going to inherit the same undersized defensive ends, the same Defensive tackles that can't collapse the pocket, and the same defensive backs that can't cover the average nursing home grandmother who uses a walker.
That being said, Bear Down Chuck!!

Party time! Keep those firings coming!

I know it looks like Sumlin making these changes but have to wonder if Robbins or Heeke stepped in and said you better make some changes quick

Re: Yates fired, Cecil the new DC
I’m pleasantly surprised. Even more surprised that a position coach was as fired also. If I had to guess, the special team coach is the next to go.
Generally defense effort changes after a coordinator change but I don’t expect much of a change this year. The big thing is that it allows Sumlin to get a jump on it early.

Can Sumlin fire himself?
I agree with you OSUCat. Special teams coach needs to go.

Re: Yates fired, Cecil the new DC
So Cecil gets a pro rata share for the rest of the year. Probably will get about 200K for the rest of the year I would think. Hobson gets a nice pay increase and a great opportunity. Hope he hits it out of the park.

Re: Yates fired, Cecil the new DC
It took this long...why?
It is absolutely obscene that Marcel Yates is paid $560,000. He had absolutely no basis for an extension in the first place.
Like others have said, even with Cecil in charge, the recruits are still undersized. Getting pushed around on the lines is the giant rut this program may never get out of.

I meant it was originally a two yard contract.
Not sure the best way to go. Arizona probably can’t get a established well performing DC.probably have to go the hot position coach or lower tier teams. San Diego State and Wyoming have top 10 defenses. San Diego State defense did better against UCLA than Arizona.

Re: Yates fired, Cecil the new DC
This is a win win in the big picture. The defense has been a glaring failure for years now and nothing was going to change by riding the status quo.
As a few have said this won't mean a hill of beans this year. We simply are what we have been for years, a undersized, lacking talent , poorly coached and poorly recruited team.
The players wanted Yates to stay because his buddy buddy feel good persona allows the player to be mediocre and keep their jobs.
I doubt Chuck is the answer at DC long-term. Hobson at LB'r is unknown but sounds positive.
Bottom line is Sumlin had to make changes and he has. That's a good thing. The reality is it won't matter this year because we're still a bad, undermanned football team that lacks talent across the board.

Can Cecil recruit or does he even want to?
Not sure the Cats even have a special teams coach. Most programs assign special teams to a position coach due to limits on the size of coaching staffs.

Wow. Here is the ST coach the Cats could have had, but RichRod did not want to lose a position coach: https://utepminers.com/sports/football/ ... inson/1381" target="_blankUAEebs86 wrote:Merkin wrote:Can Cecil recruit or does he even want to?

Re: Yates fired, Cecil the new DC
Besides the fact Chuck has been a lifelong position coach, outside of his one disastrous year as DC in the NFL.
We all love Cecil, he is a UA legend, but there is a reason why he has never made it up the ladder in the coaching ranks. Same with Ricky Hunley.
Recruiting is bad anyway, now it's going to fall off the charts with no DC to recruit for the future. We all saw what happened RichRod told Casteel he didn't have to recruit. Elite defensive players want to know who the DC will be and what schemes the defense will play.

Re: Yates fired, Cecil the new DC
ehh, I don't think recruiting is going to get worse, there are plenty of Mountain West level defensive players out there. Yates was recruiting as a lame duck DC anyway, he was always going to be done when his contract was up at the end of the year.Merkin wrote:Besides the fact Chuck has been a lifelong position coach, outside of his one disastrous year as DC in the NFL.

In other breaking news today, Sumlin just fired himself for cause. 'Cause he agrees he is just a retread crappy coach and Arizona deserves much better than him.

Freaking awesome! Recruiting is in the shitter anyways, don’t know why some are concerned with this?
Keep dropping the hammer, we need recruits and coaches that can actually make them better! I will gladly roll the dice with Chuck after that defensive embarrassment we endured up at the farm. A depleted Stanford OL and we give that guy all day to throw and the holes were large enough my dead grandmother could run through them. Embarrassing.

My bad. Yes, the curb stomping will be brutal. Watching the sc beat down and it’s really nice to see how great Oregon is doing recruiting all the top elite talent out of So Cal. Shit, Herbert’s backup is from Arizona. We can’t even recruit our own elite in state kids. Depressing....ByJoveByJingle wrote:I meant against us. Re: Yates fired, Cecil the new DC
We haven't recruited elite kids from Arizona in decades. For the last 15-20 years pretty much every top 5 kid from Arizona goes to Oregon, Nebraska, Texas A&M, UCLA, USC or Stanford if they're smart. It's just those 6 schools for whatever reason. Literally none go to Arizona or ASU.Sid wrote:My bad. Yes, the curb stomping will be brutal.
