As the crow flies that spot is 5 miles NE of our old house.

He and his family are ok. Their neighborhood was missed but his sister who lives on the east side had some damage to her home. No injuries thankfully.

He’s actually in San Fran on business which is why he didn’t get my early morning frantic texts. Hoo boy did my mind go to some dark places when I didn’t hear back...

Glad your buddy is ok.

Pretty strong tornado (currently rated high EF3 but could change with further surveys) for a seemingly marginal environment. Although, even low end nighttime tornadoes can be pretty devastating depending on the structures in place. If you live in an area with tornadoes, get a weather radio! Lead time means nothing if you don't have a way to get the warning.

My cousin just moved from San Fran to Nashville 2 weeks ago. Luckily she was 7 miles away but strong winds/hail from 1-6AM at her apt complex with no basement/shelter nearby. Horrible what happened there. It was an EF-3?

(From Oh Boy Records)

A Devasting Tornado

A devasting tornado hit Nashville and Central Tennessee in the early morning of March 3rd. Our hearts go out to everyone in the area who lost loved ones, their homes, or were personally affected by the storm. It has been so encouraging to see the community in Nashville come together and start to rebuild. The resilience of Nashville and all of Tennessee will be on full display in the coming days.

The Oh Boy family is all OK. We are safe and no one is hurt, but we are all grieving for those less fortunate and are doing what we can to help. We want to use this email to let our extended family here know how you all can help too.

Below are some resources on how to donate, contribute and volunteer.

How To Help
Our friends at the Nashville Scene and Lightning 100 have both published great overviews of the organizations providing relief. Click Here & Here to read. Below is a list of resources for volunteering, donating and information

SPOTLIGHT ON: Gideon's Army

The Oh Boy Records office is located in North Nashville, which bore the brunt of the tornado's damage. Whole neighborhoods have been laid to waste. At the forefront of rebuilding these neighborhoods is Gideon's Army.

50% of all sales on John Prine's Webstore and Oh Boy Records' Webstore will be donated to Gideon's Army until March 10th.

San Diego is under a winter weather advisory. Got woken up by a hail storm at 1 am. Sounded like all my windows were going to burst with the high winds and hail. 7 flashes of lightning and thunder, which is more than I've heard combined since moving here 11 years ago. I live less than a mile from the beach and five blocks from the bay.

The remains this morning are shown above.

^ my youngest son lives in Pacific Beach and said the weather has been awful, just cold every day.

I live up in northern Santa Barbara county, and it was 37 when I woke up. At least 3 days in a row where the highs have been in the 50's. I pretty much open my house up 365 days a year, but now it's only for an hour or so.

However, we have received more rain in March than the entire rainy season combined before that.

One last day of winter in Tucson. 48 with a scattered sprinkle this morning, probably only upper 50s for a high today. Last time to enjoy it because in 2 days it will be 85

Bring it on.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions ... son-relax/" target="_blank
Our research determined that all the major affected areas in January through early March were in the Northern Hemisphere between 30 and 50 degrees north latitude. And the areas had nearly identical temperatures of 41 to 52 degrees Fahrenheit and low humidity in the weeks before they recorded their first covid-19 death.

Those conditions are similar to the laboratory conditions that maximize survival for seasonal respiratory viruses and are most conducive for transmission. Cooler temperatures are known to increase the survival of respiratory viruses on surfaces, help stabilize (along with low humidity) the aerosol floating in air, and even increase viral replication in some instances.

My colleague/former department head’s mom had her house significantly damaged in Georgia. Twenty five years ago, he and his now deceased dad built the house as his parents’ retirement home and ultimately, final home. It’s a significant architectural work. Thankfully his mom hid in a closet and was unharmed. Hopefully the house can be repaired. Just what we needed in these times: the more normative natural disasters to start joining the party. :?

Using averages to discuss what the weather should be in Spring and Fall is kind of a crapshoot, they are transition times where you can get some large deviations from the average which don't hang around long. It looks like Tucson usually hits 100 for the first time in mid to late May (May 25th is the average over 1895-2019). The earliest was April 19, 1989 and the latest was June 22, 1905. See this page for all of the historical first 100 degree days for Tucson: https://www.wrh.noaa.gov/twc/climate/Tu ... 1st100.php

Down county from me, and LH's old haunts:

For the second consecutive day, Santa Barbara hit a new daily heat record, as sweltering temperatures swept across Santa Barbara County’s South Coast.

A reading of 92 degrees was taken at the Santa Barbara Airport at 3:51 p.m. Thursday, smashing the record for April 23 of 82 degrees set in 1995.

Santa Barbara also beat its heat record Wednesday, topping out at 88 degrees.
