Summer plans during COVID 19
I need to get the hell out of Tucson for a while over the summer.
We want to rent a house somewhere. We are needing cool fresh air, trees, hiking, some sort of nearby lake would be nice and a place I can drive to ( a long drive is not out of the question).
Any suggestions?
Are other's planning on vacationing this summer or hunkering down during this crazy time?
I've never been but we are taking a long look at Taos New Mexico right now.

We're heading up to a house in pinetop in a few weeks for a long weekend. I'd suggest Silver City, wife and I had a great time a few years ago.

I love Silver City! We had a blast there a few years ago. Would certainly go back but we're interested in going somewhere new to us.scumdevils86 wrote:We're heading up to a house in pinetop in a few weeks for a long weekend. I'd suggest Silver City, wife and I had a great time a few years ago.

Taos is high elevation sage, Pinyon/Juniper and Ponderosa pine at the base of the Sangre de Christos. Higher up it's mixed conifer and steep ass pitch. It's beautiful everywhere. I highly recommend it. Check out the Chama area as well as Angel Fire.Alieberman wrote:I need to get the hell out of Tucson for a while over the summer.

Culturally, Taos is a mixture of overpriced art cliques/boutiques and scruffy scrapin' byers. The food will be good in the spendy places, but the good everyday neo Spanish cuisine is down to knowing where to go, and I've forgotten all of that.
We want to head out to some nowhere place and bleach down a hotel room for a week and just hike around in a different biome. It's comin' I tell ya. "We're going' crazy out there at the lake."

I think your best bet might be to rent a motor home and do some dry camping in the woods of your choice. Dolores River up in south western Colorado is amazing.
I am concerned with hotel type options this summer. Just don’t trust the sanitation efforts of other. You could dusenfect a motor home in 30 minutes pretty well I think

Even with my current work situation, I'd love to drag the family down to the Gulf of Mexico and lay on a beach for a week. Probably a pretty low chance of that happening though.

Re: Summer plans during COVID 19
Just had my campsites for a week in Kings Canyon Sequoia cancel. This after the non climbing above 10k on Mount Shasta for much of May which killed my Shasta bid.
But everyone can golf around sac and restaurants and bars are opening this weekend.
Really pissed at the double standard of it all, but I guess it’s hard to really monetize trees. Maybe if they played sports
No person to person transmission have been proven in outdoor air yet.
And I can’t camp. Pissed.

wait, you can golf but you can't camp? That is absurd IMO. At some point you have to trust people won't congregate, especially in the woods of the outdoors

Re: Summer plans during COVID 19
Just got back from 9 days in Coronado. Weather was perfect and we kayaked 12 miles all over the Bay. We even entered the Sea World exhibit as no one was around.
Our bi-annual family reunion was just cancelled in July. We were going to camp in the Grand Canyon, Zion NP, Yellowstone NP and then SE Idaho for 2 weeks. Really, really bummed its not happening. We had 5 days all planned out in Yellowstone. If anyone wants our camp ground reservations let me know haha
I see another Coronado trip and possibly Pinetop. Guys golf trip to Sedona as well.

Yup and state parks aren’t taking reservations until August.
So camping is pretty much dead in a California for the moment.

We did decide on Taos. Going up there in a few weeks. Can't wait. Actually staying in Red River.... right on the base of a ski mountain. The high temps right now are like 73 degrees... Yes!!!!dovecanyoncat wrote:Taos is high elevation sage, Pinyon/Juniper and Ponderosa pine at the base of the Sangre de Christos. Higher up it's mixed conifer and steep ass pitch. Re: Summer plans during COVID 19
My vacation plans are to get my wife who has underlying conditions the fuck out of this state and moved up to Colorado this weekend. Between the smoke and the morons walking around without masks, I’ve had enough of Tucson for now.
May take the scenic route through Utah but I’m sure we’ll still have to avoid tons of unmasked idiots.

Sonoma coast
Yosemite or pass creek in the Tahoe national forest for Labor Day.

Me and the wife are talking about going up to Mesa Verde at the end of the month for our 29th anniversary.
