I wish the boys played defense like that.
Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?

Re: Arizona vs. BYU Wednesday

Post by TheCatInTheHat »

Went to the BYU site for a scouting report. They are showing that the game is scheduled for Wednesday at 12 p.m. Don't have a clue what time zone, but they seem to think it's an early game. Here's how their team shapes up:

G Shaylee Gonzales 5-10 So Gilbert, AZ 17.4 PPG 5.2 RPG .311 3% .753 FT% 59 STL
G Paisley Harding 5-9 Sr Everett, WA 14.6 PPG 2.6 RPG .333 3% .780 FT % 21 STL
F Lauren Gustin 6-1 So UT 11.5 PPG 12.7 RPG .000 3% .688 FT% 22 STL
G Tegan Graham 6-0 Gr New Zealand 8.1 PPG 2.8 RPG .471 3% .667 FT% 12 BLK
C Sara Hamson 6-7 Sr UT 5.2 PPG 3.9 RPG .000 3% .643 FT% 60 BLK
G Maria Albiero 5-8 Sr Brazil 5.1 PPG 2.8 RPG .229 3% .852 FT% 15 STL

So, the 6-7 center with the 60 blocks sticks out, as does the gal from New Zealand shooting almost 50% from behind the arc.

They should've said "Dominate and advance". This was never a game.

So Jeff Judkins is the coach of BYU's women's team. I'd say we owe him one for a game in Salt Lake in 1974 under Jerry Pimm, along with the 1998 NCAA game when he was an assistant under Rick Majerus. Just press them a lot, and maybe play Lauren Ware a little more against their 6-7 giant, and I think we should be alright. Not to jinx, but I caught a little of Texas A&M's game, as they would be the likely opponent in a Sweet Sixteen game. That would be a real challenge. They have a Barkley-esqe 6-4 center named Ciera Johnson who is active, a good passer, and who would be a very difficult matchup down low.

We need to play way better to get to the Elite 8. Texas A&M looked pretty tough.

Seeding

Post by TheCatInTheHat »

Interesting how in the men's bracket, there are two 11-seeds, a 12-seed, and a 15-seed. But, on the women's side, the lowest seeds left are three 6's. And in our quarter of the bracket, the seeding held up exactly: 1-2-3-4. BYU had nothing to lose, their zone bothered us, and the refs were very one-sided...and not to our favor. It was like playing a road game with all their hacking and flopping and the ticky-tack calls on us, and I think that got into our players' heads. Not sure how much BYU shipping in their fans contributed to that, but it doesn't matter now. A&M will most definitely not be easy, but hopefully, we got our bad game out of our system. On the men's side, I seem to recall a really bad early tournament game against South Alabama back in the day, and it looked like our season was over. But, we survived and wound up winning the whole damn thing. Probably can't expect the gals to beat three 1-seeds, which might be what it would take. But, maybe this will be a similar dynamic that'll help right the ship against Texas A&M. And, at this time of the year, you also need a little luck.

I sure hope we take out A&M. They stole the last game and almost lost the first game except for a very questionable call. They are due to have a good game but I hope it’s not Saturday
